This suggests that the ability to decide when to have a kid varies depending largely on demographics.

It's something like 50% in the US.

Yeah, I have a friend who can't handle one kid, can't even handle his own life. Yet he has accidentally knocked up his wife 4 times now in the last 5 or 6 years. They can't even keep their own shiat together, and keep bringing children into a relationship filled with termoil (sp?). Luckily, he has money coming out the ass and can afford it.

On the other side of the fence. My wife and I have been trying to have kids for about 7 years now. We're in a loving relationship and are both wanting children very badly, yet can't seem to have any.

If there's a god - he's kind of a jerk in some ways.

And on the flip side, a full 63% of US births were planned. I'm willing to be that's much more than in decades past, particularly the pre-Pill decades.

I have three kids. My wife and I planned to have three kids. We planned, years in advance to have our first when we did. We planned to have our second about 3 months later than we actually did, and we planned to have our third at least a year or two later than we did.

So I wonder how that would be coded. #1 was planned like a shuttle launch, the others were more or less just forecast.

I've noticed an uptick in the number of unplanned births among my former students who are out of high school only one or two years. Their baby daddies are pretty bad choices. I wonder how much of this is teen rebellion and how much is "I want someone to love me."

All of six of my children have been "unplanned." I guess for the woman anyway. My plan was to be on the next flight by the time she woke up. So listen ladies: even if he tells you he's had a vasectomy doesn't mean you don't need to take precautions. You are the one responsible for taking care of the kid if you get pregnant, so don't go blaming everyone else when it happens.

The British are Europe's fattest people, aren't they? Indeed they are.

But yeah, Americans take the trans-fat-laden, factory-produced cake. By the half dozen at least.

So, comparing 1982 and 2010 the number stayed constant.

upload.wikimedia.org

That points to two high probability causes. Either there's a certain level of intelligence where you aren't bright enough to control your fertility (plus straight up accidents) or they picked two years that matched each other numerically.

Wanna bet they picked two years that matched numerically?

2012-07-25 12:40:10 PM
Don't they mean that 37% of pregnancies are unintended. Or is the number of unintended pregnancies actually higher than 37% and 37% of the unintended births those who do not elect to abort?

And why blame public health officials? How is this their fault? I read a disturbing study way back in 1990 in which college educated women ages 21 to 40, who had been taking oral contraceptives for at least six months, were given a standard questionnaire on the proper use of oral contraceptives. The results were that 69% of them women lacked such basic information that the effectiveness of the method in the group could be rated at no more than 74%. In other words, if 100 of these women were to continue to use the pill for a year, 26 of them would become pregnant. Now these were educated women, so you can imagine how badly some of the dimmer members of our society would fare, especially those who are using a birth control method that isn't a "bullet-proof" as the pill. So I think 37% isn't so shocking a number.

2012-07-25 12:41:01 PM
How you unintentionally give birth? You were just walking along, fell, and a baby popped out?

Maybe they mean 37% of pregnancies....

Actually, I think Australia has the "world's fattest" crown right now. Kangaroo meat & Fosters to blame, I suppose.

Intentional or non-intentional, half of all US births in 2011 were paid for under Medicaid.

Do you know how damned poor you have to be to qualify for Medicaid? It's a little less poor for pregnant women and kids, but still, gorram poor.

And that's half the kids in the country.

People that suggest that they are "not trying, not preventing" drive me insane. If you put P in Va-g without preventing, you're trying (whether you admit it or not).

2012-07-25 12:49:48 PM
I think it's more the pregnancies that are unintended, right? Aren't the births actually planned and expected by the time they happen?
