Arachnophobe: Guntram Shatterhand: Not even August and most of the Republican establishment is washing their hands of their chosen candidate. Romney is self-destructing so quickly that it's hard to imagine he comes out of the convention as a real candidate.

This has been crossing my mind a lot lately. But I'm pretty uneducated in politics and how things like this work. Is it even possible that Romney WON'T be the candidate? Could all this be a flourish to draw our eyes away from what's going to happen? If that's even a possibility, how would that affect the President's reelection campaign?

That would be like saying, "Oh, London won't actually run the Olympics. All that preparation is just to draw your eyes away from having Cardiff host the Olympics. They're having a skunkworks project in building the stadium right now."

I.e., not likely.

That third pic has really disturbing history. ^pops

"The original idea was for a dog to carry a bomb strapped to its body, and reach a specific static target [...] A wooden lever extended out of a pouch to about 20 centimetres (7.9 in) in height. When the dog dived under the tank, the lever struck the bottom of the tank and detonated the charge."

"Another serious training mistake was revealed later; the Soviets used their own diesel-engine tanks to train the dogs rather than German tanks which had gasoline engines.[5] As the dogs relied on their acute sense of smell, the dogs sought out familiar Soviet tanks instead of strange-smelling German tanks."

I feel sorry for the dogs, and while not a fan of the Soviets certainly not a goddamn Nazi fan...

...but the phrase "poetic justice" comes to mind.

Doctor Funkenstein: During the summers when I was in college, I worked as a camp counselor and became good friends with another counselor who was from England. This was nearly twenty years ago. He taught me a phrase I had never heard and, until now, had never found anything vile enough to invoke its use. Mitt Romney is a chiseling twatter.

I tried to Google that.. your post was the 2nd result, then the 1st after I put the two words in quotes.

deadcrickets: That was confirmed again in a new USA Today-Gallup survey, where respondents gave Romney higher marks on every issue that voters say they care most about this year: the economy, jobs, taxes, the deficit. But President Obama crushed Romney - 60 percent to 30 percent - on the question of which of the two was more likeable.

Economy, jobs, taxes, deficit... what pack of completely ignorant imbicils did they poll, who might think Romney would be better on any of those?

Solid Muldoon: Romney is the new Bob Dole. The GOP knows they have no chance this time around, so they serve up a sacrificial lamb. They are playing the long game, angling for 2016.

I think so too, but I wonder why they're pouring so much money on him. Are they hoping for positive results down-ballot, like keeping losses in the house to a minimum?

That, and if they manage to buy and election anyway despite using a one-legged mule against Seabiscuit thanks to Citizen's United and the Conservative media? They'll have proven that the game has changed, and they cannot lose anymore.

He is a total dick and the GOP got what they deserve! They want to play dirty and they got stuck with a laughing stock!! I hope he keeps up the good work and causes the GOP to self destruct!!

Absolutely my favorite Mittens moment ever. Like, how far removed from the rest of humanity do you have to be to think that any black person ever liked "Who Let The Dogs Out"?

The big weapon is the one that somebody mentioned- that he campaigned as an ultra-liberal against Kennedy. Right now, Obama's working on getting people to vote for him. It's when he starts campaigning for conservatives to stay home that Bishop Romney is going to lose points.

The thing about W was that sure he was stupid and a tool, but he could charm the rags off a hobo. You can't see it from TV, but apparently he was amazingly likable to those who met him. W made gaffes because he was dumb. Romney's gaffes are just saying what he believes.

I followed those races pretty closely at the time, being a voter in the Commonwealth and all, and thought he was a pandering douchebag*, but nothing like the sh*t he's been pulling in this race.

* I can't wait for the ads contrasting his "I'll be more liberal on gay rights and abortion than Ted Kennedy" from '94 with all the wingnut BS he's been spewing in this race

Or how about a simple "Governor Romney, how is the Massachusetts health care plan you championed any different from Obamacare?" Eventually, he WILL have to answer that question. And it will be a total train wreck.

Has anybody shopped Mitt's face onto a Karl Pilkington yet?

Meanwhile, the cunning plan to set extremely low expectations for Mitt in the presidential debates is almost complete. It will be pounded home that he's no debater. Then, when he manages to somehow exceed the subterranean expectations, victory will be declared.

That's easy, though. It's a state-level reform and not a federal government takeover.

elchip: PonceAlyosha: He looks forward to meeting Benjamin Nethastfu.

Apparently the two of them have been friends for decades, which is a sharp contrast with Obama and Netanyahu, who really can't stand one another.

I know this was a ways back but...

This right here says everything about who Romney is as a person. Anyone who can be close friends with that oily snake Netanyahu for decades is not someone I trust to make decisions that are good for people.

I'm pretty impressed at the Insult the Daily Mail used. I actually had to go to the dictionary to find out what a "wazzock" is but like all great English insults I knew it was bad just from the way it sounded

Romney is
... an ass
... a pointy-haired boss
... an empty suit
... a psychopath
... a flip-flopper
... a second generation entitled brat.

In short, he is exactly what you'd expect a member of the higher CEO classes to be. An Upper Class Twit.

There's a reason why America has been keeping his social class out of the White House for the last 200 years in favour of the smarter, more skillfull upper middle class twits.

REMEMBER IT. Please!

Zulu_as_Kono: theorellior: Entitled sociopaths generally are.

True.

coco ebert: Perhaps then he doesn't have the requisite skillset for politicking that he has for finance capital.

It seems likely - and he probably doesn't seem so stiff and alien when dealing with fellow titans of industry. Don't forget, he had a long stint at Bain Consulting before he went over Bain Capital.

What I still can't understand is how he can be so mind-bendingly bad at campaigning. He's been running for some sort of major office or another since 1994! I really don't recall him saying so many stupid things in his runs for Senator and Governor.

I'm not sure the 24 hour news cycle was quite as merciless in 1994 as it is today.

deadcrickets: Americans, by an eight-point margin, pick Bush over Kerry as "friendly and likeable" and as "caring and compassionate," and by a seven-point margin as someone who "shares my values and beliefs," an ABCNEWS/Washington Post poll finds.

That was confirmed again in a new USA Today-Gallup survey, where respondents gave Romney higher marks on every issue that voters say they care most about this year: the economy, jobs, taxes, the deficit. But President Obama crushed Romney - 60 percent to 30 percent - on the question of which of the two was more likeable.

But crusty old Bob Dole was surely not considered more likeable than Bill Clinton in 1996. The 1992 Clinton-George H.W. Bush matchup was probably close. But just think back over the elections. The "wooden" Michael Dukakis in 1988 wasn't exactly radiating intense bonhomie. Ronald Reagan was extremely likeable on a personal level to most people. Jimmy Carter had that big smile in 1976. Et cetera.

------------------------------------

No candidate has ever won the Presidency if they were not liked. Period.

Nixon.
