you guys are aware that the israeli-arab dispute does not end at the banks of the jordan river or mount hermon, right? yes, the palestinians have a rough lot and a raw deal and as human beings we are obligated to help them help themselves insofar as does as little harm to others (can we carve a chunk out of israel and give it to them? out of jordan? i don't have the answer...) and mr rmoney has expressed this thought as inarticulately as possible. nonetheless, there must be some reason (or perhaps it's just chance) that the dozens of surrounding arab nations more or less are all dominated (in population) by impoverished middle and lower classes, while the israeli standard of living has been steadily improving. we have donated no small amount of money and american security to several of our arab allies in the region and have seen far less returns.
the notion that the israelis have made good use of human capital is a popular idea in israel, and a careful inspection of the facts will bear out its truth. the billions we "give" them a year in defense spending is spent---every penny of it---in the united states. contrasted with the expenditures we've made in securing (or attempting to secure) other parts of the middle east, southeast asia, and so on.... it would be several hundreds of years until the "aid to israel" really constituted a significant portion of our "defense" expenditures. keep in mind that the "aid" does not come without restrictions. the israeli defense industry cannot sell certain weapons to certain countries as a byproduct of this agreement. in some sense some of the aid is thus compensation for lost sales.
of course we should carefully evaluate our relations with israel, all of the pros and all of the cons, and we should do it will an objective view of all the facts. i personally believe that the alliance currently is mutually beneficial, but am open to being proven wrong. the views presented in fark in favor of or against the alliance are frequently taken completely out of perspective, even when the authors present verifiable facts. thus i would urge all to understand the complex nature of our relations with israel and with any other nation before jumping to any conclusions.

Dr Dreidel: NINDroog: Doesn't Israel have one of the highest rates of income inequality for a developed country? That sounds like Romney's paradise.

Also, didn't they just have a whole bunch of riots over said inequality?

Citation needed. Taxes are very high there, and social services are pretty robust, so I'm guessing it's hard out there for a non-socialist.

They have riots over inequality, but that's more about the ultra-religious being set on being the absolute biggest douchecanoes they can. It's inequality of the Rosa Parks sort (access and equal protection), not of the Medieval Feudalist sort (income inequality).

You're asking for a citation? Were you asleep last summer for the camping out in Tel Aviv because of income inequality?

indylaw: The fact that the Jews took most of the good land and walled off the Arabs in their own bantustans subject to an embargo with no freedom of movement has nothing to do with it. No sir.

Good land? There was good land before Israel built the infrastructure after 1948? That's funny

Mitt: Polaks are culturally inferior to Krauts too., Because the Polak GNP per capita is less than half that of the Krauts.

(Mitt handler: Mitt, you can't use that line. Hitler already holds the copyright.)

Mitt: OK, Let me retro that remark too , and etch a new sketch, because I really did not mean to say that.
In fact, let's retro-etch the whole goddam trip and get back to ni--er baiting back home.

Some people can't handle the truth.

Yes, every Palestinian has attacked Israel. None of them are innocent

There are welfare queens. It just so happens that they're the rich, not the poor.

Philip Francis Queeg: skullkrusher: Philip Francis Queeg: skullkrusher: Philip Francis Queeg: skullkrusher: verbaltoxin: skullkrusher: verbaltoxin: People make a culture. It doesn't exist on its own in a vaccuum. Cultures are also complex and often contradictory. Just like the people who make it and live it. To say one is inferior is to then say those people are inferior.

It doesn't say that at all. Of course, people would view their cultures as superior to different ones. After all, it is their culture that helps define societal norms. While we might be shocked a culture would force women to cover from head to toe, they are likely shocked that we are so permissive.

So you're saying that if someone from Canada, Japan or somewhere else insulted your culture and said it was inferior, you wouldn't be offended? You'd be fine with that?

Who gives a fark if someone is insulted? If I someone told you you're ugly, you'd probably be insulted. Would your offense impact the veracity of the statement?

In international diplomacy, insulting people as Romney did is frowned upon.

