Great, so we won't hear about the outcome of this lawsuit for 14 years.

FirstNationalBastard: Great, so we won't hear about the outcome of this lawsuit for 14 years.

Well, an assistant DA could stumble into the lawsuit one evening and tell his boss about it, but yeah, probably still 14 years.

WE ARE. GETTING SUED.

IANAL, but I strongly suspect this will settle quickly.

The only question is how many zeroes are on the check.

that might still happen. yanking state and federal funding could still happen under the Cleary act. I doubt Corbitt will want to be known as the man who destroyed Penn State though, so I suspect he will 'merely' hit them with a large fine.

There is info out there about payments in similar cases in the Catholic Church, but the Church, though wealthy, does not have pockets as deep as a state's. By the time the victims are through with Penn State, the $60M NCAA fine is going to look like a drop in the bucket.

One can only hope. Because 60mil spread out over 5 years isn't all that punitive for a school that takes in so much.

Naw. There's well established precedents for civil awards of this type. They'll certainly pay out a large sum but the 'hundreds of millions' I've heard bandied about just ain't gonna happen.

I wouldn't be surprised if Penn State or its alumni hold fundraisers to help cover the costs of these potential lawsuits.

Clearly, this rape victim is just jealous of all the games Penn State has won.

This may just be the tip of the iceberg. Two other professors at PSU, who had nothing to do w/football, Lasaga and Neisworth also abused children. If Sandusky's victims succeed, those victims (and victims of faculty we don't even know about yet) may come out of the woodwork. The school simply has no credibility.

Yeah, I don't think any of the PSU lawsuits will ever reach a courtroom.

The ones against the Paterno estate probably will, however, on account of Jay being a militant hardass.

It depends on if the school knew about it and didn't report it.
That's what hung em on Sandusky. Not the crime, but the cover up. If Paterno or one of the higher ups had called the cops the day they found out, Penn State wouldn't be facing anything close to the shiatstorm that's about to hit.

Good. The big dollar signs should do a lot to draw out victims of other untouchable college sports programs.

Penn State is not alone in this. The NCAA punished PSU as lightly as they did so as not to set a precedent. This week, Penn State, next week? It's coming.

I was referring to the total payout, not individual ones. The total payout is certainly going to be larger than $60M. Here's just one recent case:

Still waiting for:

* Joint Student / Faculty / Administration apology for this whole mess
* Student fund raising drive to promote child abuse awareness
* Football team to wear blue ribbon on uniform in remembrance of victims

Probably will get instead:

* Joint Student / Faculty / Administration statement of outrage and mass reconfirmation of cult membership
* Student fund raising drive to help offset $60M fine
* Football team to wear black arm band in remembrance of JOEPAAAAAAAAA

Penn State's students actually have the world's largest student-run philanthropy in the world - THON - which raises money for pediatric cancer patients. While I can't see them changing the target wholesale when they've got an existing relationship, it wouldn't surprise me if next year's THON (having the time to set the stuff up this time) has a portion of the proceeds go to help child abuse victims.

I may be wrong, but most states have a cap on the amount they can be sued for. They will argue PSU is an entity of the state and use that cap. VT did it for the suits related to the massacre.

No they won't, because that will mean that the student body will have to acknowledge that Saint Jopa wasn't the second coming that they all seem to think he was, and, if the idiots who camped out to protect the statue are even remotely representative of the student body, they won't be willing to do that.

Well there were cases of Sandusky taking a boy along on trips to bowl games, I'm wondering if the interstate nature of the offense, if there was an offense, may have on any limitations on damages.
