Okay, so age and motivation have caught up with Phelps. Looks like he's going to have a hard time with endurance races. Let's see how he does with short races.

Now, do relay medals count toward his medal count? Is on the relay team this year?

2012-07-28 05:21:08 PM
Clearly, he didn't have enough avocados.

I bet Phelps leaves London without any golds.

As much as I am for 'USA! USA! USA!" I'm glad that this is happening to Phelps. Smoked pot, partied, didn't train hard enough because he thought it was just enough to be him. It would have been a punch in the gut for the other athletes who have sweated, sacrificed and treated their bodies like a temple, if Phelps had won another gold.

The man needed a wake-up call and he is getting one.

IlGreven: Hey, look, everybody! We're writing off yet another champion after one "bad" race!

He almost didn't qualify, so he technically had more than one "bad" race.

I understand that it's too early to say, but I think his demeanor going into the games does seem to indicate that he phoned it in training wise. Although he might be stepping it up big time now, the old cliché that championships (or medals, whatever) are won in the preparation is pretty well anchored in reality.

Lochte was overheard telling Phelps, "Use your 20 condom per day ration after the race, not before it. You dumb shiat."

I mean...the guy's already got a career record that's equaled by the career records of roughly zero people. This isn't to say I disagree with you, but it's not so hard to understand him taking things less seriously. Assuming that's the case.

Good for Lochte, at least he has an entertaining personality. Phelps from some accounts is an aloof jerk.

So Phelps is an asshole for doing something other than training for four years?

Maybe he just didn't feel like it. So what? And before someone gets all "he could give his spot to someone who CARES" he came in fourth. It's not like someone else was going to do better.

While it's difficult to say that no one will ever top what Phelps did in 2008 since records are made to be broken, it's pretty damn unlikely at the same time.

This includes Phelps himself.

Ergo, anything after 2008 was going to be a letdown.

Btw, in the women's 400IM, the chinese swimmer's last 50m split was faster than Lochte's. Hell her last 100m was ridiculous. In the final 50m, she was 2 seconds faster than any other athlete except for the other chinese athlete who finished her last split in what is also a ridiculous 29.77.

I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt but....Jesus. At the end of a grueling IM like that?

I'd like to party with him one time, probably end up hating him by the end of the night, but, if his weed's good, maybe not.

Things Americans aren't allowed:

b. To play with magnets
III. To watch the Olympics live.

I love how everyone is so judgmental as well. It's hard to grasp what Phelps has gone through. He had just turned 15 at the time he made his first appearance at the olympics and was like 23 when it came out that he had smoked from a bong. The horror!

So, yeah, we all know he didn't train as hard this time around. But he's 27 and swimming is all he's ever known. If you gave up most of your childhood to pursue being an olympic athlete and go through the rigors of qualifying for four olympic games, maybe you'd be a little burnt out by your mid-20's, too. That's especially true when you consider that there was really nowhere else to go but down after 2008.

Despite all this, he had a couple of pretty bad races in one of the most grueling swimming events and still managed a fourth place finish.

I sort of want to see him win some golds just as a big "fark you" to the haters.

2012-07-28 07:09:04 PM
Phelps didn't get a medal because he put his 400m IM back in his program eariler this year after vowing not to swim the 400m IM ever gain after Benjing because he was tired of putting his body through the grind.

Bad mistake but to place 4th when throwing the 400m program back in at the last minute is pretty impressive none the less.

Hell of a time to start getting serious. The time to get serious was two years ago. Now it's too late to do anything but go into battle with the body you've got.

According to him, he got serious like three years ago (give or take) but actually missed training days unlike before. He apparently netted roughly half the training time in as anyone else who trained for four straight years without missing a day.

So, I misspoke if I said he didn't prepare at all, but it's all in the context of it being more than a full time job. Even if he put two years of hard work in, that is being ill-prepared by olympic athlete standards.

He made a comment in MAY that he hoped he wasn't too far behind. I wonder if his heart isn't in it or he thought he'd be unbeatable anyway.

You can thank NBC for not thinking the Olympics were something important enough to cover live. Other countries, even with a greater time difference than the US to London, are airing most events live. Hell, we didn't get live events when the games were in farking Vancouver, which is 3 hours behind EST. NBC could air about 85% of the events live (early morning London time would be a problem), but that would cut into daytime programming, and god forbid the biatchy hausfraus in this country can't watch their soap operas or Judge Judy. I watched the Opening Ceremonies last night online (live BBC feed) because I didn't want to deal with the shiatty NBC broadcast, which as people were telling me on Twitter, was MONUMENTALLY shiatty. Commercial breaks, ad nauseum jibber-jabbering from Meredith Viera and Matt Lauer, and cutting away from moments during the show to interview athletes. The BBC had no commercials and very little commentary. I even got an impromptu Geography lesson by watching all 204 countries parade in, some of which I have to admit to never having heard of.

TL;DR --> Cry me a river, build me a bridge, then get the fark over it. Watch the events online if you don't want to deal with NBC's time delay.

2012-07-28 07:25:21 PM
The one saving grace is that there are just so many sports going on that not every single thing can get spoiled for me, so after the key events got seen live, I can just go back and spend the night loading the replays of the less heralded events.

Smoking a bong instead of training won't help the cause

/just for the record I would rather smoke a bong than train
//then again if it meant millions of dollars in future income I might train instead
///wait for the bong later
