I, for one, am happy that Dr. Ride made the announcement at all...even if it was in her obituary.

Good for her (and, hugs for Tam).

One day soon, it will be possible for anyone (except, perhaps, people deeply involved in religion) to be themselves without fear of career suicide. And, after a while, the same will be true for people in religious occupations as well.

I feel it makes more of an impact now when everyone is focused on mourning the loss of a tremendous woman that gave so much to society.

She had a male husband, and then a female partner. She didnt care about labels, so she didnt care if her 2nd partner was called "wife" or "partner"

She sounds like the kind of person who would tell all the militant same-gender "marriage" activists to get over it.

They would actually be surprised if she weren't gay, as real woman git married, pop out elventy billion kids and keep their mouths shut instead of flying around on a spaceship.

"Most people did not know that Sally had a wonderfully loving relationship with Tam O'Shaughnessy for 27 years. Sally never hid her relationship with Tam. They were partners, business partners in Sally Ride Science, they wrote books together, and Sally's very close friends, of course, knew of their love for each other. We consider Tam a member of our family.

This says it all. Tam and Sally lived and loved together and that was that. Sally never felt any need to declare herself "out" when she was already out to anyone she cared about.

Is it just me, or do astronauts seem to be very private people, on average? Buzz Aldrin is the only one I can think of that seems to enjoy the lime light.

Since her widow will supposedly not be receiving the survivor benefits that married hetero couples would be eligible to receive, challenge accepted.

I think all this talk of her homosexuality is taking away from who she was and what she accomplished

Her and her sister seem to be exceptional people and I'm kind of sad that there aren't going to be any kids to which their traits can be passed

Well stated!

Some idiot came into my shop about 10 years ago (he was an architectural intern at a local office) he stated the needed to talk to everyone, about 5 folks at the time. I assumed he was going to read the riot act after I farked up a simple job. This idiot proceeded to state he was coming out of the closet. Charming young lady that was my main person laughed and walked away. her comment under breath was something along the lines of "no shiat" and went back to work.

Dr.Ride is an inspiration to EVERYONE..

//It's 2012! no one cares. other than you went into space and were an inspiration to all, male and female. She did more than damn near any one I have EVER met.

Her sister, the "gay Presbyterian minister" alleges this. Someone who couldn't possibly have an agenda...

/Think about it.

Who the heck cares? Why do people feel the need to publicly declare their orientation or inquire into that of others? Get a life, worry about something that matters.

I'm not sure where you work but at my Company (employs 120,000), being gay is praised. You get you face on the cover of the newsletters and photo ops with the President.

I wish identity politics would crawl into a hole and die a painful death.
