Probably misread it as UFL.

They're not. Now shut up.

Wouldn't be the first time that the LA Kings social media manager has stuck his foot in his mouth, and it sadly won't be the last.

Why would Jones care? He can visit the Cup tomorrow here in Ithaca, where he trains and the Kings' captain is from.

with the UFC coming to town for UFC on FOX on Aug. 4 at the Kings' home building, the Staples Center, the company extended an invite to the Stanley Cup champs, only to be met with this response from the Kings' official Twitter account: "Sorry, the Cup is only for those who play a real sport."

I don't get what's happening here. I read it like there's a UFC event in the Staples Center, the UFC invited some hockey people, and the hockey people started talking about how the Stanley Cup is for hockey people only. I don't get the connection between tickets to a UFC event and the Stanley Cup. Did the UFC ask for the cup to be on display or something?

I am a hockey fan (Bruins, having grown up in Mass).. but .. ahh NHL.. yeah, the UFC is whooping your ass in terms of excitement and viewership.
I live in Colorado (decent hockey state).. and for mid-level UFC events without a title on the line.. the sports bars are far more packed for UFC than for the cup or NHL playoff games.

Everywhere I go I hear more UFC talk than NHL talk.

ps: Jon Jones retweeted me recently :) --small victories.. but he did!

Wait, so people pack bars for one-off events but not for the NHL playoffs, which are on literally every night for almost 3 months? The hell you say.

I sure hope Vancouver gets another NBA team if that will help them not dwell on an insignificant tweet that happened several months ago.

Because you don't need to dodge paying $65 for each NHL game like you do for each UFC event.

Well, it could be the fact that you can watch hockey at home for free, but have to pay $60 to watch a UFC fight at home.

I love NHL hockey and UFC almost equally. When I lived in LA I went to Kings games all the time. I'm going to UFC 150 in Denver because my best friend is Ben's strike coach. But if I had to hedge a bet on who would win between the best enforcers in the NHL and the belt holders in the UFC, I'd go with every single guy in the UFC in about 10 seconds of the first round. And for those of you who think they aren't athletes and that it's "NASCAR in a cage" - well, it's just retarded. The amount of training they go through for a fight is insane. The cardio involved in being able to finish a 3 round fight - let alone a 5 round fight - is among some of the most demanding in the world. The hockey world really doesn't have a winning argument there given that most of those guys can't skate more than 2 minutes without needing a shift change.

The LA Kings media putz is calling a sport that involves fighting a non-sport? The NHL, nah, its never had fighting. Guys like Bob Probert were popular because of their use of harsh language.

2012-07-26 01:31:55 PM
At first I was confused, but then I realized why the NHL and their fanboys hate UFC and MMA so much:

The NHL isn't a hockey league, it's a fighting league. People watch the games for the fights and the biggest fan reactions are to enforcers.

This is just a more pathetic version of MMA hate from boxing fans.

/Seriously, hockey fights are like cripple fights.

I call bullshiat, or at least an author trying to make a point by "bending the truth."

with the UFC coming to town for UFC on FOX on Aug. 4 at the Kings' home building, the Staples Center, the company extended an invite to the Stanley Cup champs, only to be met with this response from the Kings' official Twitter account: "Sorry, the Cup is only for those who play a real sport."

The article describes, but does not quote, what the invitation was. The Kings response only makes sense if what the UFC actually asked was for the Cup to show up, not simply an invite to the players.

If they merely "extended an invite to the Stanley Cup champs," why would the Kings discuss the trophy?

assets.sbnation.com

Case in point. Where do they invite the champs to attend?

"a VIP ticket" - singular. They just invited the trophy, not the players.

What would that accomplish? The players, via fighting, enforce their own code of conduct. Most fights have a purpose.

I was just thinking the same thing. If the NBA, NHL, MLB had 1 one-off game playoffs they would easily triple (if not more) UFC ratings. The comment about the cup was also confusing, unless they wanted the Kings to bring and show off the cup at the event.

professorkowalski: What would that accomplish? The players, via fighting, enforce their own code of conduct. Most fights have a purpose.

It's unnecessary. If it were the Olympics would be completely untenable, and we know that's not true at all. It poisons the game, because the players know that they can't rely on the referees to keep play clean, and they have to worry about fighting and sending "messages" to keeping dirty play in check instead of just focusing on hockey, not to mention the physical toll fighting extracts on the enforcers.

Hockey fans in established hockey markets don't go for the fights, they go to support their team and watch the game they love.

Would they like to see a fight? Sure, especially against a hated rival, but a Pittsbugh/Philly game or a Rangers/Devils game or a Leafs/Habs or a Flames/Oilers game with no fights will draw just as many fans as one with a line-brawl.

Why?

Because the game comes first, not the fights.

Now it is a bit of an interesting point you raise and it's a complaint I've long had about Bettman. For all of Bettman's whining and moaning about fighting being out of hand and line-brawls making the game look bad, he does absolutely nothing about it. He could change the rule on fighting the second he wants to, but he doesn't and I don't think he ever will.

I'm talking fan base here. The average dude who follows the sport sees it as one guy kicking the crap out of the other guy. As the night progresses, average dude drinks a bunch of Bud Light, eats some over priced wings and later puffs out his chest because he knows what an anaconda body lock looks like. I'm guessing average dude hasn't spent hours at open mat, but he talks loudly like he has and has an even louder shirt that yells, "I'm a d-bag."

9 years of wrestling was enough mat time for me and my knees, but I respect those who are focused enough to stick with whichever discipline they choose.

Well, yeah, that's why I watch hockey: for the actual game of hockey. I don't like the fighting, because as I said I think it gets in the way, and isn't even very good fighting (not being able to plant your feet properly will do that). But whenever an NHL game comes on in the company of someone who doesn't actually watch it much, they're like "oh sweet, I love hockey cause it has fights!" That's probably why fighting's still allowed.
