The park president said he doesn't believe there was a mechanical problem with the ride.

It was obviously rider error, somehow

"Every ride is checked every morning to make sure it runs properly and the Superman wide was checked Sunday morning and no problems were found, according to the park spokeswoman."

If they hadn't gotten stuck and that ride is anything like the former Superman ride (now Bizarro) at Six Flags New England, they'd owe those people some new shorts. I'm guessing some free passes are in order.

And if you're the operator of that ride, what do you say to the next guy in line?

From what I recall reading, the ride calculates launch velocity each time it's loaded, based on the specifics of the riders. So, from time to time, it won't give the car quite enough 'oomph' to get it up over the hill, and it stalls on top. So, a better explanation would have been "the ride isn't broken, it just made a slight calculation error." Which isn't something that a spokesperson would say, unfortunately.

Yeah, they were too fat to get all the way over the loop. This is why you don't put the big kid in the last car.

/no, I don't need a lecture on physics.

So evidently, a short shot can get stuck in the upper position. Heck, Xcelerator and Kingda Ka have had such sticking issues. A catwalk and a come along will do wonders to remedy those issues so much faster....

Getting stuck on top actually sounds like it might be pretty enjoyable, as long as I'd brought a hat and water. A rollback, on the other hand...

Never been stuck for any uber length of time on a roller coaster so don't know how I'd react.. but when I saw the headline I thought it was Magic Mountain's new Lex Luthor drop they attached to the superman ride.. If I got stuck at the very top on either one of those I'd be a little shaky.

Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point sometimes does not even clear the peak (at least when I was there opening summer). It then starts rolling backwards from 420 feet straight down. Man, if you did not know about that and it happened to you, I bet you would shiat your pants.

Also, sometimes something falling onto the tracks (like a hat or sweatshirt) can get caught up in the undercarriage and cause the vehicle to valley in a spot when the resistance keeps it from making it up a hill. I recall something like that being on the news for one of the Disney parks out here last summer. Whether or not you consider that a "mechanical problem" is up to you, I suppose.

I dunno, that's exactly what the Superman Escape from Krypton ride does at Magic Mountain.

Speaking of MM, I've been stuck on two rides there, both times fortunately just outside the station. Viper had an issue with a train in the station when I was in the other train waiting to enter. Also, Revolution crapped out about 5 feet from the loading area late one night. Both took around 15 minutes to correct. It is somewhat claustrophobic sitting there for a length of time with those horse collar restraints in place. I haven't been back to MM in a few years so not sure how things are now - this was before the new SF CEO took over. One of his pet projects was getting rid of crappy rides that were mainly kept limping along to bolster MM's coaster count (e.g. Flashback and Psyclone) and replacing them with worthwhile rides. Also, he was aware of the shoddy maintenance being done and revamped that program.

As for the incident up north, hell if I would be riding that thing after hearing, "Gee, sorry some folks got stuck up there for over an hour. We don't know what happened, but rest assured it will never happen again." Yeah, right. Find the problem and correct it, or design a fix. If it's a matter of the train getting stuck at the top of a "top hat" post-launch element, a retractable hydraulically driven tire would be enough to start it rolling back to the starting position.

/damn, should have been a coaster engineer

It's a simple math thing...

Force = Mass * Acceleration...

The coasters launcher has a set force it can deliver....so Force/mass = Acceleration...and the higher the Mass, the lower the Acceleration....

you end up with either, acceleration is good enough to get you over the crest, good enough to stick you on top of the crest (hooray, balanced equation!), or force isn't enough to crest, and you ride backwards down the hill because they operator let too many fatties get on in the first place.

Not if you're using the Force while you attend Mass.
