WhyteRaven74: Earguy: Some kind of rule was needed, but perhaps with the modern scoring it should be revisited.

Given there's no Soviet bloc any more, rule should be gone for that reason alone.

You vote for us or Gazprom turns the valve off!

There was vote buying in figure skating just a few years ago. You don't need the Warsaw pact for that.

Their upper body strength is insane. I wish I could balance like that.

WhyteRaven74: Also another thing, teams used to be seven gymnasts, now they're five. That also changes things.

I think that's had a bigger effect than people realize. It used to be, with seven members, that you'd have a beam specialist, a vault specialist, and a bars specialist, so you would usually only have one or two people eligible for the all around. Now, with only five members, teams are usually going to have three gymnasts eligible with maybe one specialist like the American team this year.

bdub77: JerseyTim: How long will it be before any Olympics goes by without NBC showing that clip of Bela carrying Kerri Strug? 50 years? 60?

But seriously was that not the most clutch vault ever?

Didn't they already clinch before the vault? She just didn't know it? I remember something about that.

They need to do Ninja Warrior. I think I recall one of the US Olympic gymnasts did try it and got pretty far but not to the difficult 3rd rd.

Yes and no. As it turns out, she could have face-planted and it wouldn't have mattered to the US winning gold.

TeamEd: Atypical Person Reading Fark: London is colder than Vancouver, though, as it is not warmed by water coming up from the South Pacific. Instead, it is awash in cold water.

I like cold myself. Beaches are often cold and foggy, like today in SoCal. 62 degrees though. I wore a sweater.

Is this really all there is discuss about these not-live Olympics? It's really boring already knowing what happened.

London is warmed by ocean currents though. The Gulf Stream is the only reason GB isn't an ice box in winter. Vancouver and London are both high latitude locales next to warm ocean currents, so their winters are very simmilar.

The difference is GB has the cold North Sea to pull all the moisture out of the warm gulf stream water, which moderates the summer temps. There are no cool currents off Vancouver so you get nice 25-degree-and-sunny summer months.

It's still funny that the last winter olympics struggled for snow while the current summer ones have beach volleyball in sweaters.

The fark you talking about? I dare you to go for a swim in the North Pacific and then tell me it isn't cool.

OK, I'm watching with my "NO SPOILERS" roommate even though I already know how it ends. I won't spoil, but did our commentator just use the word "ginormous"? Why is he still talking? Why hasn't he gotten kicked in the balls?

"He's staring down that bar...grab and squeeze..."

LOL, announcer.

TeamEd: Weren't you saying that the Chinese aren't (or are incapable of) developing team sports?

I wasn't saying they couldn't, not at all. Just that it takes time for development programs to work.

TeamEd: Africa has had all the time in the world to develop top soccer teams and it never has.

They've got a few teams that are getting there, a couple of which might already be there. For Africa the big problem has been a lack of domestic tranquility. But there are more and more African born and raised players making it to the top European soccer leagues. Won't be long until a player being African will be as surprising as him being South American.

cameroncrazy1984: Didn't they already clinch before the vault? She just didn't know it? I remember something about that.

Yeah they did, there was actually some criticism at the time why they had her vaulting at all.

US team unite, form of implode

consider this: Vanquish: I love how they are talking about all these mistakes that the other countries have made, yet they won't even show the other countries individual scores, let alone the mistakes.

They're trying to pack a full days worth of events into 160 minutes and are also tailoring it for an American audience, WTF do you expect?

People going out of their way to rip on NBC's coverage must be ignorant to the fact that they're showing live coverage on 5 stations during the day and also live streaming every event online.

No they aren't. What have they shown so far? Some dives, one set of a volleyball match, a few pool races, and now gymnastics. Oh yeah, and a bunch of commercials and puff pieces. Plus they spoiled some events with their own commercials. I understand that there a lot of sports going on in the afternoon, and they cover some of it live. Which is nice, if you get to stay at home during the game.

If you look online at their TV schedule right now, it shows that NBC has Olympic programming on right now. Other NBC channels? "non Olympic programming". WHY?!? Let us pick the sport we want to watch when we get home from work. Look what CBS does during March Madness. We can pick any game that we want to watch. CBS uses all of their channels. Why won't NBC?

And what does tailoring it to American audiences mean? That is just an excuse.

So stop defending NBC's coverage. It sucks.

The two things I will give them are the soccer and the basketball channel. No commercials, and in a swing state that is amazing and no Americanizing of the commentary.
