Just in case you -aren't- trolling, I'll repeat what I have several times in the Greek chick thread:

You are there to represent your country, that is, you are the face of your country to the rest of the world. If you do something that paints your country in a bad light, they have every right to kick you from the team.

I say ramp it up. Make everyone afraid to say this garbage in public. A generation from now they'll be afraid to say it at home. A generation after that the racist crap will never even enter the mind of their grandkids.

Sounds like a perfectly rational response to me, but then emotions are not allowed in polite society any longer........

The man was pissed, let it go then when he calms down make him apologize in person and be their servant for the week, or something like that.

What about this or what the Greek chick said is racist? I must have missed the part of both "controversies" where they claimed racial superiority or implied the other people were from an inferior race. Were they being douchebags? Yes. Racists? No.

People these days are so quick to throw out the terms racist, homophobic, bigot, and hateful that these terms are losing any semblance to what they actually mean. Any time someone says something negative about someone of a different race or has a view you disagree with it doesn't automatically fall under one of those over used terms.

Both of them both said something that was out of line in the spirit of sportsmanship which is why they were sent packing, people I know are regularly saying shiat that on social media that should not be said in public. I had one of our guys tweet about mexican being illegals and had to call him immediately to correct him since one of our largest buyers is mexican and hes identified with our company.

I now tell all our people, if you have to stop and ask "will this get me fired from my job if I tweet it?" the answer is dont farking type it up.

The Greek twit was at the very least xenophobic if not overtly racist, but given her particular history, it's not hard to see where her intent lie.

As for this one, my French is admittedly crappy, so I can't tell if he's calling -all- Koreans retarded or not, but I'll give him the benefit of doubt and say he's just lashing out at the Korean team specifically. Still extremely poor sportsmanship and I would say warrants being booted from the team more than what the Greek girl tweeted.

I agree that both said dumb shiat and were rightfully sent packing. My problem is that as a society we've gone overboard with "ist"s and "ism"s. It's getting to the point where it's almost impossible to have a valid disagreement with or say anything about someone of a different race, sex, or sexual orientation without being labeled a racist, sexist, or bigot regardless whether your disagreement or statement comes from a place of hatred or not. The only purpose throwing out these labels serves is to shut up people whom they disagree with and stifle open debate which isn't healthy for a free society.

Do a google news search for what ever the goofy name of the Greek triple jumper is and you'll see hundreds of headlines with the words "Racist Tweet" in them. Again I ask what about anything she said was racist and why did every news agency go along with this mischaracterization instead of simply saying she said something stupid that wasn't in the spirit of the games? Because she's white and the statement is about Africans it must be racist? If I say Africa has an AIDS and hacking off limbs problem is that racist? After all it's a criticism of black people by a white person so it must be racist, right?

So what if he's calling all Koreans retarded? Korean isn't a race. What if he said all Belgians are retarded? Other than being correct would he be racist? So it's all right not to like white countries but not Asian ones? Again stupid but not racist.

I wouldn't call it racist as much as it was utterly stupid and unsporting and embarrassing to the Swiss team. So they did the right thing.

The Greek thing was more along the lines of racism simply based off of her public support for a Greek fascist party. By itself, it was a tasteless joke. Combined with her prior tweets, it wasn't a joke anymore.

Regardless of who she supports it's still nothing more than a tasteless joke. West Nile virus and the immigrants both come from Africa and pointing that out isn't racist. Or does her support somehow make it some sort of subliminal call to arms to round up and slaughter immigrants? Let me guess, you're one of those people that thinks it's racist for a white person to correctly point out that blacks commit a disproportionate amount of crime but it's perfectly acceptable for a liberal black person to point out as much? As if facts change depending on who says them. Is pointing out that the AIDS rate in the gay community is insanely higher than it is for hetros bigoted? If you have to say that it depends on who says it then it isn't. Things are either true or they aren't.

To those saying that this is overly PC,

I say FARK him. He had a chip on his shoulder the entire match and tried to start fights at least 3 times during the game. He was an obvious skinhead racist with the mohawk and tattoos to boot. He should have been ejected from the game for bad sportsmanship. It is fitting that he is ejected from the entire Olympics.

This guy is a total asshole who definitely should have been sent home but maybe you should save all your racism outrage for when the guy actually does something you know racist. Also I'm sure there are plenty of people with mohawks and tattoos that will be shocked to find out that they're racists. Of course there's nothing wrong you disparaging an entire group of people so long as it's coming from your sanctimonious moral high ground.

