The ironic thing is that Walter Cronkite knew the frequency, because he was a ham radio operator.

Shortened AMV version of same song (if you don't know what an "AMV" is then don't worry about clicking this one)

Having read TFA....

What a bunch of stupid farking questions. Why not ask him "boxers of briefs"?

Or better yet, ask him "why couldn't you have admitted that those right-wing bloggers had a point about the Killian documents instead of whining about 'conservative attack dogs' and stonewalling for two weeks and therefore drawing attention away from Dubya's TANG records and putting yourself in the spotlight?"

So, it's OK for a news company to make up evidence of some guy's wrongdoing...as long as the guy is a douche?

You're an idiot. Like Bush or not, it is NOT OK to make shiat up (or take what you KNOW is made up shiat) and put it on the news.

Man, if there was such a thing as "the Internet" back then, we would have learned that Cronkite was the same as Rather. The original lefty "news" reporter.

A lot of military personnel perished because of Cronkite and his soft support for the enemy. Say what you want about Vietnam, whether we should be there or not.....but his "reporting" gave Aid and Comfort.

Because it was always about putting himself in the spotlight Rather just did not want it to be in the manner it happened. Instead of just reporting a story he was about being part of the story. He was more celebrity than journalist/reporter. Just a slightly classier version of Geraldo Rivera. The only thing missing was Rather staging somebody shooting at him.

OK, let us assume Karl Rove is the ultimate source for the fake memo*. Dan Rather and his team accepted them pretty much at face value because they fit with how they saw President Bush, and they saw a chance to get a scoop and change the election. Because their own ideological biases blinded them to the almost certain probability that the documents were poorly executed fakes, they ran the story with very minimal checking.

In other words, the source of the documents themselves is irrelevant to whether or not Rather was biased against Republicans, and the Bush family in particular. A mouse that doesn't like cheese isn't going to get caught in a trap baited with cheddar.

*The actual source, Bill Burkett was a "known anti-Bush zealot", even to Rather's producer.

Yup and the Iraq war was about oil and re-instituting the draft, Gore really won Florida because of butterfly ballots, the stimulus spending was about shovel ready jobs and rebuilding infrastructure, Obama's birth certificate is a forgery, there are no lobbyist working in the Obama administration which is the most transparent in history and he will never ever use indefinite detention law he signed. Plus the Easter Bunny and tooth fairy are real. Oh and Obamacare was about making sure everybody could get affordable health care.

Now could I interest you in this bridge?

While I wouldn't put it past Karl Rove to pull a stunt like that, ultimately it was Dan Rather who chose to run with the story without properly vetting it, and then stonewalling for two weeks after legitimate questions were raised about its authenticity.

hasty ambush: Because it was always about putting himself in the spotlight Rather just did not want it to be in the manner it happened. Instead of just reporting a story he was about being part of the story. He was more celebrity than journalist/reporter. Just a slightly classier version of Geraldo Rivera. The only thing missing was Rather staging somebody shooting at him.

I always knew Rather's hubris would be his downfall. All he had to do was at the very next broadcast say, "questions have been raised about the authenticy of the Killian memos. We here at CBS News pride ourselves for accuracy above all else. We are retracting the story until futher review" or something along those lines, and it would have been yesterday's news. But his ego would not let him do that. Especially not since it was, in his words, the "conservative attack dogs" challenging the documents. As with all narcissists, Rather could not to admit to himself, let alone others, that he could have possibly been wrong.

/usually think the whining about the "liberal lame-stream media" is pathetic
//but Rather's bias was so blatant, it was a farking joke
///however I can see Dan Rather's narcissism convincing himself that he was fair and balanced

I have to say I'm a big fan of Rather, but that his acceptance of those documents at face value is one
of the most shameful things a journalist has ever done, and he deserved to lose his job over it.
