I have to admit, I actually kind of get a kick out of those "lesser" sports like badminton and table tennis. This is pretty much all they have.

Not to say that it has the drama to draw a lot of viewers but badminton is a seriously aerobic sport. It ain't easy.

One of my college buddies is a former badminton player-turned-umpire who officiated at the previous two Olympics (not sure if she's in London right now). It's never been very popular in the U.S., but has quite a following in many Asian countries.

It's also counted as the fastest racquet sport there is, the shuttlecocks can reach over 200mph after a solid smash

Sounds like corporations bought tickets and no one at said corporations took them up on it. Also known as, how the Red Sox keep the streak alive.

They're not in the "bought" blocks. They're the Olympic Family sections. IE VISA, McDonalds, Coca-cola.

The plan is to now fill them with service personal and school kids.

I love watching the smaller sports. These kids probably gave up having a childhood to play handball/badminton/etc and the only time they're around other people who understand is at the Olympics.

Yesterday we had fencing and archery. Why were those not prime-time sports? Do that many Americans really want to see underage people leap about for a score?

Well, maybe in central PA...

I can only speak for this American, but I want to see ALL of the sports get coverage on U.S. TV. Not just mostly events that freature U.S. competitors. Olympics coverage sucks in the U.S.

If it is like previous olympics the refs are much quicker to call fouls. I predict a few US players foul out before adapting.

Does NBC have a farking clue what they're doing? They have women's cycling on NBC right now and USA basketball on NBC Sports. The fact that the international press praised the Opening as one the best ever (where they all mainly had the BBC feed) while the US press has been far more lukewarm just goes to show how editing and naff commentary really can butcher something.

I was ambivalent about Meredith Viera and Matt Lauer before this, but after the opening cermony I can't stand them. At one point she literally said "I'm going to shut up now" and then proceeded to talk for another 2 minutes.

I get that their day jobs involve them filling air time with endless chatter, but someone should have told them that's not necessary at the Olympics.

Don't you have multi-channel pic-in-pic in the US? The BBC has like 20 Olympic channels, with digital red button showing you exactly what's going on everywhere simultaneously, all with superb commentary.

I'm leaping between canoeing and diving. There's even glorious periods of commentary silence between the rounds, so you can jump around the alternative channels and know you're not missing anything.

I'm talking about in general. I had to find out about the men's archery team going for the gold on my own yesterday, and I just happened to switch to MSNBC in time to catch Terrell Gausha's comeback win (by knockout) in boxing. If I knew they would be showing that kind of stuff on NBC, I would stay on that channel.

You just like to brag don't you? :P

We can watch every event online but it's just the raw feed from the Olympic Broadcasting Service. Which is fine with me because the US commentators never say anything productive or informative.

On my cable provider in addition to it airing on 5 different channels (NBC, NBCSN, CNBC, MSNBC, BRAVO), we also have 2 additional channels for the Olympics. One is for Soccer and the other is basketball.

It's nifty but nothing compared to "The Digital Olympics" that the BBC is touting about for their service.

There's also a Crotch Cam for every event, that gives you practically gynecological views of the competitors.

Even dressage. Massive horse dong.

Speaking of commentators, the big surprise four years ago was in badminton, NBC had Bill Clement doing it, turns out he was provincial champ as a teen in addition to being a good hockey player. And he was by himself, so he was doing play by play and color, and he actually got it. Then again probably be more of it if they let the commentators who are athletes just do things by themselves.

No, that sounds awesome. *sigh* We don't even get some events live because they want to save them for prime time. I had to watch swimming online yesterday to see it as it was happening, instead of at 8pm or whenever it was they showed it.

Having worked for an NBC affiliate during the '96 Atlanta games I can tell you that everything was shown tape delayed on the West Coast even though we could watch the live feeds in the sat room....part of it is definitely for the ratings and to have the bigger audience during prime...and to get the most exposure for your sponsors.....

You can only get the streaming if you have a cable provider that carries both CNBC and MSNBC (requires you to login). Some people have had the feed crash on them repeatedly as well. Don't get me wrong, it's still nice, but not as nice as it could be.

