It's working for me at the moment. I use it to chat with my wife while I'm working and not have pesky texting charges or pay for unlimited texts.

2012-07-26 10:20:22 AM
Actually, most of the software professionals I know use this. Its amazing if you work from home or remotely, you can have a single number that rings all your devices at zero cost. Its fantastic.

AND I don't have to give clients my cell number, it screens calls.... its probably the best thing on my phone.

2012-07-26 10:21:22 AM
All your devices? How many cell phones are you carrying?

It's working right now for me too. ut earlier this morning it was connecting then immediately disconnecting. I wasn't sure if it was Google or the Messages app I use.

Hey, I use it on my tablet, Skype has some weird aspect ratio problem on the video that they never get around to fixing. So I must the the third user.

Goolge Talk != Google Voice. They are integrated, but different services.

Amazing how that works, I can talk to all my other Android owning and/or Gmail using friends/family without extra charges either...

Maybe subby confused it with Google+...

Everyone I speak to on a regular basis uses it, and is effected. So. There's anecdote in your eye.

most everyone I talk to online, including for business, uses it and skype, so...yeah. subby wants his ICQ back.

Since we seem to have a breakdown on Fark of what service the article is actually referring to, here are some handy pictures.

Google Talk:
www.google.com

Google Voice:
news.cnet.com

The first picture is what is/was down. It's an IM service. The two services are integrated into the overall Google services, but still distinctly different.

2012-07-26 10:36:44 AM
Yeah, for IM it's great. I don't have to sneak Skype onto my work computer.

I think subby was actually confusing it with Google+, which makes the joke valid. But since everyone I know uses Google Talk (Or GChat, which is the same thing) including my company, a lot of people are affected.

/subby's a moron.

Subby's headline was certainly confusing (and got the wrong service in on the joke), but the comments all went on to talking about Google Voice. That is what I wanted to address specifically.

Subby is - as others said - either confusing it with G+ or is an idiot. I use the chat feature all the time, as do a lot of people in the business world. It's been a PITA this morning.

A service I don't pay for is broken! This is an outrage!!!

same here - it's the only one I use and i use it every day. so here's what will happen - I'll do without it for a little while and it will be fine and then it will get fixed and I will keep using it.

2012-07-26 10:51:00 AM
We all use it at work. We've been confused all morning thinking it was internal.

liverpoolumd: Actually, most of the software professionals I know use this. Its amazing if you work from home or remotely, you can have a single number that rings all your devices at zero cost. Its fantastic.

Talk, not Voice. I use both.

2012-07-26 10:52:30 AM
me thinks subby is confusing google talk with google +... I know tons of people that use gTalk. I dont know anyone anymore that uses google + lolz.

Is Google Talk the same as GMail chat? If so count me in as another person that uses this all the time.

Many companies pay Google for email hosting services. Ends up being cheaper and easier than trying to manage your own mail server, as well as internal communications system like Office Communicator. My company does, as did my old University for the last year I was there.

I use gtalk pretty much exclusively, at least when it comes to online messaging.

2012-07-26 11:08:04 AM
Our whole company uses it, both internally on PCs and through the phones.

One thing I do admire about Google: they're willing to just throw all kinds of sh*t at the wall just to see what sticks. Some stuff works out, some doesn't. And what doesn't often gets picked over/absorbed by what does. I love the approach.

Google Voice is awsome.

Ditched my cellphone carrier, installed Cyanogen on my phone and downloaded GrooveIP to use with Google Voice.

I have a phone number and full phone service whenever I'm connected to wifi (home or work). The downside is you can't be contacted when you're out and about, away from a wireless connection - but the upside is my cellphone bill is now $0 a month.

I have about 50 Google Talk contacts. MSN? Three. Skype? Two. I was under the impression that GTalk was the most used IM client these days.

Count me as one of the "Gtalk replaced texting for me" people.

I started using it when I worked at a large regional theatre. It was the method the staff used to silently communicate with people in rehearsals. I've continued to use it as my default IM system, since most people seem to have a Google account.

I've got the exact opposite, which is further helped by the fact that Messenger also hooks info Facebook chat

I use Talk quite a bit to keep in touch with my girl. It's more direct than texting, and doesn't have character limits, being an IM app.

And it's cross-platform, which is handy.

But that said, it was working for me today, so I don't know what the hell is going on with this thread.
