Florida is currently embroiled in a controversy surrounding Gov. Rick Scott's (R) voter purge program, which disproportionately affects voters of color. Fifty-eight percent of Scott's original list of voters who were supposedly ineligible to voter were Hispanic while Hispanics make up only 13 percent of Florida's eligible voters. Greer and the GOP cut ties in 2010, and he is currently facing felony corruption charges

I might respect the Deep South if they actually flatly stated they wanted an oligarchical society based on race and class. At that point, an honest discussion about the fate of our nation can begin. They want one thing, the North, Midwest and Left coast want something opposite.

Does damage his credibility pretty seriously.

The notion of the DOJ giving him a plea bargain in exchange for his testimony about criminal conspiracy by the img1.fark.net State GOP to violate civil rights does make for a pleasant daydream. Not gonna happen, though.

So we send our troops all over the world to spread and defend democracy. Their primary means of doing so is killing lots of people who stand in their way.

The GOP is standing in the way of democracy. Therefore, we should send the troops in to kill lots of GOP people.

IT ALL MAKES SENSE.

people don't feel that voting matters. they look at the gobs of cash it takes just to get elected, and they ask themselves 'how can I compete in that sort of game?' so they don't even bother. they just go and live their lives and hope that this year wont be TOO bad for 'em.

Do you genuinely believe that there aren't a ton of Midwest people, non-coastal Californians, and teabagging upstate New Yorkers who don't want the same thing? I appreciate what you're saying, but the idea that bigotry and the scapegoating of poor people is relegated to the South really irritates me. While the electoral map doesn't lie, many of those blue areas aren't overwhelmingly so. Conversely, many red areas of the South approach fairly equal libtard/wingnut saturation.

How about no. Don't trust a Florida politician farther than you can throw them. They have no real opposition from the Democratic party, so the only way you can tell a Republican in Florida might be telling the truth is when what they say makes another Republican look bad. Even then, often lying/half truth.

In all likelihood, Greer may have been present when someone made an ill-advised joke about voter suppression.

I'm told we once had a media that considered issues like these worth investigating and reporting. I guess the blatant attempts to disenfranchise voters wasn't real enough to bump those 7 hours devoted to Donald Trump whenever he throws a birther tantrum. 'Cos that's real news, son.

For the sake of argument, let's say that's the case and that this story lacks teeth. Whatshisface in PA actually came out and said that Romney can take the state thanks to voter ID. And you don't even need to hear them say it...just look at their actions, and the sudden motivation to address a problem that, presumably, has always been there.

I think there is a difference between a libertarian philosophy that permeates the West, (non coastal California is part of that) and large swaths of the midwest and rural parts of NY down through Kentucky, and the authoritarian viewpoints of further south and east.

I don't view New Orleans as part of the Deep South. They are more mixed in their culture and open in their view.

True, north-versus-south isn't the only factor. There's also urban-verus-rural, religious-versus-secular, and very much young-versus-old. And even then, it's a distribution; look hard enough, and you can probably find an old rural southern bible-thumping middle-class-or-higher straight white male who's rabidly against discrimination on race, class, and sexual orientation.

However, there are major trends on those lines; and finding two would be a bigger challenge.

Dante87336: Why don't we just start the second Civil War already? Might as well since the South seems to want to back to the good ole days of the 1850s.

As dickfreckle noted, it's not really "the South" anymore. The South successfully exported much of its evil around the country; the division is now much more urban/rural. Snohomish County in Washington and, say, Montgomery County in North Carolina have more to do with each other than they do Seattle and Charlotte, respectively.

Obviously this guy has a bone to pick with the GOP, but does that automatically make what he claims untrue? Is there any physical evidence to back up his claims?

I know that the GOP actively tries to suppress the vote. I know because they tried to suppress my vote in the 2004 election. I think they called them "vote challenges" or something like that, but it was essentially a sleazy Republican lawyer (I asked who he was representing) that contested my right to vote. He did not stop me from voting, however and I did my very best to embarrass the hell out of him in front of everyone. I think I succeeded pretty well at that... assholes.

I think he picked me out because he thought I looked "liberal" or something, I don't really know, I didn't bother to ask why he was challenging my right to vote. Doesn't really matter anyway, whatever excuse he had would have been equally bullshiat.

So based on my own personal experience with the GOP and voter suppression attempts, his claim doesn't strike me as particularly far fetched. I'm not saying it's accurate or not... just saying that it can and does happen and that I've personally experienced them engaging in that kind of pathetic behavior.

You ever think, maybe, just maybe, the leadership of the Republican party has filled up with white supremacists and won't consider aligning themselves with Latinos because they hate them to the point that it trumps politics? I've slowly come around to that conclusion.

You have missed the beauty part to these new voter supression laws - nothing CAN be done about them until they are invoked during the election. During the election, it is inevitable that some number of citizens who are legitimately eligible to vote will be prevented from doing so. They will sue, go to court, and the laws will be thrown out, as they are all illegal under long settled law.
But by then, it will be too late - assuming the tactic is successful.
They are actually doing this whole thing in the hopes of stealing one, single election. Crazy.

Yeah, I'd like to know in detail too. If I went to vote and I had my card and my name was on the roll and some asshole in a suit was saying "hold up" you bet I would be making one HELL of a scene. Either I would be casting my vote or the cops would be dragging me away in handcuffs.

When will someone on your national stage stand up, on television, and say 'Across our nation the organisation of the Republican party is, behind the wholly false mask of preventing fraud, engaged in the greatest effort to suppress the votes of minorities and the poor in our history. We must stand up and say no. The people of the country must not allow their votes to be stolen, their democracy subverted.
