sweetmelissa31: Yeah. Republicans seem to believe that anyone who is poor is the US is suffering from a lack of culture and not from any institutional bias.

I guess that could explain Mississippi and the rest of the deep south.

Doesn't Israel have one of the highest rates of income inequality for a developed country? That sounds like Romney's paradise.

Also, didn't they just have a whole bunch of riots over said inequality?

This is what happens when a "corporate consultant" goes on a "diplomatic mission." Dude's used to walking into a place and shiatting all over everybody.

He's also pandering HARD for the Florida vote, and of course went too far.

FTA"As you come here and you see the GDP per capita, for instance, in Israel which is about $21,000 dollars, and compare that with the GDP per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian authority, which is more like $10,000 per capita"

And there is your GOP and it's expected nominee's viewpoint on what makes people worth being concerned about. Why any average working schmo would support this party, or this Clown Shoes candidate, is beyond me.

You can't be serious. No one is this dumb.

*checks article*

"As you come here and you see the GDP per capita, for instance, in Israel which is about $21,000 dollars, and compare that with the GDP per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian authority, which is more like $10,000 per capita, you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality," Romney said.

(Figures on the United Nations' website actually indicate a much greater disparity between Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory. Israel had a per capita GDP of $27,060 in 2009, while the 2009 per capita GDP of the occupied Palestinian territory was listed as $1,367.)

Citing the book "The Wealth and Poverty of Nations," Romney detailed his interpretation of author David Landes' thesis.

"He says if you can learn anything from the economic history of the world, it's this: culture makes all the difference. Culture makes all the difference. And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things," Romney said.

Citation needed. Taxes are very high there, and social services are pretty robust, so I'm guessing it's hard out there for a non-socialist.

They have riots over inequality, but that's more about the ultra-religious being set on being the absolute biggest douchecanoes they can. It's inequality of the Rosa Parks sort (access and equal protection), not of the Medieval Feudalist sort (income inequality).

Several months back Romeny announced his list of advisers. I forget the numbers exactly, but of the fifty or so, over half were Jewish; and many were the same neocons Bush had had attatched to him.

Match that to the Mormon belief that Mormons are the "Lost Tribe of Israel" and it's clear why AIPACers think they've got themselves a real winner with Romney-- as well as the war with Iran Obama won't give them.

That's what I mean... To glibly chalk up the disparity to "culture" is not only insulting, it shows a remarkable ignorance of the dynamics in play between Israel and the Palestinians and the level of control the Israelis have over the movement of Palestinians and what they can do.

kingoomieiii: Yeah, that's probably why. In any case it's certainly easy to tell with both of them on such equal ground. If one of them were under crippling sanctions or a blockade of some sort, though, that comparison would be unfair. But no stooge could be so stupid as to say something like this out loud if that were the case.

But seriously, when it comes to talking about the world outside the US, Romney is somehow actually worse than Bush.

Romney seems to have a lot of idiots guiding his campaign and policy and doesn't seem to know when not to say something... Bush didn't have idiots, ruthless but not idiots...

The story, he claims, "never should have been written, was not handled responsibly and the Romney campaign was never called for comment. The economic situations for prosperity are interesting to study and important. "

He added that the comments were "not in any way an attempt to slight the Palestinians, and everyone knows that." And he even goes so far as to say: "It is regrettable whenever a story is handled improperly and I think we all agree on that."

Well heck, this could be fun.

Let's see which cultures are superior/inferior to one another by GDP rankings.

Japan and Germany are better than the UK, but it seems odd that their cultures produce a lot of scat porn. Maybe we can add that to the metrics.

You are right. I found this:

As criticism mounted while Romney traveled to Poland, campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said: "His comments were grossly mischaracterized."

Also

The campaign contends Romney's comparison of countries that are close to each other and have wide income disparities - the U.S. and Mexico, Chile and Ecuador - shows his comments were broader than just the comparison between Israel and Palestine.

LOLWUT? In my world there is a whole country called Peru with like 800 miles long and roughly the size of Alaska in between.

FlashHarry: i used to think mitt was smart and that i just disliked him for his unctuous pandering.

now i'm realizing that he's an upper-midwest dubya - a harvard-educated, multimillionaire moron who was born on third base and thought he hit a triple.

The more I learn about Mittens and see how he acts, I don't think the expression "born on third base/hit a triple" applies to him. It seems like the expression should be altered to: "Born on third base, thinks he hit a home run."

Most people who were born on third base realize there is still work to be done to make it to home base. Mitt thinks he is already there and that all this campaigning is just a formality, hence he is just phoning it in/acting like a fool. He doesn't think it matters because he is supposed to be president, regardless of anything else.

"He says if you can learn anything from the economic history of the world, it's this: culture makes all the difference."

Yes, and it seems Israel has a 'culture' of bulldozing Palestinian homes. That must be what makes them so wealthy.

2012-07-30 03:33:06 PM
When all else is equal, culture makes a difference.

When you have an oppressed group with frequent trade and economic restrictions vs a group that has plenty of trade and tourism you can't compare their cultural basis of economics.

/I sometimes wonder how Africa would have done if the Europeans hadn't half colonized parts.

Romney could have pissed on the Western Wall while giving a Nazi salute and 45-percent of America will vote for him simply because of the R in front of his name. A political party. They bow down to a goddamn political party. Bunch of pathetic, servile, fuk-wits. They are the future ancestors of Morlocks.

One given with the Romney campaign is the more adjectives and outrage issued with any statement the more offensive or stupid Romney's original comment was.
