Actually, it seems that it's because a few people got their panties in a butthurt. Notice how not one of them says "I'm going to buy the ENTIRE TOWN a steak dinner!"

Now, I love meat, but Jesus tittyf*cking Christ, it's just a stupid day. EVERY day has a stupid label attached to it. Today is probably dwarf tossing day somewhere.

2012-07-28 07:45:21 AM
I worked at a meat producer when they introduced this idea. We thought it was stupid, but our CIO made one of his best decisions ever and declared it "meetless Monday" as in we wouldn't waste time sitting around in meetings and we would just get our shiat done without pointless interruptions.

large number of families already observing "foodless Wednesday"

That explains why they're dangerously thin.

Republicans: That kid in the grocery store who screams and wails like he's being tortured till he gets what he wants.

Democrats: The parents who give it to him, thus teaching him to do it again and again and again.

I want the Obama administration to declare "Don't Swallow Drain-O Tuesday" to see some of these Republican idiots tweeting about how they're gonna go swallow a whole bottle full of Drain-O.

Or maybe "Don't Take Cyanide Thursday."

You know, guys. Just because the government recommends something, you're not obligated to do it.

Like, they could recommend that everyone born on my birthday dye their hair pink and have sex with David Lee Roth, but I'm not actually obligated to dye my hair or make sweet, sweet love to that hair rock god.

In an even more inefficient use of food, most of our corn gets fed to livestock. This is one reason why meatless days makes good sense. If we fed ourselves unstead of our cattle we'd be healthier and could feed more people.

Feed more people sure, but why would it be healthier? Corn isn't a complete protein and you are better off having a varied diet.

Do I have to choose between them? Can't I have them all at different times?

We almost never eat steak, but I have a black bean taco recipe that puts any nasty ground beef version to shame. We go meatless several time a week and still enjoy the sweet, sweet bacon on other days.

The combination of the second great republican depression, the innate lameness of capitalism and the economic incompetence of Obama and the dems in dealing with that depression ( as opposed to the competence of FDR and the dems of that period ) is doing just fine when it comes to slashing demand and killing off businesses. No help is needed.

That's what always annoys me most about these stories, the kneejerk "FARTBONGO IS FOR IT SO I'M AGAINST IT' reactions. The Republican Party has ceased to have any sort of coherent political belief system beyond that now.

Ha, that's how I am too. The burger doesn't need to be insanely huge -- just made well with a nice sear so it's got those crunchy crumblies on the edges.

Then basically make a salad on top of it w/ a good slice of tomato, leaf lettuce, onion and mayo.

Absolutely. I no longer eat meat that came from a factory farm. There's just no point. Health, workers' safety, environmental impact, animal welfare...etc.
Plus, when I do eat animal products now it's more of a treat and it tastes so much better.

Don't know about you, but generally the "ZOMG tyranny" types upset at the very suggestion that red meat should be eaten sparingly are the same who want to cram a religion (of which they remain largely ignorant) down everyone's throat.

Also they want to blare "AMERICAN EXCEPIONALISM" through global bullhorns and Hellfire missiles.

Ah, meatless Monday. An idiotic policy by urban vegetarian/vegan crusaders that don't have the first clue about an actual healthy and sustainable food supply. Eating ruminants (all of them, meat, bones, organs, blood) is by far the healthiest and most sustainable way to feed yourself. Nothing is more efficient on converting solar energy into human edible nutrients than a grazer. Buy an entire local, grass-fed cow, learn how to butcher and cook it, and profit.

Eating Animals is a shallow, terrible book full of vegan propaganda and misinformation. Agriculture is more destructive than grazing, entire ecosystems are obliterated to grow "vegetarian" food.

Much better book:

/Avoid factory farming of any kind, plant or animal.

Interesting. I liked that Eating Animals exposed the horrors of factory farming. I didn't like his asides and personal opinions/beliefs. It didn't make me want to become a vegetarian or a vegan, it made me want to avoid factory farms at all costs.
I will check out this book. Haven't heard of it, and hadn't really thought about the impact.
