I had the interesting experience of seeing Heart during their mid-80s commercial peak, then in the mid-90s at a state fair gig. The 80's gig was dreadful and lifeless, but they seemed much more relaxed and even joyful at the later gig, having stripped themselves of all the 80's musical, sartorial and chemical excess.

I'm currently reading "I Want My MTV", a fairly entertaining oral history of the birth and evolution of the channel. I just finished the chapter entitled "Gacked to the Tits" (a phrase uttered by Jeff Lukather of Toto), which included these two quotes:

Nancy: Jeff Stein was a really fun director to work with. He probably was not on cocaine, unlike everybody else at the time. Including us.

Ann: Of course, including us. Otherwise we never would have done some of those videos. In the '80s, we drank a lot of champagne, we did a lot of blow, and made a bunch of videos.

I want to know why they sold out to Swiffer and became the band behind Pervert Broom.

I saw them in the late 70's and they had a hell of a show. (Bob Welsh opened)

She didn't have any quotes about the fat sister. I've been reading articles about Heart since the 70's, and everything after 1986 has to include a quote about the fat sister. It's a rule or something.

Although it's nice to see them working again. I'm guessing it's because Nancy divorced Cameron Crowe and she has time to work.

Yeah, I watched that movie a few too many times back in the day. I still think its cool that an average looking rock writer married one of the hottest chicks ever in a rock band. They're still married, too. Good for them.

You're right. That sucks. She probably divorced him because he hasn't made a good movie in a while. Money grubbing biatch hasn't done anything lately, either.

Anyone else notice that the song "All I wanna do is make love to you" is about nothing more than a woman who sleeps around with guys just to get herself pregnant and then deny visitation?

I never did understand why it took so long for them to have a single with Nancy singing.

I'm almost purely conjecturing here, but I think Nancy might be a bit shy (relatively speaking, for a rock star). More of a "guitar George" type.

On an unrelated note: she looks amazing for her age. Seriously.

Seriously. She's aged amazingly well, and is just as good as ever on the guitar.

Few bands have been able to survive as long or as successfully as Heart. Credit for much of that goes to the band's ability to rise and fall with the sounds of the time.

haha, yeah, I remember that one song they wrote that wasn't ridiculous and overblown with big dick, arena dinosaur guitar histrionics that didn't sound like every other song on the album. Can't wait for their fourth wave ska album.

Curious fact: they're the only band in the world I haven't seen live.

Ann's 2007 CD Hope & Glory was pretty good. Naturally, because she's fat, no one really noticed. I went through puberty with Dreamboat Annie, Little Queen and Dog & Butterfly. Saw them in '77 and they were amazing

My first concert was Day On the Green at the Oakland Coliseum. I was 13 and only got to go because my big sister wanted to go and mom made her take me. Loverboy, Pat Travers, Ozzy Osbourne, Blue Oyster Cult, and Heart. I remember it being hot as hell, and crowded shoulder to shoulder. When Ann started singing "Mistral Wind" I swear a cool breeze blew over the crowd. Nancy is a kick ass guitarist and Ann has about the purest, strongest rock voice on a woman I can think of. I haven't had a chance to see them since. I'd like for them to come to town and play a smaller (300 seat or so) venue - I'd be there with bells on.

Saw them summer '78 (The Outlaws opened) and again in '93 (Cheap Trick was the opener). They were great both times.

The video was pretty much that - except that it showed only one guy. Not sure what message they were trying to send except that 'we're doing it to fill the album and for the ca$h'. BTW - I would totally let Nancy Wilson do that to me.

Def Leppard, on the other hand...

The album on which the "what about love?" refrain can be found was singularly responsible for my written withdrawal from the Columbia House record club.

I saw them with The Outlaws back in '78 on the Little Queen tour. It was probably my second or third concert. They opened with the title cut; a couple of mandolins around a campfire (onstage) and it just roared to life when the rest of the band kicked in.

I also happened to be staying in the same hotel as them when they played in Worcester around '88. I hung around the lobbey late after the show hoping to catch something interesting. I saw several band members return, but the ladies stayed in the limo and I never saw them enter the building. I thought it was kind funny that the bass player walked into the elevator with a pack of oreos and a quart of milk..........................

When I hear Heart, I get that same feeling of filthy discomfort that I get when I hear that Peter Frampton song. That feeling that I should be in a trailer park working on an '82 Mustang.

The closest I've seen to a modern Heart is Halestorm, because Lzzy Hale sings like Ann, and looks and plays like Nancy. They also cover Heart a lot.

I'm thinking that Nancy and Ann have some sort of mystical connection wherein Nancy is siphoning off
Ann's life force, leaving just enough for her to continue singing.

It would explain Ann's persistent health issues over the years.

2012-07-26 11:55:36 AM
Yeah, Nancy is pretty and talented, but Ann possesses quite possibly the best female voice in rock, ever. When I hear a Heart song on the radio, it's Ann that I'm mostly listening to.

Putting a higher priority on a musician's looks than their talent is why the vast majority of the music on the charts is shiat. All image and no substance. This is why we can't have nice things. Don't get me wrong... I like looking at pretty ladies. But I don't need my musicians to be sexy, just like I don't need my porn stars to sing to me while they're getting rogered.

and Peaceboy:

"Gacked to the Tits" is my new favorite phrase.
