I'll wait for the expert opinion of Pat Robertson & Co to point out that Ebola only spreads by having sex with monkeys...

I would think this kind of situation would involve a no-fly/don't let anybody leave scenario..(?)

Seriously, one or more infected people travel to another country, have close contact; handshake, kissing, sex with others/infects others, who then in turn travel, etc.

Seems like this could be a major disaster.

The article doesn't say the cases were in the capitol, but that they were referred to a hospital in the capitol and that there was a quarantine to keep them from infecting anyone in the city. Not quite as scary as if they discovered it out in an open, urban environment. But it still sucks for those patients.

Yeah but if they shut down everything they'll look scared and weak, and people on the internet will mock them for being overly cautious. They might even use pictures with President Madagascar crossed out and rewritten President Uganda... The biggest insult an African can suffer. Better to let people die.

FTA:The first victim of the latest outbreak was a pregnant woman.

It then spread at a funeral, Mr Museveni said.

Now, if they could only persuade people to stop ritually washing/touching people who have died of the rather distinctive hemorrhagic disease symptoms at funerals.

Well, to be fair Kampala is not the sight of the international airport there. That would be Entebbe. Unfortunately Entebbe is only 10-20 miles south and considering the outbreak already had to travel a lot more than that to go from the West to the East... that's not all that far. What's more unfortunate is the reason why this outbreak went relatively unnoticed long enough for there to be an issue of it reaching the capital. The symptoms in this latest outbreak were somewhat atypical. Hemorrhagic fevers like Ebola typically involve lots of bleeding. The people infected either lacked this symptom or it wasn't as pronounced.

In this case, that sucks. A lot.

I'd say 25 SSW, but close enough!

and considering the outbreak already had to travel a lot more than that to go from the West to the East... that's not all that far. What's more unfortunate is the reason why this outbreak went relatively unnoticed long enough for there to be an issue of it reaching the capital.

TFA seems to indicate that the cases that wound up in Mulago hospital were brought there from Kibadistrict, which implies either an ambulance ride or a med-evac helicopter, if they have those.

I really hope they get this under control ASAP, though, since my wife is heading to Kampala to visit her side of the family in a week or so, along with our 7-month-old.

Given the relentless anti-gay attacks Uganda has been engaging in, you'd think God would be absolutely lavishing a righteous Christian nation like Uganda with his blessings and rewards.

Instead, a fresh outbreak of plague? Hm.

Pretty frightening.

A major reason most of the outbreaks of ebola so far have been in the African bush is that somewhere there is the natural reservoir of the disease. This is also the saving grace for us humans, since it limits the potential hosts for the disease to the number of people who have contact with each other in villages or towns where cars are a rarity and most travel is by foot.

If a case was on the street (as opposed to in a hospital) in a city of any size, the death toll could be enormous, as well as the chance of the infection traveling across borders. If you've read "The Hot Zone" remember the person referred to as "Nurse Mayinga"?

2012-07-30 03:56:52 PM
Well. Thank god there's no event going on right now where sample populations from hundreds of countries all over the world are congregating in a single spot for the approximate gestation period of the disease and then headed home via a jet from a single airport.
