When confronted about the thefts, Roberts told management to "discount it from his paycheck," according to the arrest report.

Must have just read Getting to YES as this is his BATNA.

stunningly stupid to think he was not on camera. and will jewelry store get smart and offer above dirt wages to attract better quality personnel? jewelry is a sweet little business. no heavy lifting and the mark-up is ridiculous.

Something similar happened to me at Best Buy. I was there to get Christmas presents for the office staff, so I was loading up a cart with iPods, cell phones, video games, etc. As I was getting ready to leave, I got a phone call from my daughter's school nurse asking if I could come to her place after work. Silly me, gabbing away, I forgot to pay and walked out with the full cart. You would've thought that I'd just broken a federal law. The security guards came running out, tackled me, and held me in a choke hold until the police arrive. I tried to explain myself to the officiers, but they refused to believe me. I offered to pay for the items, but they said that it wasn't an option. They booked me into the county jail and I was eventually released on a $10k bond. Fast forward a year and many court dates later, I got a $5000 dollar fine, thirty days suspended, and 250 hours of community service. So please don't be too quick to judge this guy because people make honest mistakes.

Wait, wait? I don't believe it. Next you'll be telling me that diamonds are cheap and plentiful.

That was you? Thanks, that took care of the entire precinct's Christmas shopping that year. Wait, I mean we booked all three of those cell phones into evidence at the precinct station. Yeah, that's what happened.

Next year I'll check with the guys and send you a list.

Sure, because it sounds like they're going to keep him on for awhile.
