I once once read about a woman whose boyfriend took ambien and her would call her at night, but would have no recollection of the calls. The problem was she like him better on ambien, but really needed to get some sleep.
There have been reported cases of people doing weird and even deadly things while asleep.There was one case where a man apparently dreamed he was out hunting and the deer started to fight him back, and he woke to find himself choking his wife. The wife confirmed he'd been sound asleep when the attack occurred. And people who use Ambien often sleepwalk, sleep-eat, talk on the phone while asleep, etc.
However, the prerequisite to all that is that the person have been ASLEEP.
I would say it's entirely likely. A perfectly sweet and well-mannered older gentleman I know once showed up at his pastor's house at 2am, in his underwear and holding a shotgun, under the influence of Ambien. TFA suggests the guy was just plain drunk, though.