No because I choose to view things based on all the evidence provided. If she had said it verbally instead of in a tweet, then you can read intent in one's tone of voice and make a judgement that way. It's much harder to judge intent with 140 characters of text. So you have look at things holistically before making a judgment. And all of the evidence provided says that she has a negative view of people that don't look Greek. She might be saying something that is based in reality, but her prior statements indicate that the intent of her statement was to demean those people instead of just make a bad joke.

Intent matters (and it's a matter of intent). There IS a difference between pointing out a statistic and acting on an assumption from it or being insulting. It's like saying to a gay guy "hey, don't get your AIDS on me" even in jest.

Like I said, it (the West Nile thing) smacks more of xenophobia than racism, but either way, she's not someone I'd invite to dinner.

The other article I read said "mongoloids" rather than "retards". I can't parse the French fine enough to make the distinction.

I think it's a little more clearly defined in the "racist" column than what the Greek chick posted.

If we are to expel all assholes from the Olympics, then there would be many fewer athletes in the games. Seems like the Swiss guy kind of needed to go, though.

Korean isn't a race. If the wall had said "Smash all the Germans..." would you reflexively think racism? What's the difference?

If a Chinese or Ethiopian athlete said all Canadians or Russians are retarded I'm sure everybody would agree that it's a stupid thing to say but there wouldn't be any knee jerk OMFG RACISM!!!! cries. Same difference but we as a society are being conditioned into a system of double standards for "protected classes" where racist/sexist/bigoted hate is automatically being assigned to the unprotected for them to try and frivolously disprove while the protected will always be given the benefit of doubt until someone actually gives enough of a shiat to try and prove otherwise.

Using the bathroom wall example, if someone walks in and sees "Smash all Koreans.." not knowing who wrote it and why it is automatically assumed that whomever wrote it must hate all Asian people. Now using the same example, if someone walks in and sees "Smash all Ukrainians..." there is no automatic assumption that whomever wrote that must hate all white people and it is assumed that whomever wrote it must have a problem with their leader or policies but race never comes to mind. Why is that? Are only white people capable of hate? Is it somehow impossible for a white person to dislike people from a particular race/sex/sexual orientation without disliking the entire group? The truth probably has more to do with the ultra far left racist belief that somehow or another white people are responsible for every bad thing that ever happened throughout history therefor they don't deserve the benefit of the doubt and should be assumed evil until somehow proven otherwise.

No. I'd assume he hates all Koreans or all Germans or all Irish or all Nigerians. You're right that's not racism, more xenophobia, which is equally bad in my book. I apologize for mixing them up. It's still lumping in an entire group for the actions of a few members of that group, or the fact that they just exist. And no, It's ridiculous to think that only white people can be racist or xenophobic. I never made such a misinformed statement.

You're a bit confused I think (and American I gather. Since American isn't a race, Americans seem to divide people into larger groups).

But yes, Korean is a race. The Korean race is an ethnic group that speak Korean, and inhabit the Korean peninsula. Almost all inhabitants in North and South Korea are of the Korean race.

You also mention Belgium, if you care I can tell you that they're mostly of either Dutch or French ethnicity. Thus is doesn't really make sense to be racist against Belgians, as they're not a homogeneous in the same way Koreans are. If you wanted to insult Belgiums in a racist way I guess you would have to go after both the Germanic and Romanic tribes that inhabit that country, and perhaps throw in their king to be sure. :P

Look, if I was that guy, I'd be ashamed and angry as hell that we'd lost to a bunch of puny men who can't fight their own battles and need 50,000 American troops to keep them safe. He has a point.

Dear God, I'm a bigot! Run! Run for the hills! A bigot has posted!

Did anyone read the Weeners in the Deadspin piece? Wow:

"OK, Michel, since it seems like you're not too busy these days, why don't you swing by my place? I've got a bunch of Koreans you can smash, and by "smash" I mean "scrub with that stiff-looking brush on top of your head there," and by "bunch of Koreans" I mean "canyon of an asscrack that I haven't cleaned or even really thought much about at all ever since I got too heavy to get out of this Rascal." Don't worry, my diet consists exclusively of coffee and Taco Bell, so I can provide some, shall we say, "natural lubrication" while you treat my ballsack like a forehead speedbag. It'll be easy; just pretend you're nodding vigorously in agreement with a speech by the WW2-era dictator of your choice. And hey, when we're done, we can go get some ice cream! I'll go ahead and assume you won't be ordering the chocolate."

