friday13: Leeds: friday13: Leeds: Leeds: Can someone please explain to me why certain religious people seem to believe that the bible "defines" marriage as between one man and one woman?

Because the old testament seems completely filled with polygamist marriages, and even Jesus grew up in a home with more than 2 parents.

So am I missing important parts of the bible that say that "the biblical definition of marriage" is different than the marriages actually depicted in the the bible, or are the people claiming this stuff simply idiots who don't know their own book?

// Seriously, this seems to come up a lot nowadays and I'm left wondering where it all started...

Are there honestly no bible-thumpers left on Fark?

Because someone has to explain why all of these so-called Christians fight so hard to redefine marriage into a one-on-one sort of scenario.

I dunno, and my current Christian Thought resource is currently unavailable. My guess is that it has something to do with that asshole Paul's seven writings or the 15-20 or so writings forged in his name, but I'm not sure...

I appreciate your taking the time to respond, but I don't think that's it. According to Paul, simply having sex makes people into "one flesh" and he states that this even applies to prostitutes. The problem with whores (according to Paul) isn't that they sleep with people, it's that they don't become one of his wives after the fact.

The more I read the bible the more I'm convinced the Mormons were correct with their interpretation of scripture. This "one man, one woman" crap is a very recent invention and seems to have nothing at all to do with the bible.

Well, I DID say it was a guess. And it could also be a byproduct of the whole anti-sex theme of Christianity as a whole. In the early church (and in some today), sex, period, even for procreation, was dirty. Sex should be done as little as possible and in the confines of marriage. That may be why, as well.

Indeed, you did say that. :)

It's interesting that Catholics claim that Mary remained a virgin her whole life (I know, I chuckled at that too). And yet the bible is clear that Jesus had 4 brothers and at least 2 sisters. So according to Catholics, Jesus was a product of a polygamist family, which is hardly surprising since that was what a traditional family was as described in both the Old and New Testaments.

So where the hell did all of the idiots today come up with this crap that "traditional marriage" or "marriage as defined in the bible" is between one man and one woman? Because that's not "traditional," nor is it how the bible defines marriage.

Sometimes it's easy to write Christians off as being stupid and I don't want to do that here unfairly. I wish more of these "Christian" folks would post on fark so that we can understand where the heck they are getting their talking points.

Sabyen91: Nadie_AZ: BritneysSpeculum: netizencain: Wait, so one employee, in one store was let go because she was knocked up. And this is news?

No, the complaint identifies 4 women in the same store who were fired so that they could stay home and raise their children. The Walmart case started with a complaint about one store.

Hm. Chick-Fil-A is a franchised chain. Do you blame the zealot owner or the chain?

Read the Forbes article I just posted. The owner has a lot of power over the franchisees and he uses it.

That's not the only company mandate. Chick-fil-A's corporate mission, as stated on a plaque at company headquarters (and by Cathy), is to "glorify God." It is the only national fast-food chain that closes on Sunday so operators can go to church and spend time with their families; franchisees who don't go along with the rule risk having their contracts terminated

Sieg....Christ?

rewind2846: Yeah... FSM forbid they get any of that spanish on your fries...

If I have trouble ordering, I'm not likely to go back. It has nothing to do with race, and everything to do with employees speaking English well enough so that I don't have to resort to pointing and making hand gestures in the hopes that I'll get what I want in anything resembling a reasonable time frame. It's happened a few times in the past couple years, and I just don't go back to those places any more because it's not worth the bother.

Seriously, I just want to go in, order, pay, and get the hell out with what I asked for as quickly as possible. Beyond that I don't care even a little if the manager is a douche or the CEO is a fundie or whatever. I don't care about their politics, their staffing, their hiring practices, none of that. Because those are the only rights that matter, according to libertarians.

Tell me, what (if anything) should the government do in case where a man is beating his wife

...where parents are beating their children?

Obviously, the government should protect against any initiation of force against persons or property. However, parents should be privileged to initiate reasonable force against their children for the purpose of causing them to comply with their directives.

...where employees are being exposed to toxic substances, the employer knows this, and decides not to tell them?

The government should do nothing, unless the employee has specifically contracted for the employer to disclose the existence of toxic substances in his workplace. Otherwise, the employee should know that life is about choices and personal responsibility. He should make the choice to understand the substances he works with, not expect the government to point a gun at his employer and demand it babysit him.

What if the employee doesn't know that the substance is toxic, and/or is told by his employer that it's completely safe? Shouldn't the employee ask the people who are regulating his business (i.e. the government) to intervene?

Actually, everyone has the right to work in a safe, non-toxic environment, and if that work environment does not meet those standards, it is the employer who has the responsibility of informing the worker of what kind of conditions exist.

And yes, government is there to enforce that policy because the honor system isn't. But you knew that.

I like you. Hell, you can come over to my house and fark my sister. But this is a stupid post.

For starters, you presume that writing our representatives has any impact at all. They already know which way the wind blows, and legislate accordingly. More importantly, you suggest that if someone hasn't done everything possible, they should do nothing at all.

