"They combine extreme speed and brutality of modern death metal with the ancient styling of middle eastern music."

Now I respect good death metal, but I'm not sure I could hear much ancient styling here. I was expecting a little more Kashmir in the mix. Lots of grunting, at any rate.

How about mixing some bass into the music? That might help make Nile listenable.

Sunday Heavy Metal House Call.

All I heard was fast drums and the Cookie Monster yelling. I'll come back when there's actual music.

Talent, bass, consistent structure, a halfway decent mix...

You guys listen to some really terrible music. I don't understand how a lot of these guys take themselves seriously. Like those black metal bands that burn down churches in Eastern Europe, there has to be a point when you wake up and think, "why at 40 years old am I still wearing makeup and leather pants?"

Not trying to be a dick, but one would assume that after having an account for 10 1/2 years, and taking the time to pony up the money for TF, that you might have clicked on a SHMHC link, or two, in your day.
Do you recall the "Music" tab?

Again, no disrespect; just kind of amazed.

In a nutshell: the SHMHC started several years ago when people started submitting metal videos on Sundays and a certain nameless admin who is also a metalhead (*ahem*cough*) starting greening them.

Then, like most things on Fark, it grew organically, was given a name and became a weekend tradition not unlike Caturday, only with far fewer photos and a lot more headbanging.

Folks like HighZoolander and others can give a more detailed history if anyone is interested.

Saw Agalloch this week. It was awesome.

Informative post.
Can you offer any insight why the "Music" tab was eliminated?
I assumed it was a legal (RIAA) kind of thing.

Rudra is the band you're looking for

Also acceptable - Kirtikeya or Melechesh

Understandable question. I've clicked them, saw what they were, never gave a shiat. Didn't get around to asking what the acronym was until today.

Other than asking as I did, how does anyone know what SHMHC stands for? 10 years in or not...

Eh... I really wanted to like this. Can any of you metal heads point to good metal where the vocalists aren't choking on their own vomit? I like the music, but damn... the 'cookie monsters' (as it was just put) make me roll my eyes. It's -terrible-. Hell, I'd even listen to instrumental metal.

I just don't know where to look. Is there even any left anymore outside of the growlers? If any is out there, thanks for the pointers.

There is some, but it's in the minority these days.

Doom is probably the genre that still features (mostly)* clean vocals, but if you don't like slow music, that might not appeal to you.

Here are some things - let us know if any are in the right direction, and I'm sure you'll get plenty of good stuff before long.

Wolf - I will kill again (trad metal)

Candlemass - If I ever die (doom, but a fast song)

Lord Vicar - Child Witness (doom)

Tyr - Hold the Heathen Hammer High (folk)

Ghost - Ritual (trad, sort of, listen to it)

Hammers of Misfortune - The Day the City Died (progressive)

Holy Grail - My Last Attack

plus a lot of the old bands are still going, like Accept, Overkill, etc., and they have put out very good albums recently.

*well, not funeral doom, death-doom, or sludge doom per se, but...

Everything that could be done in metal with clean singing was done from 1970-1990. It's been all downhill since Painkiller. Sure, there have been a few gems here and there, but unless European Power Metal or Dream Theater-ish prog is your thing, just stick with your old albums.

For instrumental, it doesn't get much better than Blotted Science, but Pelican and Scale the Summit have some good ones too.

It gets spelled out occasionally, but not often.

The linked song and headline are almost completely irrelevant, it's really just an excuse to post links to good metal in the thread - things you enjoyed or think anyone else would want to listen to - any styles, genres, old, new, whatever, the more links the better.

It's very hard to find new non-growly metal but here's a couple off the top of my head

Om (stoner doom - the genre that probably has the most clean singing)

Yakuza

Manilla Road

Boris

The Lord Weird Slough Feg

Vektor (more screaming than growling - not exactly clean vocals but certainly not guttural)

1) Listenable
2) Egypt-themed
3) Vaguely classifiable as metal even by today's standards

For Middle-Eastern/Egyptian styled metal try some Senmuth, Al-Namrood, Darkestrah, and the aforementioned Melechesh.

Yes, really distorted angry music with typically violent lyrical content should be delivered with celine dion style vocals

That's not a fact at all, it's your opinion, and you'd get on much better if you stopped confusing the two.

That said, I'm delighted that you have an opinion and chose to share it, but my earlier response was just to point out that your criticism about 40 year olds applies just as well to almost any musicians who still dress up to put on shows as they get older. And I'd even agree with you - the imagery can be pretty silly, whether you're Elton John, fat Elvis, or in a black metal band.

But the imagery doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the music, and often creates the atmosphere I'm looking for in a performance. your mileage may vary.

Damn, there was some good stuff in there. The only downside is I can't stand being preached at, whether by Pagans or Christians. I grew up with both and now I can't stand to listen to either, lol. Just love that music.

But of what has been listed I've been grabbed by Wolf, Charred Walls of the Damned, Sabaton. Blotted Science was farking *ridiculous*. God damn that was intense!

The whole damn thread is going in my bookmark list. Score!

Thanks metalheads!
