I tuned into this game and was confused when I saw it labeled as "XXX Summer Olympics" on the guide. Am I the only one?

"The statement, however, included another gaffe: It failed to refer to the countries by their official Olympic names, causing organizers to reissue the statement using "Republic of Korea" and "Democratic People's Republic of Korea.""

Does the U.K. not have access to Google or Wikipedia? I can't wait to hear the national anthem music they'll use for Kazakhstan.

I bet it was Americans in charge because we're ignorant of everything, and the English are soooo superior to us.

It is an unfortunate thing about the Roman numeral system. Trust me, I know.

ABC's website never works for me, no idea why. I'm thinking it's either Chrome or AdBlock.

Thanks. I hate abc.com anyway, so I looked it up on another website. AdBlock works fine in Firefox with that website though.

It's gotta be a pain in the ass to keep track of all the PC and Geo-political bullshiat while setting up an Olympics.

Yes, but this one was an error that easily could've been avoided. Something different like an Iranian facing an Israeli in a sport is just something they hope doesn't happen (though Iran has supposedly said they won't forfeit such matches this year like they have in the past).

But this... this was either a guy intentionally being a dick or someone just not paying attention. Either way, I don't blame the North Koreans (who are still technically at war with the South, FWIW) for protesting like that. It's annoying to those who brought tickets, but as you said; it's geo-political BS. It's just BS that's pretty damn important to those people.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure Canada would be pissed if the American Flag and Anthem was played for their team.

Or Sudan and South Sudan (does south Sudan have a flag yet?)
Or North and South Carolina

wrong anthems have been played before. I think I remember a clip where they started playing the wrong anthem, stopped when they realized the mistake, but when they couldn't locate the correct one, the olympian just sang it out with the crowd and all was well.

give me a break. the olympics are supposed to be a time when whatever is going on with geopolitical bullshiat goes out the window, and people just compete as human beings. leave that crap for the generals and presidents to argue about. you're there to play soccer in a wonderful environment where a shared sense of humanity and joy is supposed to be important. good job ruining that.

/yeah, yeah, I know the olympics have never achieved that ideal, but it's still nice to hope and change and all that.

1992 World Series between Atlanta and Toronto.....one of the games in Atlanta they carried in the Canadian flag upside down. Canadians not happy about that

This is a bit deeper than that. North Korea:

A) is -severely- nationalist
B) is technically still at war with the country whose flag was displayed
c) would probably punish the athletes one way or another (but likely harshly) if they took that insult lying down

What's the big whoop? They're all gonna be South Koreans sooner than later.

This comes just a few weeks after playing the wrong anthem at some event with South Africa (I forget what). They played the apartheid era anthem by mistake.

With the flags it's not such a big deal, it is farking embarrassing though.

RGA184 - are you talking about the boxing? I remember once they didn't have the tape when an Irish boxer won so his trainer just stood up and sang.

At least with the Vancouver Olympics, you had the excuse that most of the organizers were high as kites...

It was in Scotland - Glasgow to be precise. I wouldn't rule out the Silly Buggers having a Laff hypothesis either

They did say that, yes. Of course, this year there was only one sport (judo) where Iran could've faced Israel... and their judoka (who has admitted to throwing matches rather than face off against Israeli opponents) just coincidentally withdrew due to illness.

Call me callous, but I have a VERY hard time taking the official name of any country seriously.

(Do Swiss people get bent out of shape when they read "Switzerland" instead of "Confoederatio Helvetica" in English?...really?!?)

I care even less when the first three words of your country's official name are BLATANT. FARKING. LIES!
