Uhhh, actually? They prefer to be referred to as "The Wachowskis" now, ever since Larry began identifying as Lana.

Just sayin'.

The book was sheer brilliance, one of the best I've read in twenty years. It was also extremely complex, I have grave doubts as to how well it can translate into a movie without losing the nuance which made it such a great book. The trailer was beautiful, but it told me nothing about the preservation of the narrative. I remain dubious.

2012-07-30 10:23:56 AM
it seems like the movie would have to be six hours long to make any sense at all. the trailer looked like they were just showing random scenes from several different movies that have nothing in common. i'll watch it when it hits dvd.

2012-07-30 10:24:04 AM
Watched about a minute with the sound off. Seemed like It'd be giving away too much of the film.

I'll give them this: Succeed (Matrix, Animatrix) or fail (other Matrix films), their films aren't boring.

After The Matrix Revolutions and Speed Racer,I'm not that keen on Wachowski projects anymore.

Looks like The Fountain with a big budget and crappy (Halle Berry) actors.

Stellar cast.
Even if the screenplay sucks, you'll see some good acting.

2012-07-30 10:31:27 AM
They ran the Matrix trilogy on TV this weekend, and I always watch bits and pieces whenever they do. I always manage to find some new aspect of the second and third movies that simply defy logic.

This weekend, it was "OK, so building Zion must have been the most massive undertaking in human history, and somehow they didn't think to implement a sensible defense system?"

2012-07-30 10:32:02 AM
The trailer definitely needed six minutes to convey the general idea. Maybe I'll see it, maybe I won't, but at least now I have another book to read!

Count me in for Speed Racer - I love that little bastard. First film I bought on BluRay.

That said, I am remaining cautiously optimistic for Cloud Atlas - one of my favourite novels.

Looks like a film in desperate need of an editor. Not too many films can successfully tell multiple connected stories without getting lost somewhere along the way. The Wachowski's have never demonstrated that they have the skill to pull that off (if anything, there's copious evidence to the contrary).

I can't believe anyone is giving them money.

Barring that painful Polar Express abomination, I'll give anything with Tom Hanks in it a decent chance. Interesting to see Hugo Weaving in another one of their films, always like his performances. Never much cared for Halle Barry, but she looks more down to earth in this preview.

That said, this film looks like an acid trip and a half. I wonder if the actual film with be as jarring as the preview is.

Came here to say this. It looks like a poorly directed version of The Fountain, with WAY worse acting.

The book is absolutely amazing but I'm not sure how the nested story telling will work in a movie. It is so instrumental to the plot they can't take it out but I think viewers will be confused what the hell is happening if they don't know what the book is like.

With a 100+ million budget this seems like apretty big risk for studios.

2012-07-30 10:39:38 AM
I read the first three stories and just got bored with it...

Might try again...

The Fountain + Inception + The Matrix = Cloud Atlas

Will be visually stunning, but leave you thinking WTF did I just watch.

I agree. Considering the source material, I thought they did a great job with it. It may not have been a "great" film, but it sure was fun.

If a person grew up loving the Speed Racer cartoon, there's no way they walked away from that movie anything but completely happy.

That is funny I considered The Fountain to be an attempt to make a filmable version of Cloud Atlas. It played on some of the same themes; love, hope, interconnectedness of humanity but simplified things to make it easier to follow.

Well, it's not like they directed it alone. They got Tom Tykwer in on it too and I like his story telling aesthetic.

I did too. It was cheesy (but so was the cartoon) and different enough to be interesting. Id like to watch it again on shrooms.

Good/Entertaining Wachowski Movies
Assassins
Bound
The Matrix
The Matrix Reloaded
V for Vendetta
Speed Racer

Bad Wachowski Movies
The Matrix Revolutions

So, one stinker means they shouldn't make movies anymore?

Given that the headline refers to the "Wachowski Brother's" next movie, subby was apparently only referring to the male-identifying Wachowski.

Looks like a movie based on the premise that loosely displaying grandiose themes such as past-present-future and birth-life-death is something other than one big epic jerkoff.

Ok, from the wikipedia entry on the book:

Plot summary

The novel consists of six nested stories that take the reader from the remote South Pacific in the nineteenth century to a distant, post-apocalyptic future. Each tale is revealed to be a story that is read (or observed) by the main character in the next. All stories but the last are interrupted at some moment, and after the sixth story concludes at the center of the book, the novel "goes back" in time, "closing" each story as the book progresses in terms of pages but regresses in terms of the historical period in which the action takes place. Eventually, readers end where they started, with Adam Ewing in the Pacific Ocean, circa 1850.

The Hacks Wachowski are going to attempt this? LOL

I sometimes wonder who they stole The Matrix' script from, the turds they have since pinched off sure could have used his or her writing ability.

I've been given to understand that the studio made Aronofsky cut 30 minutes off "The Fountain" for release. After rewatching it at the behest of a friend, I can say that this decision probably cut the film off at the knees. There's a good film in all that mess, but it wasn't given enough room to breathe.

Because Zion was nothing more than another computer generated matrix created for nothing more than to give humans hope ?

Needs more cowbell. And a Khan scream.

Seriously, it looks very interesting and very, very ambitious. The post description pretty much nails it.