Mittens has no idea wtf he's doing. This isn't about him. This conversation is about whether culture A can be inferior to culture B. Of course it can.

Please rank the following cultures in order of superiority:

United States
France
Canada
Bolivia
Australia
Israel
Palestine
Jordan
Japan
Russia

doesn't work that way. I'd say US culture is superior to Palestinian culture but trailing Canadian and Australian culture though in large part they are quite similar. I am not aware of a mathematical system that ranks cultures.

You had a whole list of things that defined your notions of cultural superiority previously. I would have thought that someone who is as devoted to the notion of cultural superiority as you are would have thought through these kinds of comparisons in the past.

Do you agree with Romney that US culture is superior to Mexican culture?

Why are you making this hard? Your culture score is a function of wonders you've built, and the overall cultural output of each of your cities, along with any bonuses from great persons.

Seriously. It's not difficult.

2012-07-30 08:33:13 PM

404 page not found: Philip Francis Queeg: skullkrusher: Philip Francis Queeg: But let's take you art your world, and believe that you are comparing cultures in some meaningful way. Since you think the US culture is superior to Mexican culture, do you believe that you should be spreading American culture and displacing Mexican culture? Should Mexican culture be limited or eliminated in the US?

I don't think the negative aspects of Mexican culture are ingrained in US culture in any meaningful way so no. We practice (or at least support) cultural imperialism all the time. Who doesn't want to see every resident of every country treated as an equal human being worthy of respect and dignity? We aren't perfect in this regard but we are far better than many places in the world - who wouldn't want to see these western cultural values as such they are exported to a place like Rwanda?

And of course you'd fully support Canadian and Australian cultural imperialism missions in the US to fix our inferior culture once we stamp out the inferior Mexican culture.

Which culture so you think should ultimately be supreme?

MINE. Obviously.

Disagree, it's the dick waving of Iran that is scaring Saudi Arabia, who begs Israel and America to keep them in check. Also it happens to be during a time when military budgets all over the world are under threat of being lowered

some cultures are superior to others. Not sure how that translates to relative economic success but a culture which stones women to death for having an affair is inferior to one which does not. A culture which exalts superstition over science is inferior to one governed by reason and logic.
A culture which destroys the artifacts of the past is inferior to one which preserves them. A culture which revels in narrowmindedness and provincialism is inferior to one which regards the world openly and inquisitively. A culture which promotes war over peace? Inferior. Get the idea?

Actually, Romney made a very flippant bigoted statement that makes more than a few assumptions about both the Israelis and the Palestinians. This has been more than covered here.

Which is why "Israelis are real douchebags" is such a common stereotype.

Mrtraveler01: "spmkk: Mrtraveler01: spmkk: Yes, because as the Syrians, Jordanians, Egyptians and Lebanese have all shown us, Arab populations in the Middle East who aren't occupied by Israel do great for themselves, so the only logical conclusion is that the occupation is the main factor in the disparity in GDP.

How do you explain the UAE and Qatar?

Durrrr....

Are you trying to be funny? UAE and Qatar are sitting on goldmines -- they have the 5th- and 7th-largest richest oil reserves in the world, respectively, as well as small populations and comparatively tiny areas. It's hard to have a low GDP under circumstances like that no matter what your culture.

So you agree that it's not a cultural thing then?

Good to know."

I'm trying to figure out whether your problem is with reading comprehension or critical reasoning, or if you're actually trying to back me into a corner with a totally senseless strawman...

In certain exceptionally fortunate circumstances, culture is a less determinant influence on prosperity because the prosperity is already taken care of and doesn't need to be achieved. Both UAE and Qatar are textbook examples of such exceptions.

The places I brought up that are culturally and territorially similar to the Palestinian territories -- Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon -- are not. And the reason they are less prosperous than their culturally different neighbor has nothing to do with any kind of occupation....which should inform you that Palestinians' insistence on blaming their economic failures on someone else rather than on their cultural choice of what to do with the resources they have is a cop-out, and the world's acceptance of that self-victimization is naive.
