Is the cross there as a symbol or is it a cross that's actually part of the skyline?

This, my dear atheist friends, is why the Bible Thumpers all think we are out to steal their jeebus. WTF is so hard about picking the meaningful battles and letting the stupid, piddling, pointless and utter meaningless things like this go by?

To be fair, Stuebenville doesn't have much of a skyline.

FTA:

But officials at Franciscan University of Steubenville told Fox News the chapel and cross were included in the logo because the school is one of the top employers in the area and one of the most recognized entities in the city.

Apparently some atheists do not embrace reality. Get over it. There are Christians in the US. It's part of our history and our culture.

I'm usually all athier-than-thou...but, this is just stupid.

The logo was not an endorsement of religion.

They always trot out this strawman. Which is funny as it only has one word wrong. Here is the correct version:

"This is an amazing attempt by a small group of people to try to eradicate God and any reference to religion from our government"

/if only their religion preached something about telling the truth

Exactly. As an atheist I just don't give a shiat about stuff like this. Why make a big stink out of this. Unfortunately we just have to understand that we are a very small minority compared to religious folks so we have to accept that religious symbols are going to appear in our society. The best strategy is to just keep educating and let people come to their own decisions. When it comes to religion, people have to go with what the believe is correct and the more you attack their belief, the more you reinforce that belief.

Thank you and eraser8 for showing some common sense. The logo clearly was one of highlighting businesses and recognizable landmarks in the area.

Moderation and common sense needs to prevail on both sides. The Freedom From Religion Foundation has turned into PETA--a group that may have had a real beef years ago, but has now degenerated into a clan of weirdos getting fringier and fringier.

FTA: "All citizens, whether Christian, Jewish, atheist or agnostic, Muslim, etc. - must be welcomed as full participants, and the only way to do that is to keep religion out of government."

I totally agree with this ^ , but the Freedom From Religion Foundation group really comes up with some stupid shiat. One person doesn't like something.... lawsuit.

Maybe try to educate the sheeples that there are other religions, beliefs, etc in the world instead of just suing everyone for the sake of suing.

Making a gov't logo promoting religion is a helluva lot different than having your cities major employers on it. Maybe the atheists could make their own little symbol and have it added to everything? Making a city spend the money to change a perfectly good logo is just hurting the residents who will have to make up that lost money.

So if a Freedom From Religion Foundation person has a Heart Attack at one of their rally's or whatever, and the nearest hospital is like Catholic Memorial or Methodist General, do they opt to die as a show of their dedication to the cause rather then go there, or screw principles for the reality of the situation and try to live another day??

When the official seal of the city emphasizes religious iconography then one has a problem. I sincerely doubt that the actual view of the building from that vantage point has a cross that's so massively visible in the skyline. Assuming that's true, then they intentionally over-emphasized the cross, and it's no longer just a feature of the background that happens to be there, it's an endorsement.

Just about the only city I could think of that I would accept some kind of religious symbol would be for Boston, given the history of the revolution and the use of lanterns as semaphore in the church tower. For them I would tolerate the church/tower, and that's it. Even then, the point would be for the lanterns in the tall tower, not for the cross on the top.

It's atop the Franciscan University chapel. This is just asinine. But then atheists can be just as whacked as the religious people they so love to hate.

They are trying to get the WWII memorial on a mountain in Montana down as well, because it is a big Jesus statue.
I work at the local Christian radio station, which is funny because I am anything but, and all of the pastors talk about it as a "war on Jesus". I think, as others pointed out earlier, that they are misconstruing the real "victim" which is the govt. Not Jesus, not Moses, not Adam, but the Govt. Separation of church and state is necessary and vital to a country that formed for religious freedom. When you have many different religions, you have to throw out religious beliefs to be able to govern as a whole. We cant have some laws applying to Christians, other laws applying to Muslims, etc.

/Don't get me started on the hypocritical Constitution argument. Freedom of religion means every religion and not just yours

1. Just airbrush the cross out. Why was this not even suggested? If it was suggested, as painfully obvious as that idea is, why didn't the author of TFA mention it?
2. The FFRF works much like the NRA does - any encroachment on their territory (any attempts to enact sensible gun policy or any intrusion/suggestion of religion by a government body or official) must be stopped, no matter how silly the fight appears to everyone else.
3. Couldn't they have gotten the Ohio branch of FFRF to do something? Being an out-of-state concern really doesn't fly well when you're messing with the locals' turf.

It's a composite view of recognizable buildings in the skyline. Without the cross, it's not the same building. The city shouldn't have caved to these assholes.

This is what the building looks like. Presumably, the next step is demanding it's demolition since it's visible from public land.

True, that's all the skyline Steubenville really has. If anything it's better than the real one.

As for the new logo, that's Link, one of the forts built to protect the surveyors and first settlers into the Ohio territory.

The cross is part of the building. But while we're at it, we also need to make the following changes:

Can't use blue: Buddhism
The sun has to go: Shinto; Christianity
So does the bridge: Shinto
