If you don't already know the answer, no amount of explaining will help.

It was very nice of them to provide a picture of one in a bikini for us to stare at to prove their point.

The study really didn't explain why women are more often perceived as a collection of parts, it just said that was more generally the case among both genders than for men.

2012-07-29 12:14:21 PM
Well, women do generally have nicer looking parts than men do.

2012-07-29 12:15:10 PM
Great, now women will stop yelling at me for objectifying them, because they're just as guilty.

/who am I kidding, no they won't.

A friend who is in the closet tells me that she stares at other people because she's "practicing her gaydar."

I wonder what would happen if I started using that line.

Now if only they could explain why women's breasts can't stop staring at my eyes.

2012-07-29 12:18:26 PM
I was under the impression that the boys watch the girls while the girls watch the boys who watch the girls go by.

Only women protest about men objectifying them. You never hear of men complaining about being objectified by women.

theorellior: The study really didn't explain why women are more often perceived as a collection of parts, it just said that was more generally the case among both genders than for men.

Well, yea, but it wasn't the research question for this study to ask "why" since they were trying to established "if." Also, technically, the researchers didn't conclude women are perceived as a collection of parts. Their findings indicate that when it comes to recognizing women, there tends to be a bias towards local processing (processing of specific details, components, or parts) whereas when it comes to recognizing men there tends to be a bias towards global processing (processing holistically, context-dependent). It says nothing, for example, about initial perceptions - say, of a person you've just seen for the first time, only on recognizing a person you've seen at least briefly before.

Also, TFA described the procedure of the study incorrectly:

The study presented standardised images of clothed men and women to 227 subjects made up of equal numbers of both genders. They were shown a sequence of images before two images settled on their screen. One was an original image, the other simply showed the groin area.

Not quite. Participants were shown an image of a person, and then they were presented with two images. One of them was slightly modified (e.g. to be thinner, thicker, etc.) while the other was unmodified. The pair of pictures were either the fully body or just chest or just waist (secondary sexual characteristics). At no point was there a groin-area picture.

All I know is that the woman in the first pic didn't have any cleavage.

Why do men stare at women? Well, I can think of two reasons...

2012-07-29 12:31:41 PM
A beautiful woman is like a perfect sculpture chiseled from marble.....the lines, the curves, the symmetry. A beautiful woman is like a piece of artwork.......and I'd like to have with it to fully experience it's beauty.

I can name two reasons I keep staring at the Roadkill T-Shirt ad on the right.
/What?!

A properly placed apostrophe is a thing of beauty as well. That wasn't one.

Wife: "Wow, corsets really make boobs dance in your face, don't they? They're all up there and jiggly while they walked."
Me: "Yeah... I was trying not to stare. I tried to only look at people from the chin up."
Wife: "I wasn't. I stared at boobs all day."

Truly a mystery.

Personally, I can't believe that God put beauty in the world with the intention for it to be ignored. The beauty of the human form, male and female, is one of the most convincing proofs of the existence of a Divine Being that I can think of. Moreover, the variety of forms and features that people find beautiful, even in cases where others might not find the same to be attractive in any wise, seem to me to be proof of God's benevolent wish that all people find some beauty in their lives. For me, appreciation of beauty, whether it be in Nature, the Human figure, or even in Reason or Mathematics, is the purest form of praise worship that I can offer to the Creator, with perhaps the exception of the creation of things of beauty.

/At least that's what I tell my wife when she catches me checking out the girls in yoga pants.

It's been awhile since I read my Fauso-Sterling, but I thought that herms were a subset of IS? I admit I was a little fuzzy on it at the time, too. And I think Fausto-Sterling's views also evolved, though again, I confess I don't remember the details now.

FTA: Men and women were more likely to recognise body parts when shown images of women. Both were more likely to recognise the whole image when shown pictures of men.

I've seen results of this "scientific" study numerous times on various websites and Fark, but it only ever says people are "more likely". What the hell does that mean? 55% likely? 95%? 100%? I have yet to see any articles that even give a hint of the actual results.

You got your quotes in the wrong spot. It should be:
I've seen "results" of this scientific study numerous times...
since your complaint is that the numbers were not given. That is a reporting fail, not a science fail. (Also they should link the actual paper)

Because you generally can't hear boobs from across the room.

Eh, traditionally, there were "true hermaphrodites" and "pseudohermaphrodites". The term "intersexed" is supposed to cover all of those conditions without the designations of "true" or "false". (Medical people and groups like ISNA are trying to push the term "DSD" or Disorders of Sexual Development.

Fausto-Sterling came up with the terms "herms" to designate "true" hermaphrodites, "merms" for male pseudohermaphrodites and ferms for female pseudohermaphrodites, but claims she did this with tongue-in-cheek.

These terms are generally not used in the intersexed community in my experience.

Every day is breast awareness day. We stare because we care.

Because we have a biological imperative to choose the best mate? Because we can appreciate the beauty of the human form, despite a few centuries of trying our damnedest to suppress sexuality for religious or social reasons?

2012-07-29 08:44:55 PM
Why is this a problem? The human brain, upon first glance, uses local processing to identify a woman. "Hey, I see girl parts!" A human can consciously override this first glance and say, "Hey, this is not just a jumble of parts. It's a woman."

As for staring at women? There are a lot of good-looking people in this world, male and female. Might as well look at them.

Incorrect. Five of them were hermaphrodites.
