Neil Reed said that Knight choked him, and Knight denied it, calling him a liar. Then the video of it came out. This infuriated then Indiana University president Myles Brand so much that he issued the "zero tolerance" for misbehavior, which Knight broke before the year was out. Reed didn't finish his college career at Indiana, he transferred to Southern Mississippi for his final year after his Indiana teammates voted him off the team. This sounds like the guy was a jerk, but it turns out that Neil Reed was a real good guy. Link A massive heart attack at 36---he must have really chunked up.

Another college athletic program that should be gutted. This shiat is out of hand.

Bob Knight is a chickenshiat and a bully, and I hope when they bury him upside down (so his critics can all kiss his ass), he's still alive when they do it.

Been a while since the words "Bob Knight" and "choke" were in a story that wasn't about the tournament.

You don't have to be fat to die suddenly of a heart attack while relatively young. It happens all the time to fit people.

My dad went to high school with Bobby Knight said he was pretty much the same back then as well

Did you miss the Kelvin Sampson debacle and fall out? The program was gutted. Last year was the first time since 2008.

All choking/Knight jokes aside, this dude was only 36. What's with all these athletes dying so soon? Some guy from Stanford's Final Four team in '98 died recently, too.

Bobby Knight will be charged with involuntary manslaughter for this death.

The direct correlation is obvious.

Yeah, talk about a program that got exactly what it deserved. Hire a guy who put a major program under investigation, and whaddaya know? He was calling recruits again!

That wasn't a "choke", but proof that Bobby Knight had learned "Pei Mei's ten-point finger exploding heart-technique" . It leaves not a mark on you, but 15 years later..Blammo!

There's a lot of athletes. I'd say they aren't really dying at a higher rate than the general population, you just hear about it more when they're college athletes.

Read the comments in the article. One of his former IU teammates, Charlie Miller, is claiming that he never was voted off of the team by his teammates, and that he decided to leave on his own. Which makes sense, I wouldn't want to play for a guy that choked me for making a mistake. He is saying that the story of him being voted off was made up. Pretty interesting that the school and Knight might have floated a story of his teammates kicking him off the team to damage his credibility.

Dumbest hire in the history of IU athletics.

That guy was ALMOST as sleazy as Calipari.

It may be interesting, but it's a fact. He left the school on his own...the "vote" rumor was put to bed a long time ago.

Granted, I never faulted Reed...I would have left the school as well...after I picked up a chair and knocked Knight TFO.

And please know, I'm not one of those sheeple IU grads who thinks Knight walks on water. Yes, he was a world class basketball coach, perhaps one of the best of all time and yes he got his kids to graduate and he ran a clean program, but the guy was a world class asshole who routinely did things that in the "real world" would have/should have gotten him fired or arrested.

On the one hand, you shouldn't choke your players. On the other hand, sometimes 19 or 20-year-olds really need a good strangling and/or b*tchslap.

There is also this article Link about the incident, which details exactly what kind of hell Reed was put through by Knight, Knight's buddies in the media, and his Indiana teammates. There were three years between the time that Knight ran Reed off and when the tape came out proving Reed correct.

Reed transferred from Indiana in 1997, citing differences with Knight. Reed was just the latest in a rash of highly recruited players to transfer from Indiana that continued with stars Jason Collier and Luke Recker. I remember reading a transcript of an ESPN radio interview shortly after Reed's transfer between Reed and Knight crony and broadcaster Digger Phelps. Phelps embarrassed Reed in the interview, scolding him for not taking Knight's abuse like a man, for quitting so easily and, then, questioned whether Reed really was much of a man at all.

The incident died down until last spring when Reed went public with accusations that Knight had physically abused him. Indiana University immediately called a shameful press conference in which former and current players defended Knight and openly disparaged and questioned Reed's credibility. They questioned the toughness of Reed, a kid who played half a season with his arm in a sling after suffering a separated shoulder. Reed was called a liar, a baby, a quitter, and it was revealed that Reed hadn't left on his own accord but rather after a humiliating vote by his teammates to remove him (at Knight's directive, it was later learned).

Lucky for us, Knight's temper again betrayed him. A fired assistant, who claims Knight assaulted him, released a practice tape which shows Knight approaching Reed on the basketball floor, grasping his neck, and Reed's head reactively snapping backward. Standing just six feet from Reed is A.J. Guyton, a player who just days before had stood at the press conference and called Reed a liar.

Really, that counts as "hell"?

Knight came up via the military back in the day. That sh*t wouldn't even get you looked at sideways at that point. Hell, drill instructors weren't allowed to touch recruits by the time I went and occasionally there were still incidents that no one reported. Mostly because the people who got touched were complete f*ckups who were lucky not to have been blanket partied.

Also, you don't choke a dude with 2-3 seconds of one hand grab unless you break something, which didn't happen.

I mean it's still wrong, but again, stop overinflating everything to levels way worse than it is, you f*cking drama queens.

IAmRight ; Really, that counts as "hell"?

Run out of your school in your senior year by your coach telling his players to vote you off to cover his ass. Openly called a liar by lying teammates. Being called a pussy on national TV. And having the entire world think that it's true for three years.
Aye, that is a living nightmare.

You are going to defend a man who kicked his own son on national T.V? A man who after being told to keep his
hands off of people couldn't even do that and the final straw that led to him being fired was him grabbing a regular student because he didn't like the way the student greeted him.

Yeah, that part sucks. On the bright side, it happened a while ago and it's not like 99.9% of people knew who the hell he was anyway.

Perhaps you, like so many others, don't understand the difference between "that event was not all it's made out to be" and "that dude is a saint!"

There's a LOT of area between the two statements.

What the WTF. Indiana men's basketball was some kind of reality TV show? I guess he should have made better alliances.

Ah yes, good ole Bobby Knight. A relic of a bygone era who stayed past his best if used by date. Firing Knight cost Myles Brand his job. When I saw the reactions of the PSU crowd to the Sandusky thing which turned into a Paterno thing, the cult of Knight was the first thing to pop into my head. The wounds that man caused IU still fester in certain circles, both for and against him. I know of alumni who quietly cheered when Brand passed away from cancer because of it.

Once a coach cult is in place it is a rot that destroys the community when the coach makes headlines for all the wrong reasons. If it was not the case why are we discussing it here on Fark so long afterwards?

You know Myles Brand didn't lose his job at IU right? It was just his stepping stone to being president of the NCAA. He left voluntarily.

Of course Bobby Knight is a nut job and it came as no surprise to hear that he had physically attacked a player. I was most appalled when Reed was interviewed about it on ESPN and scumbag Digger Phelps spent the entire time telling the kid to come clean and admit he was a liar who made the whole thing up because he couldn't live up to his advance billing as a player. Always knew Bobby Knight sucked, was surprised to learn Digger Phelps is a complete piece of shiat.

Are we talking about the same Myles Brand that completely defanged the NCAA?
