Should be noted: We do have a slight motive besides JEEEWWWSS and politics in doing this. The US has a good number of joint research projects with Israel, largely because the test the hell of them a lot better then we do (actual field combat situations).

Once fleshed out and the field bugs worked out, we start using them.

While I always enjoy Romney being upstaged or embarrassed, I must frown upon these shenanigans. Unless of course the President also gave 70 million in aid to the Palestinian people.

In before you know who shows up and explains why Israel needs another 70 million dollars to defend against diy rockets and small arms fire.

Why do we need to give $70 million to another first-world country again?

Moreover, why do we need to give $70 million to another first-world country that tells us to fark off when we ask them politely to stop antagonizing the Arabs?

They don't. We get the research results/final technology as well. This type of thing is more a joint investment then normal aid.

I think you-know-who doesn't come in here anymore. Thank christ.

As others have said, I do wish he was able to spend the $70m on our infrastructure, or at least Palestinians.

DO we have $70 million just lying about for spending like this?

I'd assume this was budgeted well before Mitt went over, I would think the RNC planners know this is out there?

It's awesome when you can use taxpayer money for campaign purposes like that. I'm sure the people happy with this are BIG fans of our cozy relationship with Israel.

"Unfortunately this bill does nothing to address yesterday's evasiveness from the White House on whether President Obama recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, which raised doubt about the president's commitment to our closest ally in the region," said Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg

Geez could you(we) be in their pocket anymore?

Because "we" need to get elected. Bagmen and legbreakers. AIPAC hands out the money and Wolf Blitzer et al break your legs on live TV if you don't play ball.

Dammit, the Republicans have explained this a hundred times. It's okay to give government money to businesses, the military and anyone who will start the End Times. Poor people? The middle class? Fark 'em.

Interesting conundrum, isn't it? But I don't think this move is intended to strengthen Fartfarto's position with Democratic voters.

This aid was part of an ongoing package. Its the timing of the announcement and signing that is suspect. But we all know by this time that Obama has no shame.

Yeah, that 70 million should go to people here.

And due to some sort of mass insanity, that would actually cost Obama votes.

2012-07-28 05:29:37 PM
Politics be damned. That's $70 million that ought to be going to American infrastructure and jobs. Israel is perfectly capable of defending itself, and Romney is perfectly capable of looking bad on his own.

it's about god damned time. the democrats let the republicans define the game and the rules for far too long. back when it was a gentleman's game the big thing was gerrymandering and that was about all. once you had rove and mc cain's black baby, the swift boaters and all that crap it was time to get dirty too.

everyone knows, and has known for years, about the power of the presidency to change the course of the conversation or the news. Obama has recently shown that he not only know how to do that but do it well.

cant' get the dream act? get the republicans to vote against it (an idea they once liked) then announce that you will suspend deportations for students. there have been other things like this. i hope there will be more.

We should pass a law that requires any military aid given to Israel to be matched 1:1 with humanitarian aid for Palestine

1. Someday the anti-missile technology being advanced by this money will save American lives. And you closet 'mites will still get all whiny about it.

2. Ooh, Obama timed an announcement which he was going to do anyway and everyone knew was forthcoming for his political advantage. How dare he? Why doesn't he just hand over the country to his betters like you think he should?

3. You do realize that Romney is quite capable of abandoning large portions of the population to their fate on pragmatic grounds? Bush screwed up the New Otleans disaster response out of stupidity and incompetence. Romney would perform a cost benefit analysis and then do exactly the same thing.

Uhhh... This is actually the only legitimate defense of this money, frankly. This is the big reason the US does these projects with Israel; we also get the finished technology.

We could just as easily do it on our own, we have the largest defense industry in the world.

Personally, I don't think the anti-ballistic missile technology works and that the "successful" tests were faked to keep the money rolling. Besides, if we're ever hit by a nuke it will come in a shipping container.
And Obama just gave the Israelis another treat, two additional carrier battle groups for a total of four, double the normal deployment, so given the Syria situation, we all may be looking at the calm before the October surprise storm. The French, British and Russians are also moving ships into the region.

Some time ago, I was at work and a co-worker was tuned into god damned Dennis Miller. He actually said something like Obama was playing chess to other folks' checkers. He also said that this was a bad thing. I can't remember his rationale except that he thought the world was apparently an exceedingly simplistic place.

True, but Israel has a good reputation for weapons development and innovation. And look at how US arms development goes; 600% over budget and doesn't work after 10 years of farking around. Israel tends to have a LOT less corruption, is more competent, and quicker on fielding weapons systems.

If anything, we should be exporting more of our arms development to them, Norway, Sweden, and South Korea.

Hard to argue about 2 and 3.

About 1, well, without knowing what type of defense system "Iron Dome" actually is (just a better Patriot missile?), I can't say. Since it's a short-range system, it's usefulness to America is doubtful.
