With any luck, this will end up in a pool of Jell-O with the winner ripping her top off in victory

Then may Hope Solo win.

OK, someone explain how the game has changed in the last 10 years.

Are there actually rules changes, etc. that conceivably justify making this claim?

// Other than they made it more boring?

1. She's an analyst

2. That's what analysts do

3. I don't give a sh*t if the game changed, a defender losing possession has always been bad.

It hasn't. Hope Solo is just thinned-skinned. When the woman whose kick won the World Cup offers a mild criticism, you just shut up and take it.

Is there any single image more associated with American soccer than Brandi Chastain on the grass?

Interesting. Lets break this word down.

Anal: of, relating to, or situated near the anus

YST disambiguation: can either be Yolk Sack Tumor or Yukon Standard Time.

Conclusion? I don't want to be an analyst.

Saw that live and it was insanely obvious even at real speed. Can't believe a player wouldn't get in trouble for a sucker punch.

Chastain's comments were dead on but Solo is defending her team mates, like a team mate should. She's not letting others throw her mates under the bus, like she did a few years back.

Yeah, keepers are like that too. I'd suggest they not worry about what the analysts are saying and focus on their game, but it's not surprising that she would speak out.

Considering Hope hasn't won a World Cup, she has nothing to say to Brandi. She couldn't hold Brandi's jock, er, sports bra. And yes, even the English know that it's not tactically sound for a defender to cough up the ball in her own end.

Chastain, while an analyst can come across as a total coont.

She didn't win the game against China, she made a penalty kick, nothing more, how about the misses from the Chinese team or the saves from Scurry?

The game has changed since the early days of American dominance, other countries have invested in their own national programs and the international playing field is much stronger. It is no longer just US, China, and Norway. There are plenty of strong teams that create problems for players (such as defenders under much more pressure).

As a Bay Area resident I loathe Brandi and the goddess like platform she is place on. She is just a loudmouth with a mic.

While this household loves its hockey more, good international soccer is exciting because it certainly is the world's game.

//experienced a Costa Rica national game deep in the jungle with a whole host of local jungle dwellers on a small b/w tv run by a generator. Nothing like that happens here in the US, was quite exciting.

I'm pretty sure that qualifies as "winning the game".

To be fair, Bueller does stink. I've watched a lot since the women's world cup, and while she's tough, she's really slow and gets beat a ton. Backline's weak link, in my humble opinion.

Is this the thread where people come in and talk about how much soccer sucks?

Also, Hope, I love you. So much. But PLEASE bring home some gold before you lay into what some TV talking head (who just so happens to be a WC and Olympic gold winner) is on about.

Defenders shouldn't be coughing up the ball in the wrong third. She's got a point.

RadioAaron: Is this the thread where people come in and talk about how much soccer sucks?

I love soccer. I've played soccer 35 of my 40 years. That said, soccer is boring to watch. All soccer (sans indoors) is like watching paint dry. Women's soccer is one of the few female sports where there isn't as much drop off from men's sports, but it still is as boring as hell. It's a great sport to watch the highlights for, and you can see the exciting parts of a 90 minute match in less than 2 minutes usually.

2012-07-29 05:19:33 PM

mjbok: That said, soccer is boring to watch.

See, I feel the exact opposite. I LOVE the game, on TV and in person. It doesn't stop. Yeah, it's not always exciting, but I think that's what makes those spikes in action so prominent. That moment where the match changes in the blink of an eye. Think Landon Donovan in stoppage time against Algeria.

//Now my favorite sport to watch

The only time I found live soccer exciting was watching World Cup games in Chicago. Of course it was a good match, plus it was the world cup.

Somewhat contrasting photos of the two, eh?
On the left dressed in foreboding dark colors and scowling, we have the ax murderess contemplating mayhem, Hope Solo
And on the right, dressed in perky floral print and flashing the little Mary Sunshine smile , Brandi Chastain.

Writer must be looking for a job with either FOX news or MSNBC.

Chastain is terrible as a commentator. I chuckled at Hope's tweet because I actually did mute her a couple times.

Also, Hope is simply defending her teammate, nothing more. Bueller is good, btw. Thank god they finally swapped Mitts for LePeilbet in game two.

Yeah, it's good when you have the chance to take the winning penalty in the World Cup final after your goalkeeper cheated to save one from the opposition.

I have NOT been impressed with Chastain in the booth...But mostly because of her tendency to over explain soccer, a problem most of ESPN's announcers stopped having by the 2010 World Cup.
