Baek Seung Joo, a senior researcher at the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses in Seoul, said the leaflets drops are likely the work of a military or government agency trying to demonstrate its loyalty to the new dictator.

"Sending the leaflets is about the North's internal politics," he said. "South Korea's minds won't be changed by them. It's for the survival of some North Korean agency.

I find that the most believable answer.

they are trolling South Koreans.

Oddly enough I've read news stories about NK sympathizers within SK. I don't get it. NK is the worst country in the world IMO. I'm sure Kim would just say I was brainwashed.

Don't forget that North and South Korea are both "Korea" and both, in general, want to be reunited. They not only share a common history, but a common people -- there are families who are split across the border. Each country's populace hates the other's government, but feels love and sympathy for the other's people.

/generalizing wildly here, of course

Communism is sad. However, if the Orientals didn't aquire such a collective mindset to begin with, then perhaps lofting off freedom baloons wouldn't be such a big issue. Individualism and a well armed society will always prevail.

USA! USA! USA!

i don't think either side actually HATES the other government. they just ACT like they do so they don't get killed by their respective regime

Best Korea's leader is weakening. This time they sent the message with balloons, not missiles.

Oh, I suspect they do. It seems like many Americans hate the North Korean government, and South Korean culture is, these days, not so dissimilar to American culture that they couldn't do the same. Besides which, Russia and the U.S. farked up the formation of those two countries' mightily, in terms of who we picked to rule them.

South Korea is the only country that practiced properly implemented Keynesian stimulus spending ( spending really big ) during the second great republican depression. As a result their economy is doing amazingly well. If you are a con you want to make sure their Keynesian success gets very little exposure so that you can continue to lie about Keynesianism not working.

Better to demonstrate your loyalty than to have you, your parents and your children sent to a political labor camp

Sorry Pippi..just realized what you meant. Not nit picking, but should have been a comma before "other than Americans" to make it more clear. LOL

Looks a little nicer when the trees have leaves.
Still, pretty creepy in light of what happened there.

When you're talking about a country with thousands of years of history, 60 years is nothing.

I dunno, once you factor in the cost of having to buy a computer, the balloons were probably cheaper.

It's a bit more complicated than that which, I'm sure, you realise. There are families that are divided and they have to live in the knowledge that maybe their kin are not alive anymore - horrible. The Koreans I live amongst are 'Korean', there is no 'South Korea' only 'Korea' and 'North Korea'. Also they don't like to talk about them but are keenly aware of the danger. I live about 10 miles from the DMZ and my colleagues worry about working so close to 'them' and live as far away as possible, commuting an hour each way every day. I love it here; it's clean, beautiful and uncrowded. I've visited the guards at the border several times and that was fun.

Dictatorships are often rife with internal feuding and shallow displays of loyalty. I bet if the South Korean army rolled in and smashed North Korea, all of Kim's loyal minions would be falling over themselves to aid the invaders.
