In a deep sea fishing rodeo, you have to hold your breath during the underwater Bull Shark ride.

I married into a family of fishing rodeo champs, and I still don't get it.

"..We've had anglers catch live sharks in fresh water lakes and rivers, but with all the locks they'd have to go through to get up there it's unlikely."

What I got out of the story is that this lake Guntersville is not a lake, its a reservoir on some river. Looking at the map seems to confirm this theory.

Why all the hubub, bub?

It's hard as hell to get those clown fish to hop out of barrels and distract the Bullsharks so riders get away.

There is a rodeo off the coast of Louisiana this weekend. We were trying to take a charter tuna fishing but they were all blocked for the rodeo.

Errr, bullsharks aren't the only known shark species that can navigate both freshwater and saltwater.

They're the only saltwater shark known to be able to live permanently in either freshwater or saltwater conditions, though they must reproduce in either brackish or marine. In the U.S. they are the only shark altogether than can live for extended periods or permanently in freshwater, but there are still other species that will travel into freshwater tributaries for shorter periods of time.

In other parts of the world there are species called River Sharks that are thought to be freshwater sharks, since they mainly live in freshwater, some species have only ever been found in freshwater, and are known to reproduce in freshwater. Some of these species can however tolerate brackish and marine conditions.
There is still some debate as to whether these are true freshwater sharks though, since they are rare, mostly endangered, therefore have not been studied extensively.

Are you kidding? There's nothing more entertaining than killing a bunch of animals who don't have a chance against us. How else would rednecks shore up their self-esteem? They already have a bunch of guns!

Eh, rattlers aren't a big deal once you have them in hand. They strike quick, but they're predictable, and they're not as strong as a big python or boa, so you just make sure they don't have the room to strike by grabbing them right behind the head. I''ve grabbed big diamondbacks barehanded before, you just have to avoid the pits and being seen to do it.

Or you just pin 'em to the ground with a forked stick and take off the head with a knife, then skin 'em and throw them on the grill, maybe sell the skin to a redneck if they're in good condition, I've been saving them though since I want to eventually make a jacket. Either way, they're farking delicious and have some nice skins.

I have a serious phobia towards sharks though, to the point I have to have someone hold a swell or leopard if I pull one up so I can kill it, regardless of the size. My friends think it's hilarious, since I'll free-dive deep as hell for abalone or scallop but all it takes is seeing a 16" swell shark and I'm out of the water and cussing the day I was born. 36" barracuda? Gonna catch a knife in the spine if it gets too close(and they have, don't miss the first hit because they'll bite the shiat out of you and that hurts like a bastard. I imagine most people tangling with a barracuda would end up in the hospital if they missed the first hit, but I'm comfortable and dangerous underwater as long as I have a knife), baby shark? I'm out of the water like I ran into a demon.

It's not rational at all, I just hate sharks. Swell shark are the only animals I'll kill just for being stupid enough to bite my line and getting hauled up, I'll do my damndest to make sure an undersized rock cod or perch goes back in the water safely, but if I pull any kind of shark I'll kill it regardless of if it's edible or legal sized or not. Is a swell or thresher more dangerous than a 'cuda? Not really, but they'll scare me out of the water a lot quicker(anyone stupid enough to stay in the water with an actual school of barracuda around deserves what they get).

If I ever see a Great White in my diving spots(a woman around here was killed by one when I was in high school, I ran into a juvenile once and refuse to dive therenow) I'll probably never dive there again. The only time I've ever pissed my pants in fear(luckily, underwater) was diving for urchin and realizing there was a 10'(probably bigger, I panic when I see shark so I estimated conservatively) thresher circling above me, which shouldn't be an issue. I can stick a knife in the spine of one, twist it, kill it really quick if it gets aggressive(and they're delicious), but I feel like an intruder when I see a shark in the water. In the ocean, you're no longer an apex predator, especially if you're free diving in a pair of shorts with just a big ass knife, you're at the mercy of anything bigger than you that you can't kill immediately. Oddly, sharks tend to keep their distance from divers though, I've got scars from big rock cod and barracuda and flatfish(oh lordy, flatfish, killing a halibut, scullion, or bat ray under water is ridiculously hard and dangerous, but worth it if you make the stroke, just let the knife go if they run and are over 24" and get away, or you're in for a ride most people can't handle), but I've never had a shark attack me, even if I pulled it on a line. They just scare me for some damn reason.

Bulls really scare me, they're not even around here but prevent me from diving in rivers and estuaries. I'd rather tangle with a half dozen barracuda than a bull shark, they're notoriously aggressive and don't mind freshwater. That doesn't look like a bull though, I'm inclined to agree it's a finetooth. Bulls have nasty farking teeth, not a Mako, but nasty enough.

/going out for abalone at a local beach in two days.
//really hope there's no shark.
///I may be a puss for getting scared of shark, but no one else I fish with has the balls to dive in kelp beds and rock reefs during a rough tide for shellfish, so that has to count for something.

I am on the Board of Directors for the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo. We are the largest salt water fishing tournament in the world (verified by Guinness World Records in 2011). You can get more information about the event at www.adsfr.com.
