Are they talking about House? Or Carter? Or some other doctor on a TV show that I only really know from Fark images saying things like "It's not Lupus"? Am I going to have to click on the link to figure out what doctor they're talking about?

"new"?

2012-07-26 09:22:53 AM

I was an American Whovian before it was ever even CLOSE to cool. Only nerds watched Doctor Who when I was younger.

Yes. I was a nerd. F*ck you.

Coincidentally, I read that Matt Smith actually played baseball as a kid. Yes. Really. In England. Anyway, his position was on first base.

As a person who has constantly been around vocal Whovians, this isn't a bad thing. It could help new viewers get into the show without the conversation starting with "OMG YOU HAVEN'T SEEN DOCTOR WHO!? WE MUST CORRECT THIS NOW. NO, NOW. SIT DOWN AND WATCH HETHEN."

/got that a lot before i watched it myself and found out i liked it.

I'm a recent Who fan but not because I thought it was new or anything. I tried to watch the Tom Baker years and thought it was just stupid. Fast-forward about 25 years and I'm watching Torchwood when my husband tells me it's a spinoff from the new Doctor Who. Okay, now I'm interested. 3 years later, I'm completely hooked and caught up on all the new seasons.

But, I think what's really driving the show's popularity here more than the publicity is access. In the 70s/80s, you could only catch Doctor Who on PBS. Now we've got BBC America & DVR's, making it MUCH easier to watch. Also, Alex Kingston was an extremely popular actress on ER, so she could be drawing in a large part of the numbers.

You have to understand. It took Entertainment Weekly so long to get to this story because they had to release 42 Twilight covers first. And they're not even done talking about the franchise yet, so be thankful they took time out of their endless Twilight nob sobbing to even acknowledge that people like something other than Twilight. GOSH.

My wife and I have been watching the new series for a few years, she's only seen Matt Smith.

Just recently got me 9-yo daughter starting from "Rose". She loves it so far - even made a comment that the special effects were neat.

Wait till I show her something from the 70s or 80s.

Either that is intentional, or a brilliant typo.

It's good to see American entertainment media shine a spotlight on something foreign (that isn't Oscar-bait).

Back in college in the 1980s I got to interview Bonnie Langford, Lalla Ward and Louise Jameson for
my college radio station when they were in town for a convention. And my brother got to hang out
with Matthew Waterhouse in the hotel bar (he picked up the tab) and take him shopping for comics in
the dealers room at another con (Mr. Waterhouse is, apparently, a big fan of Harlan Ellison).

You can only DREAM of being that nerdy, you young whipper snapper.

I'm really glad that I was talked into watching the new series and have gone back to watch all the old ones that are available on netflix. Doctor Who has really become an obsession of mine. I was lucky in a used book store when I found almost the entire run of the 10th doctor's books as well as some others.

I probably would have become a Dr. Who fan if (born in 1977) I had seen more than a few one off episodes on PBS and various novels dumped in the sci-fi section of used bookstores. Somehow it never clicked to get more interested based on that. Or that era's Dr. Who. The new stuff looks interesting, may have to finally give in. At least it isn't like picking up on an anime series like Gundam or Dragon Ball Z with years of convoluted continuity or inability to tell what series' "count" or where to start in general.

Maybe. I remember the all day pledge drives. It'd be Dr. Who all day... followed by the same Grateful Dead concert every time.

The Misfits doesn't get enough attention. Liked series one, seemed better than Heroes.

Oh, I loved me some Monty Python, Fawlty Towers. Just somehow I never quite got the right exposure to Dr. Who. But that theme song is stuck in my head.
