Mmmm, hundred breast final.

I was fascinated by the air rifle competition. They have these elaborate guns and outfits, and visors that they put post-it notes in as blinders so they can't see to the side, as they shoot what amount to pop guns.

We need those East German she-men to dominate swimming again. I wonder if the combined Germany was tempted to keep those doctors around.

BTW, the sound guys have done all kinds tricks to bring the TV audience sounds that aren't there live. They have contact mics attached to the balance beam and other stuff int he gym. They put mics under the flight path of the arrows in archery so you can hear the zing as the arrow flies by.

I'm surprised there aren't any self-coached swimmers and that as far as I know, they all use pretty much the same sort of work outs. In track everyone did the same workouts then Michael Johnson showed up doing something totally different and now there are some sprinters doing it how he did it. His approach could at least in principle carry over to swimming if someone went for it.

cc_rider: bdub77: kevinatilusa: bdub77: JerseyTim: How long will it be before any Olympics goes by without NBC showing that clip of Bela carrying Kerri Strug? 50 years? 60?

But seriously was that not the most clutch vault ever?

Yes and no. As it turns out, she could have face-planted and it wouldn't have mattered to the US winning gold.

Oh well. Still pretty awesome.

Oh, when karoli dies, someone will want to build a bronze statue of him carrying her as a monument to women's gymnastics in the USA.
Even though it's been milked by the press for all it's worth, it was a great moment.

WhyteRaven74: rugman11: Now, with only five members, teams are usually going to have three gymnasts eligible with maybe one specialist like the American team this year.

Yep.

cameroncrazy1984: Didn't they already clinch before the vault? She just didn't know it? I remember something about that.

Yeah they did, there was actually some criticism at the time why they had her vaulting at all.

Speaking of vault, can someone explain to me why exactly Wieber (or Raisman or Douglas) didn't qualify for the Vault final? Maroney is the leader, but her teammates don't even appear in the Vault Apparatus Final participant list, but clearly their actual Qualifying scores (all Amanars) lapped the field.

Is there something I'm not understanding about how the Apparatus Final fields are selected? They occur after the Team and IAA competitions, so it's not like her coach is saving her...

While most Americans were at work. Why not show replays of other sports there now? If people are saying "give them a break, there is too much to show, that's why they are cutting stuff out", then why isn't NBC showing games on the other channels so they DON'T have to cut stuff out? The Summer Olympics are a huge event that happens once every 4 years. I think MSNBC (or whatever it is now), Bravo, and especially their freaking 24 hour sports channel can stop airing their regular stuff for 2 weeks every 4 years so we can watch some complete games.

In order to qualify for the Vault final, you have to vault twice, and you're scored on the average. I'm not sure why no one except McKayla tried to qualify for it.

There's that, but can't imagine it would be an insurmountable obstacle for someone who was motivated. Also they don't necessarily do most of their training in 50 meter pools. College swimmers spend a lot of time in 25 meter pools, what's referred to as a short course.

You can argue whether it fits now, but the history of the Olympics especially of the ancient variety is military preparation and horsemanship until very recently was a very valuable military skill.

I'm sure even that would be hard to get too. Is the YMCA going to let you swim alone for hours every day? Is your local school going to let you swim alone for hours every day? Is you country club going to let you swim alone for hours every day? Do you have the money to put a REAL pool in your backyard?
