And put them where? We've got all the good ports already.

IIRC, Reagan was goin' on about the fear of Russian imperialism. Andropov asked, why, what element on the periodic table are we not already possessed of?

Russia did keep the secret base in Pottsylvania.

There is no naval base! Do not believe them!

Yep, Russian imperialism should be high on our list of concerns. Georgia? Let 'em have it. The Falcons suck.

They need to quit acting like a bunch of Chirkovs.

I bet they could get one in venezuala and Cuba at the very least.

Yeah, one in Cuba would go over real well.

Why should I care about this?

This. Russia has enough nickel, titanium, iron, oil, uranium, tritium, lithium, aluminum, natural gas, etc, that they don't need to be going overseas for any of that stuff. Especially the nickel. They have enough nickel mines to keep them busy making superalloys for the next thousand years or more.

Earlier, a news agency quoted Russia's navy chief as saying that Cuba, Vietnam and the Seychelles were being considered as possible sites.

Have fun with that. Setting up a base in the Seychelles just sounds like committing significant naval resources to help locals shoo away Somali pirates.

All your bases are belong to RUSsia.

The Ruskies appear to still have some commies that want to reminisce about the good ole days.

Russia is friendly with Iran (only god knows why).

The US is friendly with Israel (only G-d knows why).

ISRAEL HATES IRAN.

And we all know that the friend of the enemy of my "friend" is my enemy, right?

RIGHT?

If U.S insists on building a missile shield near Russia and point it at them then Russia should by all mean start building naval bases in any country it can.

2012-07-28 07:17:28 PM
Speaking of ports, when Syria finally kills Bashar al Assad, they say they will remember that the US didn't do more to help them. Well I hope Syria also remembers that Russia and China were the ones that held the US and the EU back from doing more to help them.

That might be useful if Russia can rebuild a serious blue water fleet, which they don't show a whole ton of capability regarding in the near term.

If their desire is to be a counterweight to the US, they'll need bases on this side of the Atlantic. However, as others pointed out, that isn't really a major national security need for them. It's only a deal if they're trying to recapture their glory days.

They can go ahead and build the base, but I don't see it being a real concern for the US anytime soon.

I don't want to be a fear-monger or anything but.... Politicians, regardless of the country they are in, LIE.

On the other hand, I hear that the Chinese missle that was launched off the southern California coast was really just condensation trail from a jet aircraft.

I think the "good ole days" for Russia were pre-Mongol invasion (c. 1230s). It wasn't that great beforehand, and it hasn't improved terribly since.

THIS.

Last I heard, the parts of the Russian navy that hadn't been sold off to India were tied up rusting at the piers in Murmansk.

Russia has always been a crapsack. The reign of Peter the Great was a rare bright spot in their sad history. It's no wonder Russian literature is such a downer.

Man... it's really kind of pathetic. Russia... let it go. You're the 21st century France. You want to be relevant... but that ship's sailed.

I can't argue with either of your points, but the Soviet era was especially shiatty.

Gulags, purges, forced mass-starvation and murders - Stalin alone made Hitler look like a frigging girl scout.

Vodak is the only redeemer.

Russians don't want to live in poor country with weak-ass President (ass.car.jpg, etc), they want to live in poor country with strong-arm President

While I'm sure General Secretary President-for-Life Putin would love world domination, I think that's going to be China's job.

Don't even bother debating with Amos. He's a white trash neo Nazi skinhead. No joke.

He thinks Israel is all powerful and behind everything in foreign policy all over the world, especially America.

It makes him feel better than the truth that America worships radical Islamic states like Saudi Arabia because it would rather have oil than anything else.

The Jews are so powerful they got America to do absolutely nothing to save their friends and family from Nazi death camps. And all the funding of Israel during all 4 of their major wars that never existed.
