From TFA:

She put up a box trap with the dead deer cadaver

1) I believe cadavers are - by definition - dead.

2) 'Carcass' probably would have made more sense here. (I think 'cadaver' refers to a dead human.)

Some dumb people probably think you're supposed to play dead.

/protip: NEVER play dead with an aggressive animal
//but ALWAYS play dead with an aggressive human

If you go camping and/or live in a wild area you should expect to occasionally encounter cougars and other predators and therefore should take sensible precautions. A young man I babysat as a kid was indirectly killed by a cougar a few years ago. He was horseback riding alone and without a helmet, and the cougar attacked his horse while they were crossing a stream. The horse bucked him off, he fell, hit his head, and drowned. They knew it was a cougar because of the pawprints near his body and the scratch marks on the horse. I doubt it would have happened if a second rider had been with him.

Indiana could use a couple dozen mountain lions in our parks to clear out the deer. People in Bloomington talking about how dangerous deer are, how aggressive they can be to their little mop head yappy dogs and petunias but also protesting shooting deer to thin out the population should welcome mountain lions with open arms as a green, humane solution.

The people in the lodge are ok. It's the poor suckers in the tents that are screwed. There is nothing like a thin layer of nice strong nylon to keep you safe. We camp, I worry. We once found bear scat in our campsite.

Jon iz teh kewl: MAC OS X did THIS??

Yes, and you're supposed to stand in line (reaching around the block) all night long in the freezing rain to get a copy of it, made by oppressed suicidal Chinese slaves. And all your friends will admire you for it forever and forever and you'll be cool. At least until next week, when the newer and cooler version of lethal Mountain Lion OS 4Q comes out and hops on your back, snapping your neck bones. Then you'll have to have this one too, to stay cool. But you'll be dead anyway and that's cool enough.

the Tahoe Basin is a wild area where everyone who is visiting or living there needs to be aware of wild animals.

Meh, mountain lions are your least problem at Lake Tahoe.

You're in more danger from the black bears, which are so used to eating at human campsites they're not afraid of people. And since the nice animal lovers won't let them be culled, there are way too many bears for the food supply.

"I was definitely concerned about the horses," she said. "I was the first one to see it on the side of the trail, but didn't know a mountain lion got a hold of it until I got back (to the barn) and I was told there were claw marks on her and tracks on the trail."

WHY?! I just ate a a whole mule deer, what in the hell makes you think it still has room in its gut to eat a whole farking horse? I mean holy shiat how big was this mountain lion? If its bigger than a horse, maybe its time to farking move.

Predators kill as much as they can kill, not as much as they can eat. A well-fed mountain lion that comes across a stable of helpless, confined horses will kill every last one, so it has a supply of meat it can go back to when it gets hungry later (until scavengers steal it all).

/fortunately, even confined, a horse is far from helpless
//I'd be more worried about sheep and goats, not to mention domestic pets
