hp6sa: Anyone watching the men's gymnastics finals? Seems like there are a lot of mistakes, falls, etc.

I wonder with both mens and womens gymnastics: is the quality of the performance decreasing as the difficulty increases? There is a continuous push to do more dangerous and difficult stunts, so much so that the olympic gymnastics of the 70s looks like a high school meet. Is this really in the best interest of the sport, as it is becomming less and less possible to complete a mistake-free routine? And is there a ceiling on the increasing difficulty, and what happens to the sport when we reach it?

Not to mention what a sick sport it is in terms of the athletes' physical health, especially the women.

I just wish they'd bring back judging scores so perfect performances could get some recognition. This whole deduction crap seems really silly to me.

I mean, this routine was ZOMG THE BEST GYMNASTICS EVAR in 1976. Now, that routine is done by nine year olds. When will we hit the ceiling of the human body's capabilities?

I'm not watching - USA men's or just men's in general?

Men's in general. USA seems to be doing pretty well, though.

What about Kissinger? He has lived in this country for at least 65 years, and he still has a thick accent.

Gunny Highway: Rev.K: I watched a lot of soccer yesterday, and the games were ridiculous.

How Honduras survived Spain is nothing short of miraculous. Holy crap.

It is my understanding that most countries send the B Teams to the Olympics. How Honduras' B Team beats Spain's B Team is beyond me though.

It's not really a "B Team", the Olympics only allows U-23 teams in the men's tournament. Each squad is allowed to add three over-23 players. That makes it slightly less stunning that Spain is out in the first round, but still surprising.

I reckon its more like an Einstien vs Newton sort of thing. Einstien brought math and physics a long ways past Newton. But he couldnt have ever done that without Newtons work before him. The current crop of gymnasts couldnt be where they are without the prior generations work giving them platforms to begin from and targets to shoot for.

Not really. In college gymnastics the difficulty is just as high but at least the women can stick everything. Then again college gymnasts tend to look a bit stronger physically than their Olympic counterparts.

When he coached Mary Lou Retton he couldnt even be understood. He has come a long way in speaking English from when he could barely do anything more than gutteral Romanian clicks and grunts.

I was wondering about this when they were showing the qualifications on Saturday. Granted, I didn't see the whole thing, just what was on in primetime, but they kept showing the Chinese and Japanese guys falling and yet they finished fifth and sixth in the team qualification. The three-time reigning world champ fell TWICE and somehow finished eighth in the all-around. I just couldn't figure it out.

Look at the difference between the US women and China, Russia, and Romania. At least ours look like they have flirted with puberty.

Maybe that's why we're doing so well this time. The sport has reached the point where a more muscled, athletic build is necessary to complete the advanced skills.

Background music while they set up for the medal ceremony. Which is just starting now. Which means we swap to Chariots of Fire.

If the US had a team made up of the top college gymnasts for the women, the differences would be even more stark.

It's a total divided between the snatch and the clean and jerk. So it's 246 kg divided in two lifts.

SlothB77: When i saw the box score of the USA/ France basketball game, at first i was confused that Tony Parker only played 26 mins and only took 11 shots. Then I realized France never tried to win that game. They were basically resting Parker. To have any chance, France needed Parker to play all 40 mins and take at least 20 shots. They weren't playing to win.

The US defense also ignored pretty much everyone who wasn't Tony Parker so it was kindof tough for him to get shots.
