Great Janitor: Lesson: Business and politics don't mix. Business and religion don't mix. No matter what side you pick, people will hate you, just say nothing. I have been in sales for years. One of my employees said something like this. I pointed out that people who boycott Chick-Fil-A are doing so because they don't want some portion of their money going to support groups they oppose. If the company wasn't donating heavily to anti-gay marriage groups or whatever, it would be less of an issue.

"Buy one of our delicious chicken sandwiches for $3.00 and we'll donate a nickel to Westboro Baptist Church (or someone like them)!" is why people are boycotting.

Silverstaff: Jodeo: natazha: "the biblical definition of the family unit,"

So, where are my concubines?

The bible is chock full of sinners. Don't confuse their breaking of God's plan with permission to go and do likewise. It was Adam and Eve, not Abraham and Sarah and Hagar and his Concubines.

God hates divorce, too. Just sayin'.

Solomon Had 700 wives, 300 concubines, and was Holy and beloved of Yahweh enough to build the First Temple.

The only problem was that many of his wives were followers of their own deities of their peoples, not Yahweh, and they convinced their husband to build temples to their Gods, making the God of the Israelites angry since he was having to coexist with other deities and not pretend to be the only God.

So, basically, polygamy is allowed, but only if you are marrying wives of the same faith.

I'll see your King Solomon and raise you King David. In II Samuel Chapter 12, the Prophet Nathan comes to rebuke David after the Bathsheeba / Uriah the Hittite incident. In verse 8, Nathan is speaking the direct words of the LORD [YHWH] God of Abraham, Isaaac, and Jacob, to David:

"And I [the LORD God] gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things."

God point-blank says that He personally gave David the multiple wives of former King Saul!

David's sin was taking the wife of another man whom God had not given him, and ordering the murder-by-abandonment-in-battle of her rightful husband to accomplish it.

(Note: Bathsheeba was Solomon's mother. Had David not committed this sin, neither Solomon nor any other of the post-David Kings of United Israel or Judah would ever have existed, and neither would [at least according to Matthew] the line leading to Joseph the Carpenter, [allegedly step-]father of Jesus of Nazareth! But I digress....)

This is a real shame. On a purely bidness level, CFA is the very benchmark for how to run a fast food joint. The stores are clean, the food is good, the employees are polite and service is good. No one ever says 'You're Welcome' or 'No prob'. Always, 'It's My Pleasure'. For some reason I love that small flourish.
And you're right. The guy is entitled to his opinion. But what these right wingers never seem to learn is that when you go public with your opinion, there are consequences.
And boycotts are the domain of right wingers. Just ask the Dixie Chicks if right wingers like to boycott.
As for me, My money will not be used to fund hate organizations like Focus on The Family or any group that attacks abortion doctors.
Not if I know about it first, at least. This dickwad has a right to his opinion. And so do I.

And I will miss those tasty, tasty CFA sammiches. I can't wait for Cathy to backpedal and walk his stupid statement back so I can stop eating grease bombs for lunch. Although at this point it will take more than just walking his statement back. It will probably take something along the lines of a public BJ or something.

I understand that some people don't want to give Chick-Fil-A their money. I understand that some people do. I understand that some people like chicken and find boycotts ineffective and would rather vote instead of boycott (This is my position). These are all things I understand.

What I don't understand is how Focus on the Family is being called a hate group. SPLC does not have them labeled as such, so where did the term come from? From what I recall, they're mostly magazines for adults and radio shows for children. Other than spouting their opinion and posturing, what hate group activities are they engaging in?

From what I can tell from the financial disclosures I found online... Chick-Fil-A gave a total of $1000 to an actual SPLC designated hate group (Family Research Council). That's obviously $1000 too much, but I don't get the rhetoric that Focus on the Family or the Fellowship of Christian Athletes are hate groups. (Yes, the FCA is included in the dollar amounts thrown around online as being given to "hate" groups). It just seems like there's a lot of information getting muddled, including what is or is not a hate group.

/But mostly I'm just tired of hearing about this outrageoversy

potterydove: According to hate groups like the ACLU, being pro-family is being anti-gay.

WTF?

How is telling loving couples they can't marry because it offends people of another religion being "pro-family"

Two loving men or women who want to wed, are allowed to by their faith, and are told they can't because people who follow another religion say it violates their religious traditions and concept of what a "family" is, is being "pro-family"?

That's typical Conservative doubletalk bullshiat. It's like when they want to prohibit an abortion because the procedure would be needed to save the life of the mother, so instead of aborting the fetus and saving the mother, both would die. . .because that's "pro life".

Guess what. Banning marriage equality is not a universal religious constant. The Anglican Church will do it (not all Priests and Bishops will, but you can have a gay marriage in an Anglican Church if the local diocese permits it, and there are a number that will). The Old Catholic Churches of Utrecht (a series of European Catholic churches that split with Rome in the 1800's) will marry gay couples (and ordain women priests).

Quakers, Lutheran Church of Sweden, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Church of Denmark, Church of Norway, Unitarian Universalists, Mennonite Church of the Netherlands.

Basically, most Churches other than Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Mormons, JW's and US Protestants approve of it. Or is this a "no true Scotsman" issue and all those other religions don't count?

That's without getting into non-Christian faiths that will conduct same-sex unions, like neo-Pagan faiths

Trying to ban legal recognition of same-sex marriages on religious grounds is a blatant First Amendment Establishment Clause issue, because it is giving the religious doctrine of some faiths preferential treatment in establishing the law of the land.

No. I meant on TV, when Huckabee or some other person uses the "biblical definition of marriage" as an excuse to deny equal rights, I'd really like to see just one interviewer read off Deuteronomy 22, or 2nd Samuel 12, or Exodus 21. I could go on and on. The Bible is disgusting in the treatment of women.
