geom_00: I really hope that the area around London STAYS this nice after the Games.

China and Athens Olympic sites are just so sad. Sarajevo's is a bombed out hole.

Atlanta didn't do half bad.

Centennial Park is still pretty cool with concerts. And, I know the horse park gets a lot of use.

It's too bad they didn't spend a billion dollars on public transportation when they had a chance.

Dated a swimmer in college. They do things that non-swimmers simply can't.

Holding their breath longer?

That was a major plus, yes. But they are fantastic at things which require calf and upper-body strength.

Ok but what about sheep? Was she into sheep as well?

pjlawrence81: what's the deal about the dreaded "lane 8"?

Same as lane 8 in track, everyone is to the side of you, and the fastest people tend to be in the middle lanes, so you you have to swim with no awareness of how they're doing.

Lanes toward the outside make it much harder to keep an eye on your opponents and see the pace. There might be more too it, that's all I know.

Earguy: Can you earn an American record in Europe?

You can earn one anywhere. National records are nothing more than the fastest time in an event by a competitor of a given nationality. Can be set anywhere, and you don't need to finish first, as we just saw, to set one. It's all about the time.

pjlawrence81: So for those of us who only follow competitive swimming every 4 years, what's the deal about the dreaded "lane 8"?

The outside lanes suck because of turbulence. The newer pools being built are trying to take the wave action out of the pool. China did major progress on this in 2008.

Also, lane assignments are by qualifying times like in track. So if you're in lane 8, you were the slowest of the top 8 in qualifying.

Phelps was in 8 when he lost yesterday, and that was the first time I'd heard the announcers mention lane 8 like it was an automatic loss or something. If it's about not being able to check the pace of the other swimmers, how come lane 1 doesn't get the same derision?

ChubbyTiger: TheDumbBlonde: ChubbyTiger: Earguy: Imma gonna pour me a drink. Play amongst yourselves.

Already started on the rye. Thanks, though.

As an aside, wtf is rye anyway? Someone needs to educate me on this point.

Just a grain. See above for a more detailed description. It yields a spicy whiskey compared to maize, which gives a sweet whiskey. I love rye and I prefer my bourbon to be about 40% rye to balance the sweetness, too. If you'd like to try one, assuming that you like whiskey, try Old Portrero Rye. It is not super cheap, but it is delicious. Note, not the 18th Century whiskey, which is also a rye; it is an advanced whiskey and not something to start with.

/that Johnson kid is cute

Just as a note of clarification:

In the specific case of bourbon (as opposed to other types of whisky) there's also "wheated" and "rye" bourbons--the primary grain in any bourbon (particularly Kentucky straight bourbon) must be corn (51 percent of the grain by law) but either wheat or rye is added to the mash mixture both to provide enzymes for breaking down sugars in corn (sprouted grains particularly) AND to influence the flavour.

Wheated bourbons tend to be more sweet and mellow, whilst ryed bourbons tend to be spicier (but can still make fine sipping bourbon). Maker's Mark and (on the very smooth end of things) Blanton's are examples of wheated bourbons, whilst Knob Creek (in both small batch and single barrel versions) is an accessible ryed bourbon with the (in)famous Wild Turkey 101 being a barley-and-ryed bourbon.

To further complicate things, there are non-bourbon whiskies that also tend to emphasize rye as the dominant grain in fermentation (these are usually what folks refer to when talking about rye whisky) and even different bourbons from the same distillery will have either rye or wheat as the dominant secondary grain (Austin Nichols being an example of a distillery that does both wheated and ryed bourbons and true non-bourbon rye whiskys).

/yeah, I like my boozahol
