Good lord, I don't often grammar nazi, but the multiple exclamation marks thing bugs the fark out of me.

I'm sorry, but "feeling breathless" reading badly punctuated email does not even compare to the breathlessness of "Episode 18 - Penelope" from Ulysses.

Reading "Penelope" is like falling rapidly down hill tumbling over and over and over inside a barrel or truck tire unable to stop for farking miles and *never* being able to catch your breath while another part of you is simultaneously skydiving naked from the edge of space without an oxygen mask and when you hit atmosphere the wind whips around your dangly bits oh yes oh yes oh yes oh yes.

Yeah, I'm a little sensitive to the exclamation points thing - I'm trying to give 'em a rest. And emoticons - well, I date online, so I'm forever trying to gauge people's preferences in these matters. I wonder what it would be like to just write how I like, and let everybody deal with it...? Also, though, I'm sure my main issue is ellipses; I abuse the hell out of them. I'm sure a shrink or handwriting analyst would have something to say about fearing commitment or something....

Ugh, yeah, I abuse ellipses, but I ALWAYS USE THEM PROPERLY!! I hate people that use too many periods. Or two. Or freakin' commas. My FB friends must be particularly dumb....

Oh you're not. I've always found sardonic humor in having a boss whose grammar is effectively several grades below my own. I'll get an email such as:

"see u at the meeting. their are some things im exited to discus"

Seeing that my inner grammar Nazi kicks in, and I just grin and think to myself, "And yet somehow, that person is my boss."

Sure I make grammar errors too. Everyone does. At least I try to make the effort to proof-read and edit my own work before making myself appear like a juvenile.

See? Forgot a comma where it's appropriate. But I, unlike my typical leadership, actually noticed.

This reminds me of a funny facebook picture where some guy convinced his grandma that lol was short for "lots of love". It was all fun and games until someone died and grandma posted something like, "I'm sorry to hear your father died, LOL!"

I've had discussions with friends over this very topic. When writing, I tend to follow the Chicago Manual of Style, only because that's the reference book I have. It says to use the oxford comma. But journalists, who supposedly use the AP manual won't use the oxford. Either way, both are technically correct.

I had a writing teacher to said that every writer has a lifetime allotment of just 9 exclamation points. Choose them carefully.

I think I've used up 5 or 6. And yes, I'm a professional writer.

Heh, well played, though I'd argue that my use of grammar above is viable since nouns often get used as adjectives, but since their is no dictionary entry for grammar as an adjective, I have to give you that one.

I picked up "loooooooool" from some old friends of mine, the longer the funnier. If it's long enough, I might have actually chuckled!

I'm just glad smartphones have mostly eliminated txtspk in daily writing.
