So the moral of this story is "Greece now has a lot of half-price prostitutes and you'll be fine if you use a condom"

While I do understand that these women have tragic lives already, the fact is that they are actively killing people or at least ruining lives. Sure, at some level the johns deserve that but then they infect their wives who infect their kids, etc. Contagious epidemics are one of those things where there are scenarios where some rights of the infected have to be taken away. Of course HIV is a tricky one because the spread is tied so closely to "immoral" behavior. But they do need to be identified (many may not even know they have it) and they need to be prevented from spreading it further. Ideally it is humane, but basically if these women (and men!) are going to return to the street they need to be stopped.

When I was working in hospitals putting myself through university (long time ago when you could still do that) ...

.... every diagnosis of sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea and syphilis were reported by physicians to the Department of Public Health. That Department then sent investigators to the infected patient and obtained full background, including everyone they'd had sex with. This was the Law and determined to be in the public interest just as sanitation and vaccinations are today.

Then came HIV.

And a powerful political lobby that blasted anyone who dared ask "who have you been having sexual encounters with?" following the same logic as the Law that had public health in mind and worked well for many decades.

The result?

AIDS became politically protected, off limits to investigation and How Dare You? question my sexual habits?

I guess there's no question of arresting all the HIV+ gays and publishing their pictures because it's Greece so everybody "goes Greek."

It's my understanding that the rate of transmission from female to male is quite low. While male to female is higher. As a man if you use a condom with a woman, you should be pretty safe from HIV. I guess the only other risk is if the greek prostitute speaks greek. If you know what I mean. *wink*

Requiring prostitutes to have a license that is contingent on passing regular STD checks is better than the system we have in the USA.

I'm not on board with arresting the positives though.

When I was in the Philippines back in the 90s all of the prostitutes had to have a card which they could only get if they were STD free in order to work in the bars and it was a pretty good system. Everyone knew that they ladies in the bars were clean so that is where you picked up your lady so there was no street walkers which kept everything discrete. I never took part in the sex, but I did pay the bar fine a few times in order to have someone to take me around the city. Paying for sex and Asian are a turn off for me, but the company is nice. I think America would be a lot better off if it had the same type of system, though I doubt many would be able to pay a bar fine for a whole night so and hourly rate would have to be setup.

It's true you don't see many Greek women. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they are often mistaken for Greek men. And this in turn has given rise to the belief that there are no Greek women, and that Greeks just spring out of holes in the ground! Which is, of course, ridiculous.

Don't forget that part of this was because people were dying by the truck load every day from AIDS related complications. Very few people die of other STDs. Not to mention, the fear, ignorance and stigma that the uneducated had about HIV, burning people out of their homes, ex-communicating, barring infected hemophiliacs from school etc.

You can't expect to have the government protect positive people from other people when the very same perpetrators were government officials, police/first responders, teachers, service workers, etc.

Also, many states have PNL - Partner Notification Laws where if you do test positive they contact your sexual partners and tell them to come in for testing, without revealing your identity.

I've always thought that there should be an open, public, searchable AIDS database. You get AIDS, you don't get to have sex anymore - Unless it's with your hand, or another AIDS patient. No, you cant has sex, not yours.

Problem: Social program cuts/drug use cause astonishing rise in new HIV infections.

Uhh, what social program is it that is causing HIV infections to rise. Are the Greeks soooo dependent on the gov't that they are unable to have sex w/out condoms unless the gov't provides them? Could it be, maybe that since there are so many more people unemployed that they don't have anyhting better to do than bump dirties? More sex = a higher spread of disease? fark it, lets just say it's because they are cutting social programs and call it a day

"I know what they were doing on the streets," she says. "I know what kind of people they had sex with, and that they never used condoms."

Prostitution is only legal in licensed brothels, where sex workers are required to get regular health checks. Most of the 15,000 prostitutes in Greece work here illegally, mainly on the streets of central Athens, says Eleni Kakalou, a doctor who specializes in infectious diseases and treats people with HIV.

"And prices for commercial sex work have gone dramatically down," especially when addicts are using sex to pay for a fix, Kakalou says. "They say they would have sex for 5 euros ($6). I've even heard 2."

Earlier this spring, ostensibly as a pre-election crackdown on crime, police arrested 17 women with HIV who allegedly worked illegally as prostitutes. The names and photos of some of the women were posted on the police website.

Kakalou says Greek authorities received more than 4,000 calls - mostly from middle-aged men with families who said they had unprotected sex with the women.

B-b-b-b-b-but responsible adults should be free to engage in any activity they want to as long as they're both consenting and they're not hurting anyone else. After all, they're responsible adults!

They can all die responsible, consenting deaths covered in boils.

The Jami Turman Fan Club: The last people working in the private sector in Greece just lost their jobs..

Nothing about the headline is inconsistent with Socialism. You dont own your health anymore, the government manages it for you, and the easiest way to eliminate a disease is to remove the carriers. It always confuses me that Homosexuals are not Libertarians after the media attempts in the 80's to make AIDS a homosexual disease. Its like the religious right pigeon holes them and then the left lays the foundation for rounding up at risk populations for wholesale testing..... though they wont actually be rounded up for testing, because the government now owns your medical records, so they can just come to your house and take you to the camps at any time.

I would have, but it is kind of hard to without the desire back then I had a thing about paying for it which killed the desire. It hasn't been until my late 30s that I stopped caring about paying for it though I haven't yet I think I wouldn't have a problem with it.
