Twitter is merely a rope, whether you just throw someone a line or make yourself a noose is your own doing.

While the comment wasn't funny, it also wasn't racist. Africans are from Africa. It is called the West Nile Virus and originated in Africa. The Nile is in Africa.

Again, not funny but not racist either.

It's broderline by itself, (though suggesting the only positive thing about having African immigrants in your country is that they are food for the mosquitos ain;t good no matter how you slice it) but added to her support for the local far-right party she loses the benfit of the doubt in my opinion

She also does not like the latvians:

Three Latvian are brag about sons. "My son is soldier. He have rape as many women as want," say first Latvian. "Zo?" second say, "My son is farmer. He have all potato he want!" Third Latvian wait long time, then say, "My son is die at birth. For him, struggle is over." "Wow! You are win us," say others. But all are feel sad.

Its on NBC Sports right now, and nbcolympics.com is probably streaming it. Team USA was down 2-0 before the 20th minute but they just scored right now and they're looking for the equalizer.

Well, if you can get dropped from your team for this, then I guess you are best to just have no communication with anyone of any sort.

Not racist. Just political bias from the Greek olympic authority.

It's just like if MSNBC were in control of the olympics in the USA, instead of Salt Lake City hosting the Olympics, Salt Lake City would have been burned to the ground and all the people trying to escape the city napalmed from helicopters.

As an Olympic athlete, you are representing your country to the world. Anything that offensive, whether you think it's racist or not, has no place, and they're well within their right to kick her off the team.

IIRC wasn't a woman from the US olympic team going to Munich (36 not 72) kicked off the squad because she drank Champagne on the cruise ship that was taking her to the games?

Your added string of words don't change how ridiculous this is.

The lesson: Never say things that might offend others. This crime trumps all other facts.

Only watching the olympics for some track and field (used to do that) and soccer. Cause it's nice to see a soccer competition where the US is a powerhouse for a change.

Once more, as an Olympic athlete, you are supposed to be an ambassador of your nation. It's as much about image as is is about competition. If Greece doesn't want to look to the world like a bunch of broke, racist xenophobes, fine on them.

2012-07-25 12:57:30 PM
She retweets posts from Golden Dawn, and supports that Jag-off Greek Politician that just hit a woman during debate and threw water at another. In the court of public opinion no real evidence, and at times no real corpus delecti is even needed. If a US athlete who was known to support, and retweet KKK thoughts, made some comment that ran along these lines, I'd be glad to see her gone as well. You know, sometimes you want to hang around chickens, don't be shocked when you're covered in shiat because of the relationship.

So if an American athlete retweeted posts from the KKK, and made a joke about the how the South was experiencing drought, but that's ok because of all the Africans there, you'd be ok with them being a representative of the USA in one of the world's most high profile events?

Even better, if you read her Wiki, it becomes clear that she was suspended for being drunk/a bad influence, apparently as retribution for having shot down the sexual advances of the current team leader (and future IOC President) Avery Brundage.

Her teammates apparently all but withdrew in protest, but really, I doubt it would've mattered much in that era (sadly).

At a point it doesn't have to be 'offensive' to cause her problems. Do you think Greece wants A) Olympians who STFU about issues other than 'Well I'm gonna do my best out there', who bring good publicity to their nation or B) Some numby that draws world attention to her by some offhand remark retweeted from a fringe group, that Greece can then enter into some long, defensive battle about why it was OK that the athlete said this and is within her rights.

My guess is A, but you know, there may be countries with citizens who think B is valid. Like people in the US.

I'm not going to argue this.. I've done so in way too many threads. Some people will find it offensive, others won't; it's the nature of things that are offensive. If something is offensive to -anyone-, then it is, by definition, offensive, even if it isn't offensive to -you-.

No, but if you do make offensive public statements, you might get fired for showing bad judgment and reflecting poorly on the organization you represent. Life is tough that way. Get a helmet.
