If the media made it a point to racially identify everyone in a news article (particularly articles about crime), what do you think the benefit would be?

Right, and then what? That's what I really want to know. What practical things will people do with that information?

If the goal is to warn white people (and other races) to avoid black people...well, those lessons are usually taught early in life and learned in the home, so I'm not sure how much more reinforcement they need. If the goal is to exclude black people from public places...it's already been tried, and for the most part, failed.

If it's to reaffirm preexisting prejudices...okay, that I can understand. People love to be told what they believe is right. And maybe that's all this is really about...to make people feel better about what they already believe.

Granted, slavery does not exist. Until THREE YEARS AGO none of us could even imagine that this country was "ready" for a black President. If we were still batting that question around three farking years ago, how far in the past could all of this really be? My mother was spit on at Ocean City during Spring Break or her senior year and her classmates were run out of town two days into a week long vacation by bigots. She's still alive and not old enough to retire. Point being, how far in the past was it, really?

The fighting started around 11pm so the thugs weren't concerned about getting rest before going to work the next day. Conclusion, everyone involved in this dopey fight thinks obama is wonderful and that he's doing a great job.

See, to them black people are getting a pass since we can pointing to history to explain our plight. But, a broke ass white person does not have that "excuse". There is no systematic reason why they should be poor or amoral. That just makes them failures. Bigotry allows them to deflect the focus from their poor life management on to those who they claim are inferior.

Well, yes actually. The one guy who does something is a lone guy. If there had been 35 of him, I'm pretty it would being talked about in very very different terms. Though, you're probably completely right that race wouldn't still wouldn't have been brought up.

Still, it's only natural that when an incident involves a large group, one's first instinct is to look for what that group had in common. It just happens that skin color is one of the things that's most quickly apparent; exponentially more so if it's one other than your own. IMHO, the vast majority of racism is the result of people stopping thinking about it after they notice the most obvious common element.

While I agree that for many bigots, their bigotry is based on resentment and avoidance of their own failures...how do we explain middle class bigotry and wealthy bigotry? They don't necessarily need someone to look down upon to feel better about themselves.

I won't bother taking up internet bandwidth trying to understand all the nuances of bigotry and racism. I think it's a complex belief system that varies from person to person. Some are just scared. Some are frustrated and fed up. While others simply feel more comfortable by categorizing people based on culture or skin color.

What I'm interested in is what people will do with their bigotry. Because as a black person who doesn't necessarily fall into many of their stereotypes, it can and will affect me regardless. And that's why I asked my initial question.

Gangsters are organized crime-- ie, white gangs. Capone, for example, was a gangster. Gangbangers are non-Euroamerican gangs engaged in disorganized crime.

For example, everyone loves the romantic gangsters and wants to be a part of the mystique. There must be dozens of towns in Indiana that claim they were called "Little Chicago" because of the gangsters who supposedly vacationed there. But you'll never see them trading off the recreation of gangbangers because they're not "gangsters".

None; I actually feel like they're trying to go out of their way to NOT do so, just to keep the hallowed name of Dayton from being sullied or some such shiat. If anything, it seems like not mentioning the bad makes them feel like they're still good or something.

It's local news, you can tell by the part where it says "Home > News > Local." The assumption is the audience is local and has a general knowledge of the area. If you read the local news section of a San Francisco newspaper and it refereed to "the Golden Gate," would you accuse them of trying to use omission to hide the fact that it's a bridge?

If this was national or world news, you'd have a point. It's not.

It's really less about skin color and more about the way some people choose to live their lives. I've worked with and built friendships with some really great people who happen be black and hispanic. Why, because we shared the same work ethics and basic morality. We might have political differences, but that's no difference with my white friends.

However, when i see a car full of thugged out looking dudes or a truck full of trashy looking white guys, i usually think, "there goes some dirt bags."

Not because of their race, not because they might not have a lot of money, but because they embrace the stereotype. As long as dumbshiats out on the street embrace an outward appearance of hostility and ignorance they will be treated as such. And if a discussion about a sippy cup degenerating into an attempted homicide isn't THE very definition of hostile and ignorant, then i don't know what is.

So what is the answer? You break the cycle through upbringing and education right? At what point does the state just start swooping in and removing kids under a certain age from the projects/trailer park/public housing and placing them with people that might give them a shot a normal life? How much money would we have to drop low income neighborhoods until people would finally put their old ways aside and start seeing the world with new eyes? How much of it is money and how much of it is about power and respect? Is money the answer?

It was my honor to know, in their declining years, a couple of African American educators who were present at the begining of the desegregation of public schools.

If any of you Farkers think you have opinions about people refusing to access education you should have heard people who risked their lives to make it possible tee off.

Now, either volunteer as a tutor, buy the poorest kid in your kids class some books, or STFU.
