Coelacanth: I predict that indoor gardening is going to get really big. We're going to start replacing lawns with Victory gardens. And pigeon is going back on the menu.

Wait... back on?

Ah ha ha ha! Silly subby! We'll be eating 3D printed filet mignon on Mars with raw materials space elevatored in daily from the asteroid belt. DUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Great, now we'll have to give laboratory "food farms" billion$ in subsidies too.

We don't need more food. We just need fewer people.

2012-07-31 12:21:52 AM
We'll be eating meat grown in vats before we are eating insects.

Yes. But we don't like to know that.

Insects are good. Ever had deep fried silkworms? It's like eating really crunchy potato chips.

Flakeloaf: Anyone who seriously believes a population growing the way ours is can survive on meat instead of on the food that we feed to the meat is high.

Which is why we should be feeding our meat food we can't eat ourselves. LIke hay and alfalfa and duckweed and crap (not literal crap, just stuff we don't otherwise eat).

Bugs. I've eaten them, and if you get your mind right, they're not bad. But it's an artform for me. I've really got to be in the mood. And it helps if you're hungry or if you've got to eat them or fail out.

Last I checked the good ole US of A wasn't experiencing a huge population increase (unless you count uncontrolled immigration but even then not too bad). Same with most of Europe.

Seems like Africa and Asia are where the real rampant, mindless, excessive progeny boom is going on. Could be wrong. Anyways they're dirty and poor and not contributing an excess of food to the world. fark them, let them starve, and voila population problem corrected. Nature sucks but even humans have to live in reality, can't expand infinitely on finite resources so stop spewing out 3+ crotchfruit per couple.

That's a great idea. You could mix the algae into a soy-based cracker and give it a snappy name...something like "soylin green", or "soylo lime"...something like that.

Do you get that the reason they have so many children is because mortality is so high, right?

So, your post basically is just saying "fark the poor."

Their mortality used to be much higher. If there is a "progeny boom" it's thanks to the marvels of Western medicine which allow more babies to live past their 1st birthday. Back in the Olden Days, when we still had smallpox, rampant measles, mumps and scarlet fever, and no treatment for yellow fever and malaria, they had to have 12+ kids to ensure one or two would make it to adulthood.

So we need to take responsibility for that one. If we hadn't messed around with natural selection, populations globally would be much much smaller. Course, that means lots of dead babies, but it seems like the conservatoid mindset is okay with that.

silverjets: We'll be eating meat grown in vats before we are eating insects.

You poor deluded little Farker you...

Meet the Cochineal bug This little insect is in red food coloring and has been in foods and dyes for hundreds of years.

Also the Lac beetles... the err... well the by-product we'll call it by-product of the Lac beetle makes a fine wood finish called Shellac but I wonder what other uses it might have? Hmmm You know that hard candy coating you get around oh say... skittles? Yep Shellac. Also did you know that when an apple is picked and cleaned according to FDA standards to be sold in stores it loses its shine during the cleaning process? So how do they get so shiny when you buy them? Shellac. Beetle by-product. Confectioners Glaze they call it. I wouldn't try using Shellac the wood finish on your doughnuts though. Confectioners Glaze and shellac wood finish start with the same product, Lac beetle excretion, but they are mixed with different things. One tastes yummy in cakes and candies and the other will murder you to death
