"It's not very friendly or encouraging at this stage," former Australian sprinter Cathy Freeman told the Herald Sun "I think it's very un-Australian, to be quite frank."

I'm amused that the term un-Australian means not friendly and encouraging. When people call me un-American, that's not usually what they mean.

How would they even know what a healthy and in-shape woman looks like? They seem to get it wrong in the media almost all of the time anyway.

She does seem kind of chunky in the picture.

"But, admittedly, she doesn't look like the same girl she used to when wearing a form-fitting swimsuit."

Agreed. I demand she remove the swimsuit immediately.

Doesn't matter as long as she can go fast. Male swimmers have a tougher time being both fat and fast, but women swimmers can sometimes have a few extra pounds without slowing down at all. I've known female swimmers who get slower after they LOSE weight.

Anyway, that's my $.02 as a former competitive swimmer and coach.

Fatty Magoo? That's a funny name. I would have called her a chazwazzer.

Doesn't fat float, so that puts her higher in the water or something? Fat cheater.

isn't a little fat good as far as buoyancy goes?

my nw years resoluytion this year of my 40th Bday was to get back into swimming like i did in my 20s. In January i started with 500m training sessions and added a couple laps every couple days. now I'm swimming 1850m 5 days a week. I keep waiting for my belly to disappear but it's not going anywhere. If an Olympic trained swimmer has extra pounds then maybe swimming isn't the best for losing weight. I do feel a lot better overall though.

First off, fat swimmers prefer the term "manatees".

/still call them sea cows

I've found swimming gets your heart in great condition, but the body doesn't follow as quickly. For some reason running always cut away the stomach fat much better.

The super sad truth... every study ever conducted shows that the overwhelming majority of people are unable to sustain more than 8-10% weight loss in the long term.

Exercise and eat properly because that will keep you healthy, not because that will keep you thin.

I swam for 9 years, and while I was never as fast as people who make it to the Olympics, I was pretty in shape. I could bench well over my body weight, I could squat at least double, I could do push-ups and sit-ups until the cows came home, I could run at about a 7 minute mile pace for 4 or 5 miles at a time...yet despite all of that, I STILL had a chunk of fat on my belly that I couldn't get rid of. Some people just aren't genetically built to get rid of every ounce of body fat.

I've lost a lot more weight by eating better, even though my workout routine hasn't changed too much. I cut out almost all processed foods, I've lost 20lbs relatively quick. I wasn't obese (6'1", 210lbs.), just not in great shape. Don't underestimate the diet. If you're not eating right, you can workout til the cows come home and it won't make a huge difference. People tend to eat a ton more than they think they are. Keep a food journal.

/I tried the paleo diet. It's a challenge, but it works insanely well. Don't let the word "diet" fool you, it's more a lifestyle change. You won't be counting calories.

New Order's "Temptation" came up on my Pandora when I started skimming this thread, and looking at her picture to the backdrop of that song adds a weird, intense level of depth.
