Dr Dreidel: Citation needed. Taxes are very high there, and social services are pretty robust, so I'm guessing it's hard out there for a non-socialist.

I didn't have a citation, which is why I put a question mark at the end of that sentence rather than a period.

However, a cursory investigation of income inequality in Israel leads me to believe that I was not entirely off the mark.

Perhaps you are correct that the riots were not about income inequality, though I do know a substantial portion were based on rent/housing prices (or at least last years were).

Palestinians have a culture of their land being taken away by Israelis. What kind of a loser culture is that? Jesus, Palestinians, get a better culture, you feebs.

Speaking of winning cultures...by the way, Israel, that 2 billion dollars a year we give you, so you can afford more tanks and planes and bulldozers and shiat? We're upping that amount some. Give our apologies to your accountants on the headaches that this will cause them.

Epoch_Zero: You can't be serious. No one is this dumb.

*checks article*

"As you come here and you see the GDP per capita, for instance, in Israel which is about $21,000 dollars, and compare that with the GDP per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian authority, which is more like $10,000 per capita, you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality," Romney said.

(Figures on the United Nations' website actually indicate a much greater disparity between Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory. Israel had a per capita GDP of $27,060 in 2009, while the 2009 per capita GDP of the occupied Palestinian territory was listed as $1,367.)

Citing the book "The Wealth and Poverty of Nations," Romney detailed his interpretation of author David Landes' thesis.

"He says if you can learn anything from the economic history of the world, it's this: culture makes all the difference. Culture makes all the difference. And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things," Romney said.

......

[i3.kym-cdn.com image 394x319]

Aid to the Palestinians is about $1600 per person per year*. That's higher than the average middle income for Egypt at about $1400 per year. So yes, it is culture that is driving success.

* The amount has dropped to about $1300 recently.

shower_in_my_socks: Israel: Universal healthcare, and gays have been serving openly in their military for nearly 20 years.

And American conservatives LOVE the place.

Well it's not that they love the state of Israel. They love their idiotic interpretation of biblical prophecy that states the 2nd coming of Christ and the Rapture will happen when Israel is reformed. I think right now they're actively trying to get Jerusalem to be an official part of Israel because they believe that's what's holding things up.

So it's important for them to keep Israel dominant in that region at all costs, even if they don't like their form of government or their beliefs.

It's all really retarded, but so is conservatism in the first place.

It's pretty bad when John McCain, your top mouthpiece on foreign policy has to issue a statement with words to the effect of "No matter what it SOUNDED like, Romney clearly did not MEAN to say what he seems to have said"

and BTW the fact that Israel has systematically reduced Palestine's economic infrastructure to rubble over the last ten years is a LOT of the reason why its economy sucks

NINDroog: Doesn't Israel have one of the highest rates of income inequality for a developed country? That sounds like Romney's paradise.

Also, didn't they just have a whole bunch of riots over said inequality?

A quick glance at the the World Bank's data on its GINI index gives a little bit of information. The last year in which they've got the index listed for most of the High Income OECD member countries is 2000. Israel was listed at 39 which is the second highest level of inequality behind the U.S.

The thing about the GINI and inequality data is that economists are still working on getting good data about inequality. It's surprisingly hard to deal with inequality since there's a fair number of ways you can look at it. I don't have any Theil statistics available right now to check.

It's all really retarded, but so is conservatism in the first place.

It's more complicated than that, but not by much.
Some Biblical "prophecy" or another has been interpreted by evangelicals to mean that Christ will not return until Israel has returned to its orginal Biblically described borders (not clear if they mean Israel in the "Unified Kingdom" sense or the borders of Israel after Judah had alrready split off, but I doubt they know what the difference either.)

As such they have become rabid supporters of Ultra-nationalist expansionist factions in Israel, providing them with money and political muscle here in the US. Those groups in Israel have gratefully accepted thier help, apparently either not realizing or caring that the evangelicals believe the next step in thier "end times scenario" is that shortly after the restoration of Israel's borders will be the extermination of all Jews everywhere save for 144,000 who convert to Christianity.

But I think Mitt's somewhat bizarre phrasing has less to do with pandering to evangelicals and uch more to do with his own Mormon beliefs, which I think posit that the original folks mentioned in the Book of Mormon were tribes of Israelis who got "lost" and somehow eneded up in North America and were incredibly technologically advanced (until their culture was destroyed by the evil black-skinned bad guys)

2012-07-30 04:10:14 PM

emilyek_1: Several months back Romeny announced his list of advisers. I forget the numbers exactly, but of the fifty or so, over half were Jewish; and many were the same neocons Bush had had attatched to him.

Match that to the Mormon belief that Mormons are the "Lost Tribe of Israel" and it's clear why AIPACers think they've got themselves a real winner with Romney-- as well as the war with Iran Obama won't give them.

I'm not sure any Jewish leadership is "in bed" with Romney because he thinks he's part of a lost tribe. Look into how some of the Rabbinate in Israel treated African Jews for more on how "lost tribes" are handled (hint: not always well). IMO, it's because they know who the Jews are, and it's seen as establishing a "special status" that by rights doesn't need to be so established. (Also, there's a belief that we're never gonna know who's from what tribe until the Messiah comes. "Shortcutting" that is a no-no.)

It's because Romney has money and is willing to say whatever AIPAC wants him to that they support him. The fact that Israeli leadership (and by extension, lots of AIPAC) is sabre-rattling with Iran is why Romney is also toy-sword-wielding - but don't let that fool you into thinking American Jewry is on board with Mittens.

"Those same neocon" Jews on Bush's team that are now on Romney's team are a who's-who of basically the only high-profile Republican Jews not named Eric Cantor. There are so many more on the Democratic side (including the rest of the Jewish Congressional delegation), plus staffers and other high-level Jewish advisors.

In short, diversity of opinion exists in every group. Yes, even that one.

Why?

1. Because it's completely self serving to openly support the guy that (at one point yesterday) greenlit Israel attacking Iran

2. Because Netenyahu's entire sordid career is line crossing. He's a habitual line stepper.