Look, I haven't personally lobbied everyone I can Google who may or may not be able to advance the cause of gays having the same rights as I do. But I can damn sure not fork over my money to a company who, in turn, funnels that money to groups opposed to my friends, neighbors, and co-workers signing a contract and enjoy basic dignities afforded to the rest of us.

Or they're idiots. Either way, I just want my food, and I care not even a tiny amount what their CEO is rambling about, or what one manager does with the staff. But to give them money they need to know what I want to buy. That's a pretty simple concept...

I've lived in the southwest since 1968, and in CA for 11 years. Eaten lots of food in lots of places. As long as it's tasty and I can get it without hassle, I'm happy. Dick, douchebag, asshole, whatever -- I don't care. If I know I can walk in and say "Hello, I'd like that and this, please" and plop down money for tasty food without issue, I'll go back. If that's being a dick then fine, I'm a dick. Not really a newsflash. If it's a hassle, then I usually don't bother going back.

But really, honestly: all I care about when buying food is the ability to actually buy food. Seriously. Not politics, not religion, not whether the manager is firing people, not what race the guy is, none of that. They have good food, and it's no trouble to get it, I'll buy it. They could make soft drinks with the tears of orphans and I really couldn't possibly care less.

Indeed. And Catholics seem to understand less about their religion than the less dogmatic Christian denominations. But the point stands- Marriage, as defined in the bible, is between a man and a handful of women. And Jesus himself was anti-family in as much as he said that people had to leave their families in order to better suit his needs as a follower.

So I'm troubled that the term "traditional marriage" since the asshats who use that term almost never really mean a traditional (polygamist) marriage.

Of course, one of the things that kills me re the "Christian Traditional Marriage" bleaters is that not a one of them (with the possible exception of those actually living a monastic lifestyle like nuns and monks) seem to have actually read those parts of the New Testament referring to marriage.

Even the Paultards (and here, I'm not referring to Ron Paul Fanboys, but self-proclaimed Christians who seem to follow the word of Paul a lot more than the supposed founder of their religion) don't have a leg to stand on, because it would appear the early church encouraged people not to marry or procreate at all and merely allowed marriage as a method of preventing people from committing the sin of lust (particularly evident in 1 Corinthians 7, where marriage is pretty much really only explicitly condoned as to keep people from technically fornicating and there are impunctions for the unmarried to NOT marry--and apparently the question of marriage being considered Christian at all was so contentious that Paul was called in to give a ruling on it.

(Also, there's an interesting commandment NOT to divorce heathen mates unless the heathen leaves the marriage--in the hopes of converting said heathen, and if unable to, at least making sure the kids aren't in ritual impurity. Yeah, there's some...odd holdovers from halachic law in there.)

And oddly, 1 Corinthians 7 is the closest thing at all to a "one man/one woman" marriage defined in the Bible at ALL--and in context it's much less that and more "You really shouldn't be screwing or THINKING of screwing at all, but I KNOW you're going to screw like rabbits, so at least take a husband or a wife if you're going to be screwing so at least you aren't living in sin when screwing like rabbits".

It should also be noted that the "Damnit, if you're going to screw, get married first" was inspired by events noted in 1 Corinthians 5-6, which noted that (shall we say) there were some rather severe issues with Sexual Impropriety, including at least one incident of frank incest (a member having sex with his father's wife), and in particular there seemed to be a real problem with church members soliciting prostitutes. (Someone who described the impunction as (to put it bluntly) "If you're going to fark a whore, marry her first" actually had it just about right.)

(1 Corinthians, of note, is pretty much chock full of "How halachic law has been a bit liberalised in dealing with the reality of living in a Greek society where Hellenist religion of the old gods is the dominant faith and you also still have folks following the old Egyptian and Babylonian pantheons". The chapter right after "If you're going to screw, at least get married first, but we'd REALLY prefer it if you didn't screw at all" is (not making this up) "Why to politely refuse food if it's been part of a ritual sacrifice to a pagan deity"; 1 Corinthians 11 in particular also contains a lot of the really misogynist stuff (including the commandment that women could never head a church) that the Quiverfull movement uses to justify their "breedin' for Jesus and patriarchy" stuff...and, oddly, which may have well been the very justification quoted for why women were let go from this Chick-Fil-A franchise.)

/been boycotting Chick-Fil-A for over a decade, also write to congresscritters, also active in general in the antidominionist movement
//sad thing is, as an apatheist I think I've actually read the Bible more than the average dominionist

Thank you for that.

It's telling that the people (like you) who know the bible, stand up and speak directly about and from the bible are almost never Christians themselves. What a sad state of affairs.

whidbey: I really would love it if CFA really couldn't handle the pressure of this and eventually went bust. Just for once.

Even better, you could wish for a change in leadership in the company that would modify their policies to be more inclusive, as opposed to seeing thousands of people lose their jobs and the livelihoods of thousands more threatened. It's not just the local CFA store that will shut down and a few people are out of work. It's the hundreds of franchises, thousands of employees, all their suppliers, and vendors who would be affected, plus the loss of a significant tax base.

You're right. No other fast food place would buy the empty booths they would leave behind at all those mall food courts. They would sit empty for an eternity.
