It's pretty bad when your own "Chief foreign policy surrogate" has to publicly say "I'm sure the governor meant to say something less stunning stupid than the words that actually came out of his mouth"

"I am sure that Gov. Romney was not talking about difference in cultures, or difference in anybody superior or inferior," said McCain, a chief Romney foreign policy surrogate, today during a news conference after an event here with Sens. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC). "What I'm sure Gov. Romney was talking was that the Israeli economy has grown and prospered in a dramatic fashion. And unfortunately, the Palestinians have not had that same economic development"

Which is fine as far as it goes but then McCain goes off the rails into Republican fantasy land:
"And that goes to the leadership of the Palestinians. Everybody knows that Yasser Arafat was corrupt. And we also know that the Palestinian people have not been blessed with the kind of government that has lower regulations, less taxes, entrepreneurship, which have caused the Israeli economy to be one of the world's most successful.

No, the difference is really that the Israelis for the last twenty years have systematically undertaken to destroy Palestine economically and wipe out its middle class completely. Every time they stage "retailiatory" raids they seem to always hit civilian factories at the same time, either "accidentially" or by design.

It's almost as if they WANT Palestine to be utterly economically dependant on Israel, while ensuring the majority of its people stay in grinding poverty rather than standing on thier own two feet. But that's crazy since those conditions are a breeding ground for radicialism and the only reason Israel would do THAT is if the current government there needed a looming threat from the Palestinians to maintain thier own grip on power....but that's just crazy talk right?

Uhm, if you are looking for low taxes and no regulation - Palestine is the place for you!

Taxes are quite high in Israel and regulations are far more elaborate. Remember, Israel has compulsory military service and socialized medicine. Romney should HATE Israel for being the kind of place that Obama is coaxing America toward.

That aside, what Romney said demonstrates a remarkable ignorance about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Lets forcibly take away all of Mitt's money and land, severely restrict his ability to move around, drop him in the middle of a ghetto somewhere, and see how well he does.

I'd be curious on his thoughts as to why per capita income in Red States is so much lower than Blue States on average.

State 2010
Mississippi 31,186
...
Connecticut 56,001
DC 71,044

Based off the 2008 Presidential election results 15 of the bottom 25 are red states, and that includes both Indiana and North Carolina as blue states since they narrowly went for Obama (though neither will likely go blue in 2012).

The top 5 per capita (excluding DC) are blue.
The top 10: 8 blue 2 red.
The top 20: 17 blue 3 red.

So tell us Mitt, what's the deal? Is it the culture?

I wonder how it looks if you adjust for cost of living.

Is that what Romney did? So then why are you using a new set of criteria?

Jim_Callahan: By what logic are these states "blue" beyond your personal confirmation bias?

The 2008 Presidential Election results, as I clearly stated when I said, "Based off the 2008 Presidential election results." So I guess you could say that's my 'bias' whereas yours seems to be which party governed the state at random times over the past decade.

That said, I also stated the numbers are from 2010. If you have a beef with methodology, don't come at me with 4 different date ranges and criteria as some sort of counter argument.

First, Christie. Great, he was governor when those numbers came out. But since you get to pick and choose date ranges (see below), I'll pick the 2009 numbers where NJ had a Dem Governor and was actually second in the nation, not third. Cya Chris!

Connecticut and Maryland had Republican governors from 2004-2008? Great, what's that got to do with 2010. Personal confirmation bias? Fark me running.

I reject your entire inclusion of Romney's term in Massachusetts first because it didn't involve 2010 and second because even farking Romney refuses to talk about it.

I can't make any sense out of your New York comments, but if you're insisting New York isn't considered to be a 'Blue State', well that makes about as much sense as insisting Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts and New Jersey aren't either because of who governed them at certain times.

Is the 2008 Presidential Election a strict and beyond reproach guideline to determine a state's political leanings? No, but past presidential elections are typically the standard most use to determine where a state is on the political spectrum at any given time because there's clearly a majority--however slim or massive--of voters in that state that support a particular candidate from a given party. It's also a more constant value since if you want to start looking at governors you have to deal with all sorts of variables to get a snapshot...special elections, different term lengths, etc.

Does it generate some odd results? Sure...Indiana has as much chance to go for Obama this time around as Texas, and Obama can almost certainly kiss North Carolina as well. But generally speaking it's a quick and typically reliable go to point, particularly in a case like this where I don't feel like hashing out who was governor of each state in a thread that's nearly dead.

All of this serves to proove the wider point that was in the question I posed at the end of my post:

So tell us Mitt, what's the deal? Is it the culture?

The point being that Romney is an addled dipshiat that has no idea what he's talking about, most recently exemplified by these comparisons he's trying to make. Compare a more westernized and developed country of Israel and all its foreign aid to a bombed out non-country of Palestinians? Compare the United States with it's massive wealth in almost every criteria measurable to Mexico? Chilie and Ecuador which don't even border one another but I guess at least are on the same continent, and most of Ecuador is in the southern hemisphere too so that's gotta count for something. New York and Kansas? Texas and Oregon?

Emracool the Aeons Hip: madgonad: Uhm, if you are looking for low taxes and no regulation - Palestine is the place for you!

Taxes are quite high in Israel and regulations are far more elaborate. Remember, Israel has compulsory military service and socialized medicine. Romney should HATE Israel for being the kind of place that Obama is coaxing America toward.

Shutup with your observations! We're trying to manufacture a narrative here!

I just have a hard time imagining Israel as a low-tax nation. Not only are their income taxes higher (48% is the top rate), but they have 16% VAT, 6.95% social security, 25% capital gains, and an unavoidable 24% corporate tax.

"I am sure that Gov. Rmoney was not talking about difference in cultures"

See when saying "if you can learn anything from the economic history of the world, it's this: culture makes all the difference. Culture makes all the difference," Rmoney not talking about difference in cultures.

I really don't know how you libtards could have misinterpreted that.

FTFA: "But facts of the booming Israeli economy has to do with the kind of government that the Israeli people have freely and democratically elected which has given them a very prosperous country"

Wait, last week the GOP was saying that prosperity was entirely the work of the individual entrepreneur. And this week they're saying that the business environment established by government makes the difference?

I can't keep up.

So, the Jews are better people because they have all the money. That fits with Prosperity Gospel. Nicely done, Romney. Someone cut that lad another check.

vernonFL: Nadie_AZ: vernonFL: Romney: Why are American Indians so poor? It must be because they are lazy stupid drunks.

What, you mean the Lamanites?

Holy shiate. I never knew that much about Mormonism. Wow.

The more I read, the more all of it reads like some 10 year old's failed attempt at a Silmarillion for his half-assed DND campaign.

Scientology feels like something Arneson would have put in Blackmoor.