2012-07-29 11:04:26 AM
I can understand the tape delay for certain events, but I don't understand why they can't quickly find the more exciting events from earlier in the day and just play it during primetime. I mean, I'd rather see 3 medal rounds in the amount of time NBC decided to devout to a series of boring swimming events.

You *need* commentary. Good commentary.

Most events are very hard to follow without commentary, as they're often obscure sports with quite technical rules.

Raw feed is dull and impenetrable.

I don't mind the commercials at the end of every round of boxing, but at least let the commentators finish their sentence.

The syncro diving is good.

For those of us in Britain with just a tv arial all we have is three channels with a choice of HD or standard def plus after 7pm a rolling highlights channel.

I might have to see how much a HD/SD freesat dish costs to get all 24 channels

Yeah but there is a reason why some of these are so poorly attended the TV ratings reflect that fact.

Wimbledon is only widely attended because its a historical tennis event.

And thanks from KY.

Thanks to miserable hockey coverage in the US I had a bunch of links saved from the playoffs & was using some of them to find streams. The kayak races were interesting except that the audio commentary was about 30 seconds ahead of the video so it was a bit confusing (although it did give you a chance to wake up from a stupor & pay attention when the commentators started shouting about something....)

This link seems to be a quite good one, thanks again.

2012-07-29 12:45:00 PM

consider this: cicdle: They want people to watch nbc sports channel.....

That would be fine if everybody that had NBC also had NBCSP. Since one is broadcast and the other isn't, that's not the case.

What you're forgetting is that many people who do get NBC Sports Network don't have any idea that they get it, or that it even exists. By putting a more popular sport on NBCSN early on, they're trying to encourage people to go hunting for it, which will hopefully increase viewership of that channel after the Olympics are over.

If all they're going to show is old movies and fishing shows until hockey season, that's not going to increase viewership no matter how much olympics programming they put on it.

They need to snag some more broadcasting rights (I think MLB is up for bidding again fairly soon, maybe they can snag it from Fox and put us out of our misery)

I thought U. of Minnesota ice hockey always had a great idea to combat the problem of corporate season tickets holders who never show up: Rush seating.

You pay a discounted ticket at the gate ($5 or so) and may sit in any unoccupied seat in the building. If the rightful ticket holder shows up, you vacate. You may continue this until everyone shows up, then you move to standing room. Once standing room fills up, you gotta go.

Apparently the British organisers are going to introduce something far more amusing: public naming and shaming of any sponsors who leave an empty block

Make the sponsors desperately scramble to fix this, they created the problem. I expect McDonalds will be handing out free tickets in London branches any hour now.

To tell the truth, half the time, if the point is contested, I have no idea why the point goes to one guy and not the other. I watch for the awesomeness that is the uncontested point.

Also, Sabre is a lot easier to see compared to foil.

Give the French 3rd and anchor legs a lot of credit. Lochte looked a bit tired, but those 2 made up a lot of ground to take the gold. Of course, didn't we do the same thing to them in Beijing?

And the one good thing about the NBC tape delay- I missed Vollmer's WR swim because I logged back on just in time to see her celebrate. So I know to watch that tonight (and Dan Hicks is solid at his job so I don't mind that either).

Handball is freaking awesome. It's like hockey in terms of violent contact, without blades and sticks, but with judo takedowns and no protective gear. And the women are just as nuts as the men.

My husband and I were discussing this the other day. Ya gotta wonder if those badminton players
use their "professional athlete" status as cred to pick up chicks in bars.

Imagine if you will, [insert badminton player's name here] is in a bar, sees a hot chick and starts to
chat her up:

Him: "Can I buy you a drink?"

Her: "That'd be great - thanks! Um...Jack n' Coke, please."

Him: "So...what do you do?"

Her: "Oh, I'm a junior at USC. I'm studying to be a veterinarian because I love children. What do *you* do?"

Him: "I'm training for the Olympics."

Her: "Seriously?"

Him: "For realz."

Her: "So what sport do you play? Soccer? Basketball? Are you a swimmer? A gymnast?"

Him: "Badminton. Or as we in the sport like to call it 'Badass-minton'"

Her: "..."