Pinhead Patriot: MacEnvy: Whoa, he got kicked off the team? If this was US professional sports he would have gotten a consulting gig on FNC.

Well, he does need something to do this next season...

Exactly what crossed my mind.

Although the pc stuff continues to spiral out of control, this is different from kicking the Greek chick off the team for her harmless comments.

This guy called them "retards" and "mongoloids", which is racist. I'd be embarrassed to be on his team after these sore loser comments.

scuffleball: These witch hunts against one's ability to speak are going to be the greatest gift "tolerant" liberals ever give the world. Fascism... it's coming.

I'm sure some of you will believe the Tea Party is responsible for his words. You know, like the Tea Party is responsible for the Aurora, Colorado murder. Yeah, how'd that bit of bias work out for you, douche bags?

Look, if I was that guy, I'd be ashamed and angry as hell that we'd lost to a bunch of puny men who can't fight their own battles and need 50,000 American troops to keep them safe. He has a point.

Dear God, I'm a bigot! Run! Run for the hills! A bigot has posted!

Political correctness is fascism by another name. Some of you better wake up before they come for your words.

Look Swiss guy, THIS is what retarded really looks like!

Actually, we're much better than the rest of the world when it comes to disciplining athletes within athletic leagues.

Michael Vic and Marty McSorely come immediately to mind.

As for racism, No player in an American sports league would dare say anything that could possibly be interpreted as racist intentionally. They know the hammer will come down swiftly if they don't apologize - John Rocker was forced to apologize to Hank Aaron in person. Probably pretty humiliating.

/when it comes to them murdering their ex-wives though, not so much

MoeSzyslak: Lost_in_Korea: To those saying that this is overly PC,

White Christian Males are racist, sexist, homophobes until prove innocent, and they only get life time probation in that case. I thought everyone knew this.

MoeSzyslak: MagSeven: Scopa: I dunno, he was pissed... I don't know if he was being racist though. How many people say the exact same thing after a tough loss? Just replace "Koreans" with the name of an opposing team, school, state? Read any college football forum and you get waaaaaay worse stuff. I think this was just read as racist because the Olympics basically pits race against race, so anti-opponent comments come off as racist even if it's just "I hate everyone involved with the team I just lost too"

If I walked into a bathroom stall and read on the wall "smash all the Koreans.........." I'd think that was pretty racist. Twitter is the bathroom stall of the world. Now taken in context, he should have maybe said "Korean team" or specified which particular Koreans he would like to smash. But so far he hasn't offered clarification. Either way he's a shiatty sportsman and an embarrassment to his team and the country he represents on a very visible stage.

Everybody jumped at racism for this one because it was a White athlete calling Korean athletes retards and "mongoloids" which is racist. Nobody would jump at racism if he said "Smash all Ukranians..." because they are overwhelmingly White, his own race, which takes the racism element out of it, not that xenophobic statements condemning a whole country are any better but then the issue becomes xenophobia or extreme nationalism as opposed to racism.

And there is a double standard for white people no doubt about it, however that comes partly from stupid shiat like what this player said. Most notorious hate groups, from neo-nazis to the KKK, are white extremists so I guess the unfair notion that Whites are racist could be partly drawn from that. However, nobody exonerates groups like the New Black Panthers from being racist, for example, because they are. We can agree on the existence of an unfair double standard, but it is not nearly as bad as you paint it.

ITT a lot of people who don't understand that all intolerance whether based on race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion etc are simply different expressions of xenophobia and hence unacceptable.

"Not a race." What the fark? Race is entirely cultural. Move to a different country and I can almost guarantee your race changes. Hell, take away an American Indian's tribal card and by law his or her race changes. Go down to Brazil and there are over 200 different race classifications. In the US for decades it was a matter of immigration policy that every nationality was its own race and that every race had its own genetic predisposition toward type of government, hence the first limits on immigration to preserve the idealized "racial mix" of 1840.

I won't pretend to understand how race and ethnicity work in Switzerland, but I do know that calling out an entire ethnicity like that is generally not acceptable on the world stage these days. Xenophobia in all its forms is divisive and corrosive.

OK, here's the thing about Twitter; It's hardly ever a good idea to write down your every thought and make it available for public consumption (he wrote on an internet thread).

Second Try: This PC witch hunt is going out of control.

People think that free speech means no consequences. That is not true. If you can't keep your mouth shut and not spout off offensive shiat in a public forum, the problem is not with "political correctness," it's with you, dick. Don't whine about "PC witch hunts." Accept your consequences like an adult, and shut the hell up.
