I have to agree with Lenny...

Here in this nuthouse called Flori-duh, It seems lately, that when in the "boom times" of the housing market, the schools were the absolute last place to get any cut of the tax money and such rolling in... Now that the housing market went to hell, the first place they started cutting funds was from the schools...

Then, on top of all that, most teachers haven't gotten a raise in 4-6 years, but the payscale has gone up sort of normally... So now, a starting teacher has the potential to be making more than a teacher that has been working for 6 years or so... So why stick around?

See why it's not much of a stretch?

hbalien: What the fark is a Bight?

Wikipedia:

In geography, bight has two meanings. A bight can be simply a bend or curve in any geographical feature-usually a bend or curve in the line between land and water.

Alternatively, the term can refer to a large (and often only slightly receding) bay. It is distinguished from a sound by being shallower. Traditionally explorers defined a bight as a bay that could be sailed out of on a single tack in a square-rigged sailing vessel, regardless of the direction of the wind (typically meaning the apex of the bight is less than 25 degrees from the edges).

There has been a trend of late to define the continent of Oceania as containing Australia and the South Pacific Islands.

Continents are like planets. The definitions predate our modern knowledge and so are more conveniences than facts.

If we were to define them using the continental shelves, our maps would look *very* different (for example, a good chunk of Siberia would be in North America).

Do you ever consider that you are in a position that sort of filters out the wheat from the chaff? I suppose I need more information about the job you've described, but it sounds like a position in which you screened calls for a call in radio program?

Think about the type of individual who would even bother to call in, it would be an opinionated man or woman who thinks they're going to change the hosts mind by calling in. Sort of in the same vein of people who go on the Jerry Springer style of shows to address their marital woes. I suppose the point i'm making is, some of the smarter people realize the futility, and don't bother to call in.

So perhaps you were in an echo chamber of sorts, that gives the impression of abject stupidity... Or maybe we are indeed surrounded by, and in the control of, idiots.

Irving Maimway: I can tell not many of my co workers read Fark, I try this and the Anne Frank one all the time and no one gets it.

Me to. There are a few other jokes of the same type I'll use a lot along with purposely mispronouncing a few words that I think sound funny. Some people probably think I'm about as smart as Jessica Simpson or her old boyfriend Nick Lay-cheese.

Is the "people eat each other here" comment a reference to Pliny the Elder's Natural History, where he describes southern Africa as being inhabited by the Anthropophagi? (Or from one of his sources?)

I realize Pliny the Elder lived a pretty damned long time ago and that we've learned a great deal about the world since then, but every time I read something that's been attributed to him I have to stop myself from wanting to invent time travel just to smack the ignorant out of him.

Also, I doubt that it's a reference to him in the image but more likely to 1700 - 1800's propaganda designed to dehumanize the people of Africa and help justify slavery.

I believe that image is the Wikipedia map showing the location of the nation of Georgia.

Ah, okay. That makes a sort of Farkish sense in the context of this thread and its memes. For some reason when I saw it I was thinking it was just Ossetia, and not Georgia + the disputed regions so it didn't click.

Thanks!

I've worked in a position where I take calls from random citizens on the issues of the day. The average American is a moron.

You're a political market researcher? Why don't you farkING DIE IN A FIRE AND ROT IN HELL.

Of COURSE you talk to morons. Everyone else hangs up or has call blocking.

Nope. Not for a radio show either. It involved the US Government. People would call up the place where I worked to comment on an issue within our purview (or not- there was one guy I sent over to NASA's switchboard a few times, he kept calling with his idea on spacecraft designs. A theoretically mature adult.), and well, somebody has to take those calls.

Yes, there was self selection involved, but you got people who genuinely cared and thought they knew about the issue they were calling about, except for the odd person who called to ask a question, usually old people who didn't have or didn't know how to use the internet. But for the majority of callers, the job entailed listening politely, logging their call, and rolling your eyes.

And no, I really don't want to get more specific on exactly where I worked. I've commented on it before in various aspects, and I wouldn't be surprised if some have guessed it if they've read enough of my posts. But I doubt anyone cares enough to sleuth it out.

We've been gutting education for three decades. It's not a stretch.

North Cuba doesn't count.

Is primarily mountainous with the Alps and foothills covering the western and southern provinces.
