In the 1990's I spent thousands of dollars on chess books and for what - a mere 300 point improvement in my game. At least most of my friends who play THAT game know enough not to play me... or I them. But minimally I have an addictive "skill" to show for it.

But any-who, I am here to say that Zynga is the expense without the benefit. That is any idiot can play Zynga's clicking game and spend just as much money as I did without having any skill other than what Zynga says you have. Of course Zynga is insatiable for money and will treat their "players" as such.

Stocks are funny things.

My company before today: "We plan on $1.55 billion in revenue in 2012."
Marketplace: "LOL your stock sucks. Trade it at a 2-year low!"
My company today: "OK, we took a closer look at projections, and it looks like we're on track to get only $1.4 billion in 2012."
Marketplace today: "zOMG buy buy buy +6%!!!"

12% of Facebooks revenue comes from these guys. Facebooks Q2 earnings report is out today.

Should be interesting.

Agreefinity.

Used to enjoy a game of Draw Some with family overseas; since Zynga got hold of it, it's turned to utter shiat. No longer alerts me when somebody takes their turn, plays the answer from a previous turn when showing the most recent turn and then locks up so you have to delete your game and start from scratch. Problems been reported a million times and they can't even be bothered to answer, let alone fix it. And of course, since they bought all the words have been changed from crappy ones to try and force you to spend money buying decent ones.

Fark Zynga so hard they shatter.

Stock analyst here. That actually happens more often than you think. Bottom line, the street thought the original revenue projections were unrealistic and sold out of the stock before a disappointing earnings report (which would have made the stock react negatively anyway). Now expectations are reset and perhaps leave a little room for the company to make more revenue than they suggested.

Zynga, like the games it makes...is a flash in the pan

Know any bored housewives still playing farmville or angry bird?
when was the last time you popped on words with friends or draw something?

So hows that again? Consoles are dying, mobile is the future?

If only it was just Zynga. Google Play is covered in "pay to win" apps, and although I've never seen iTunes, I can't imagine it being any different.

The "pay to win" business model needs to die, period. Sell the game outright, make it free with ads, or fuq off and die.

A lovely sentiment and all-really, it couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of anthropomorphized ass-cancers-but the damage is done. The momentary success of their "business model" of creating games but charging for playability has spread to a lot of other big-name manufacturers of so-called "games." And degraded the whole notion of "games" for everyone else.

I miss Electronic Arts. And I mean the original, artistically inspired Electronic Arts, not the digital sweatshop that it's become.

I used to like me the Draw Something.

Until they got a hold of it and now every turn is interrupted by a minimum of 4 ads.

Fark that.

Zynga is evil.

What they did to the their employees in regards to the stock options was totally evil.

I've been playing their free version of Words with Friends and I haven't had problems. I'd prefer less ads but I'd prefer that in any aspect of my life. Never paid for any of their games or paid for anything in-game, so I can't speak about pay to win or other aspects of the games.

Zynga didn't make angry birds. If it did only 2 birds would be available for free and you would only have 10 shots before having to pay money or wait 10 minutes for another shot. Birds would also come dressed in different clothes and would be available for more money.

The Veruca Salt's of the current gaming generation have utterly destroyed gaming. The Zyngas of the world are simply reacting to this instant gratification need. It sucks that most of the gaming models now are pay2win. Hell... Blizzard utterly screwed up Diablo 3 in a hope to cash in on the "I wan't it now!!!" gamers who are so quick to swipe a CC then actually *gasp* play a farking game.

I don't know why facebook doesn't just charge a dollar a year or even, gasp, a dollar a month or whatever the minimum local currency is. A peso a year, a donar a year, a pound a year or per month per user. I would pay that much because it's not breaking me and it's an easy way to contact people.

Oh, and Drew, you still suck.

Anything related Zynga gets deleted promptly from my phone. Sorry Words with Friends retards, it was called Scrabble before it was stolen and filled with ads. Sorry Draw Something people who kept nudging me, I'm not drawing a picture of "ISLAND" again for the 400th time for 2 coins that I can spend on... nothing.

I can't help but think this whole "social" crap is another "bubble" waiting to pop. Like others have commented; consoles are not dead. I still spend time playing Skyrim even though I've finished the main quest. I don't play those stupid social games, and mobile games are fun for an hour then lose their novelty.
I'm not by any means a financial analyst, but I'm savvy enough to know this can't sustain itself.

Honestly I don't mind Zynga's business model so much only because I grew up in an era where we would spend inordinate sums of money on Arcade games that were inherently designed the cheat the player and get more money out of them in order to progress. Granted, the Arcade games of my youth are infinitely better than the crap Zynga puts out, but I don't see the business model being a whole lot different. Yestedays 25 cent game of Pac-Man is today's 99 Cent iPhone app.

My personal shame- my mother guilted me into playing Words with Friends with her. I can't see how it's legally distinct enough from Scrabble. Bunch of hacks.

I have a relative who works for Zynga. I hope the company starts making original games that aren't transparent cash grabs. Otherwise, burn baby burn.

Actually it's more like:
Some wall street drone with no actual facts or insight into the company: "We expect $1.55 billion in revenue in 2012"
Marketplace: "buy buy buy! pump it up!"
Company: "We made $1.4 billion" or "We made $2.8 billion". (It really doesn't matter)
Market : "Sell sell sell panic!" Stock down 15% in overnight trading
Real players: "heh, thanks for the short. suckers"
2 weeks later
Market: "We're going to buy the stocks back we sold at a loss".
Real players: "Thanks for the money. again"

Also, while Charadium is OK, every other Pictionary clone out there has a chat room full of shiatfarkcockyourmama teenagers. if everyone didn't live so far apart, I'd much rather pull out the actual Pictionary box again, old school as it seems.

I played Mafia Wars a few years ago. Played it for months, maybe even longer. Then someone on a message board asked me what it was, and I described it. After reading back what I just wrote, I went to facebook and deleted the app.

You click a button to get money to buy something(s) that allow you the option of clicking another button.

True epic mobile games exist, as well as many highly polished versions of what are considered pretty hardcore, like Touhou games, and more are coming out every month. You just have to reset your price expectations, because they usually start at $10 and go up from there, which is a culture shock on mobile.

I wish EA would sell something that a. ever gets a single update and b. was more like the simpler console games without a lot of touchscreen and IAP crap. I'd be happy as a clam if I could just get SimCity on iAnything, probably wouldn't emerge for a month, but theirs is horribly broken and completely abandoned.
