This must be the "lets watch everyone suck" part of the competition.

And now we cut to China messing up. U-S-A! U-S-A!

Well, they're not team USA.

Damn, poor kid. Beam is such a biatch.

WhyteRaven74: interesting question, whose parents have screwed up more, an Olympic gymnast's or a stripper's?

Well, let's compare. Strippers had no father, the cycle of single motherhood there. Daddy issues and all that.

Gymnasts usually have both parents, but were shipped to a surrogate when they were six.

I will call it a wash.

rhiannon: chuggernaught: rhiannon: Serious (dumbass) question: are they holding different station competitions at the same time or are the others I see in the background practicing?

Different stations at the same time.

Really. You'd think that'd be annoying as all get out with the music and announcers.

I hear you. They seriously have to focus. Someone has an outstanding performance across the room, the crowd goes nuts in the middle of your routine, would be enough to get in your head.

Think they only play music for the floor routines.

That backpack is bigger than that girl.

2012-07-29 11:39:15 PM
All the time and money put in to these things and the numbers are safety pinned to their backs?

Isn't that...like....dangerous

2012-07-29 11:39:31 PM
Are they cherry picking the worst performances of Russia and China to make Americans feel better, I wonder?

2012-07-29 11:39:43 PM
That Chinese girl's backpack look like it weighs more than she does.

rhiannon: Really. You'd think that'd be annoying as all get out with the music and announcers.

This always gets me. This kinda stuff, baseball players trying to hit a 90 MPH pitch with 50,000 screaming fans, etc.

Yet if somebody breathes heavy in a golf tournament the shiat hits the fan.

chuggernaught: the crowd goes nuts in the middle of your routine, would be enough to get in your head.

Wonder if it isn't like some other sports, where while you're competing you're not even aware of anything around you. Mind just blocks it out.

2012-07-29 11:42:45 PM
NBC, that better not be a tease, we want Misty May in an actual bikini tomorrow

Sounds right. They're probably very used to it if they get to the Olympic level.

Feel bad for that Chinese gymnast on the beam, worked her whole life for a shot at the Olympics.

The way they're talking about this Russian kid, it makes you wonder how she's lived this long without someone drowning her.

To be fair, that's only like 12 years for her...

So, are those the only two Russian girls that are good?

2012-07-29 11:50:53 PM
bulldg4life: I did want to ask...why the fark don't they add another 4-6 inches to the field hockey sticks?

That's what I've always wondered - that must be absolutely brutal on their backs.

It's almost as if they weren't prepared for the Olympics.

WhyteRaven74: Pincy: I wouldn't be surprised if the US was influential in lobbying for that rule many years ago when the Soviets and other Eastern block countries were dominating women's gymnastics

This is the first Olympics with that rule....

Hey, I just checked with my wife who is an expert on all things gymnastics and this is not a new rule actually. In Atlanta the US team was bit by the same thing. She also confirmed my suspicions that the US lobbied for this rule back in the Cold War days because the Soviets were so dominating.

They're prepared just that the people who got blocks of tickets decided to screw over everyone.

rhiannon: Atypical Person Reading Fark: In swimming, you don't have to be aerodynamic.

Hawaiians swim with pearls and other decorative objects.

Not sure if that was directed to me but I was talking about this Wieber girl.

And I was pointing out that people who swim well sometimes wear jewelry.

No idea if it's hydrodynamic - but that matters more than being aerodynamic.

OK.....so, in Dressage...if the horse takes a dump while during the event, how many points are deducted?

The More I Want To Know..........

I think you'd really only get a 1 during that particular segment or two of the pooping. Then again you might lose some points for impulsion. However freedom and pace of movement scores might go up to help counteract that.

[i.imgur.com image 320x240]

Never thought I would have so much fun watching women's table tennis.

/No, I will not have a seat over there. I don't want to have sexy time with her, I just enjoyed watching her compete.

I also really enjoyed watching that table tennis match between US and Chinese women. Me and all of China that is. It's a huge sport in Asian countries.

Earguy: I'm old enough to remember Nadia Comenichi. That was some magic.

I'm also old enough. Olympics were in Montreal so everthing was in real time. Remember that Nadia just didn't make any mistakes on any of the apparatus. No one had seen anything like that. And she performed so effortlessly. My brother was 20 then. That was the only Olympics I think he watched. But remember that he was quite infatuated with Nadia and was very sad when the Olympics was over.

Wikipedia trawling, it looks like the rule was added between the 1972 Olympics and the 1976 Olympics (the finals had 36 people limited to 3 per team instead of 24 people limited to 2 per team back then). In 1976 (warning, ginormous .pdf file; relevant results on page 290), there were six Soviet gymnasts in the top nine after qualification, and the Romanians and East Germans both had four gymnasts in the top fifteen.
